Exploring the Remains of Air Base Speedway: NASCAR's Ghost Track | S1ap on Location: Episode 1

With the mystery surrounding Air Base Speedway all but resolved, the only thing left to do was to jump in the car and drive out to the site of the track to see if there was anything left of the old speedway. I expected next to nothing but walked away with way more than I bargained for.
This concludes the Air Base Speedway Trilogy, and I want to thank all of my followers new and old for propelling this series to heights I never thought possible. I plan on doing more S1ap on Location-styled exploration vids for more abandoned tracks in the future. If you have an suggestions, let me know.

Update: Turns out those pop tops didn't come out until the 1960's so that setup with the party on the back stretch was likely some friends who were tearing up the track after it was abandoned. Also that "cooler" as someone pointed out is probably a radio-flyer wagon someone used to tote all the drinks around in.

Pop-a-tops didn't come out until the late sixties. You needed a church key to punch two holes in the top. Also screw-top liquor bottles didn't exist in the early fifties. Cork tops ruled.

These videos were well researched and likely the best research that has been done on the track. When it was first closed, there wasn't any interest. Later, when there was interest, nobody had access to the resources that Slap used. Pre-internet finding information was exponentially harder than today. Even today without access to Slaps personal knowledge and network of enthusiasts, I don't see how anyone could have put together a more informative piece. It may seem odd, but these videos are probably the number one authority on the track today.

@lskiller1903
@lskiller1903 4 года назад
The ring tab beer can top was first used in 1965. Prior to that beer cans were opened with can opener creating two triangular holes in the top of the can one for drinking out of and one for air. Beer drinkers carried them on their key chains. The pile of debris was a child's wagon and a chair everything needed to haul beer and sit in comfort while watching a race, but who would of just walked away and left the items after the race? And why didn't someone else take the items after someone abandoned them. Most likely all the debris was someone's trash thrown away in the woods at a later date.

The aerial photos were great. In 1964 the fan parking area and entry road from Antioch are still clearly visible. As well as the access or competitors entry road off turn three. Not to mention it looks like absolutely no vegetation is growing in the pit area inside of the 1/4 mile loop twelve years after the track closed. In the 1976 photo turns one and two and much of the backstretch are clearly still visible after the rail line and most buildings had been constructed. Thanks for your effort researching this.

A high concentration of salt in the soil would have changed, at least for the first several years, the number and types of plants that would have grown up once the area was given back to wilderness. It's not a dead wasteland, but the stripe of scraggly-looking pines with no brush around them looked like a pretty stark contrast to the deciduous trees and thick brush that was just off the side of the back stretch. A quick tour through the results of a Google search for "calcium compound reduce dust" produces some fascinating reading about calcium chloride -- in particular, its resistance to being washed away when applied to various surfaces. Looks like they _actually_ "salted the earth" enough to make it kinda sorta work. haha
@Bodi2000
@Bodi2000 4 года назад
Not sure about BC, but common salt (sodium chloride) is used as road salt in ON, for winter ice melting. Calcium chloride is hygroscopic, absorbing water - common once on dirt roads to reduce dust as the road surface stays damp. Maybe still used for that, not sure. Both are detrimental to plants. Dirt tracks around me use water trucks to wet down the track before and between race heats.

Yes, because a steel cooler full of ice and beers would have been stupidly heavy to carry that far. They used little Timmy's wagon and carted it out there and camped out. Then got so drunk they forgot about it. The cooler likely would have been blown away by wind because it is a larger and more round object than the chair or wagon.

Started watching your channel when you first mentioned this phantom track,, so cool to be able to see this come to reality of you actually getting to go there and share the place with those of us interested in your story. Subbed and glad I did seeing this made a full run from hearsay to actually being able to step foot on the location. Awesome sauce.

If you ever go back; go to the Clock resturaunt. It's right there, it's great food for reasonable prices, and it's one of my favorites (second only to the Hub, when they're open). Crazy to see the roads you grow up on in a video about historical places. Then again, who knew all that used to be on Antioch Church road? Actually, I ought to ask around the family. Knowing us, we probably did know that. I'll get back to you.

Man, it's so crazy seeing this area in a RU-vid video. I drive past the Super Inn that you passed in the intro every day on my way back and forth from college. My uncle used to work at the 3M that's basically across the street from where the track used to be. It's surreal seeing someone else filming here.

Forgive me, but I'm not quite sure the chair and stuff you found was positively from the race. In a copse of woods like that, it could easily have been someone's hunting seat, kids' camping area (kids were far more outside-y back in the late 60's, 1970's, 1980's, and would set up camps to just camp, or to drink pilfered-from-parents alcohol), or any number of other things. Pull-top beer can lids - look into what year they came about. 1950's into the early 1960's may very well have had cone-top beer cans with bottle caps. 1963 Iron City Beer became the first to use pull-tabs, but that was in Pittsburgh. The other beer companies weren't (IIRC) immediate adopters. I would suggest a metal-detector in the infield where you believe they used to work on the cars. Most likely you'd find brake cylinders, spark plugs, etc. under the soil.
@ronframe387

Working Guy: yeah what he thought was a cooler was an upside down kids wagon from my childhood days, 1960's. You are right, a metal detector should definitely turn up some cool stuff!

This was very interesting to watch. I am glad that there are people such as yourself to try and preserve history, or at least what is left of it sometimes. I can just imagine some of the people that live and work in that location probably have no idea what used to be there sixty some years ago! Sadly, I'm sure that there are other tracks out there that are forever lost and forgotten - only remembered by those that are sadly gone now as well. Fortunately, Air Base Speedway is not! Great job on this!
