Talk Description: Optimal extraction of information from astrophysical surveys datasets is a formidable computational and modelling challenge. Machine learning offers powerful tools over conventional statistical techniques to analyze these data sets. I will discuss how machine learning is used in the South Pole Telescope collaboration to dramatically speed up the computation of complex astrophysical models, thereby unlocking significant potential for accelerated scientific discovery.

Speaker Bio: Prakrut Chaubal is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, working with the South Pole Telescope located in Antarctica. His research focuses on modelling vast amounts of astrophysical and cosmological data using machine learning and statistics to understand the early universe. His recent research using lensing of the cosmic microwave background has resulted in one of the most precise estimates of the amount of matter in our universe till date.
