Sarah Winchester was an inventor, design afficionado, and general tinkerer. Her main residence was a house in Atherton, but she treated this ranch property, which she called Llanada Villa, as her place to experiment. That's why it's so weird. While the current owners of the property have dialed back a lot of the unsubstantiated (and sometimes, completely fabricated) stories about Sarah, I still recommend history professor Mary Jo Ignoffo's scholarly biography of Mrs Winchester, titled "Captive of the Labyrinth" over any other source.

I visited back in 2014 and it was truly amazing learning the story of the actual Sarah Winchester and not the ghost stories we're all used to! Like "The Hall of Fire" -- a hallway lined with fireplaces, was installed to heat Sarah's joints because she had arthritis (I think she was in her 80s when she began living at this house), and her arthritis was also what lead to the staircase with stairs that are about three inches in height so she could more easily walk up them and not have to lift her legs high up as you would with normal staircases. The slanted counter tops adjoining the sink in the kitchen were so any water that splashed up onto the counters would slide back down into the drain and return to the water tank she kept on property. She also had a very large orchard and buildings that would be used to store the fruits and workers would make jams, jellys, marmalades, and preserves that would be sold to the general stores in town! She was also a very kind employer, building residences on her property for her employees and their families to live in, she paid them well above the average of what was the norm at the time, made sure that all her employees and their families had the best health and dental care, and would often give them nice bonuses for Christmas, bought gifts for their children, and would spend Christmas (and Thanksgiving) dinner with them as she really thought of them as her family as she lost her daughter and her husband within a very short time of each other, and the only "family" she had living in that large house of hers was her niece who doubled as her caregiver later in Sarah's life. (I've heard different accounts saying that she left her niece everything, other accounts saying she left half of her fortune to her niece and the other half went to the city of San Jose or at least to different charities around the area. I know she did leave her niece her entire Tiffany collection consisting of not only jewelry, but also ornate furniture and silverware, as well as many Tiffany stained glass pieces - all of which were on display when I went, and was the first room my tour group saw. I vaguely remember the tour guide mentioning at the time that everything in that room was estimated to be $250k altogether, although I believe it's been moved somewhere else or possibly auctioned off... I'm not sure. This was almost ten years ago.) My tour guide definitely leaned more into the real story of Sarah Winchester and the house, instead of playing into the ghost stories and legend of "the curse" (he made it very clear that he didn't believe in that sort of thing), and gave pretty sound reasons to explain the "weird" and "spooky" events ghost hunters and ghost enthusiasts latch onto for that scare - such as the most likely reason the house had the "odd" layout that it did was not because Sarah was trying to confuse the spirits of the victims of Winchester firearms (he even stated that the medium everyone cites as being the one who "convinced" Sarah to move out to California and build a house for the spirits haunting her was likely a fraud attempting to take advantage of a grieving elderly woman, if he ever existed at all), but that Sarah was not an architect and didn't know a thing about construction or building a home, so she was likely flying by the seat of her pants (so to speak) and being like "Yeah I want this room here, that room there, and I want a door that just opens up to nothing, and I want this set of stairs to lead into the ceiling" and the builders had to keep up. He also stated that there were no records of any employees mysteriously dropping dead and Sarah "forcing" construction to continue as to not "anger the spirits", that the earthquake that had knocked down a tower of the home and caused a barricade to form in front of Sarah's bedroom door was nothing supernatural, but one of many earthquakes that occurred in Northern California that year. (I've heard some stories claiming that it was either residual tremors from the earthquake that caused the Golden Gate Bridge to collapse in San Francisco or the earthquake itself moving through the area - I'm not entirely sure.) If I'm remembering correctly, Sarah died about three days after the earthquake? Again, I'm not completely sure as I'm re-telling almost ten year old information from memory, but what most paranormal enthusiasts painting as Sarah "finally falling victim to the curse" was really a combination of Sarah having dealt with a long illness of some sort that drained her of a lot of her energy, and the fact that she was 83 when she passed (I believe it was "natural causes"-- likely a heart attack in her sleep). And the spooky going-ons at night while she was living in the house, the stories of employees hearing footsteps down the hall but not seeing anyone, or catching fleeting ghostly images were most likely Sarah herself. Sarah was a short woman standing all of five feet tall (some claim 5'3"), so many of her employees would not be able to see her walking on the other side of a counter taller than her - at most they would see the top of her head as she went from room to room during the night while holding a candle. I remember being extremely mad at the time of the tour because nobody was allowed to film or photograph the inside of the house, as the rights to the house were in the possession of Universal Studios at the time, and they were trying to get their horror movie about "The Winchester Curse" off the ground. The guide said it had been in Development Hell/Limbo for several years at that point, and didn't believe it would ever get made... and he was right because about four years later Universal probably sold the rights and we got that awful Warner Bros. Winchester movie in 2018! All that to say, hard agree about encouraging people to learn the real history of the woman behind the name! Admittedly, the ghost stories were what got me interested in Winchester Manor (I don't remember my tour guide ever using the name Llanada Villa or telling us that *that* was the name Sarah had given the property) - and they can be pretty fun! But I am all for encouraging folx to learn the stories beyond the ghosts and "the curse" about the real Sarah Winchester, and make the pleasant discovery of just how much of a forward-thinker and innovator she was to early 1920s California! (As my father pointed out when I regaled him with the story of Sarah and her home, "She was interested in water conservation long before it became the "Big Deal" it is now in California!") Plus there's so much more information that I didn't include in this comment out there!

Having always heard that if she continued to build on to the house she would never die-she held a seance almost every week to try and reach her deceased husband and child -both died within months of each other-but the point is she really believed she could live forever if she just kept building on to her house. She had the means to continually pay contractors to keep on building. On my bucket list must go sometime , living in L A it’s nearby, not in another state.

I went there in 1977, and it made such a big impression on me! My husband and I went back in 2015, and they had opened up so much more! A very amazing place to visit! I would love free access to roam wherever I wanted to look. I could spend days exploring that place! ( a tidbit I picked up last visit-Sarah had a patent on the corner protectors she invented to put in the corners of the stairs to make them easier to clean. When on the stairs, you see small metal inserts in the corners on the steps. She invented those to make her servants' lives easier. Pretty cool little factoid.)

My daughter and I experienced the Unhinged Tour at the Winchester Mystery House during the Halloween Season 2019. HIGHLY recommended if ever offered again. Small creepy and spooky vignettes (but not gory) with live actors placed throughout the house at night - as we followed various tour guides and no tour guides (what happened to her or him?!) up and down all through the house. An example was a disheveled and sad middle-aged man greeting us outside in early 20th c" garb and urging us not to go in and then asking us if we had seen his daughter "Suzy" (that storyline was continued during the tour itself). It was a 45-minute "tour" ("like the Haunted Mansion only creepier and in a real historic setting of mystery and lore") and will be tough to beat as we enjoy other Halloween-ie delights in the future. It was the height of atmospheric and all-around spoooktacular fun! Thank you for sharing your charming videos.

WOW!! Mrs Winchester recieved *$20,000,000.00* when her husband Will Winchester died. No wonder she could build such a massive and complex house. Amazing

Pretty sure she got a massive stake in the company as well, something to the tune of 50 percent. Def a ton of funds for the time as there were not nearly as much material things to buy as, say, now. I think 20M in 1880 is equivalent to 620M now. Still, I am always fascinated by her story!

20 MILL US dollars times the rate of inflation. 1$ back in 1860 is worth $34 today so the answer is 20 000 000 x 34. Nearly 7 Billion $.. Money aside I love this house it's amazing.

Is it possible she kept construction going so she could stay sane in her time of grief? Construction would have meant there were always lots of people around and lots of activity. That would perhaps distract her from getting stuck in depression. Even apart from that, there's something satisfying about building something. Just some thoughts without having done any research about Mrs. Winchester.

I really love the basement. I have been there for Halloween and I have run into ghosts. It was spooky and awesome. From my last visit, there seems to be a whole lot more closed off areas. That's unfortunate.

@@nathannicholson3092 the good thing about California are the beautiful places we have here. As well as the different climates. Surfing on the coast, snowboarding in the mountains, hiking in the desert... It's beautiful. Politicians here are trash, but it's California, it's expected. If you ever do come over to check out the Winchester, I would also recommend Hearst Castle, Monterey Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Coit Tower, Muir Woods, and Morro Bay. Such gorgeous views and peaceful exciting experiences.

Friend lived in Pleasanton. Had taken many relatives to the Winchester House. We went in 2004. A Sunday. Very few people there. Later in the day. Guide taking a few people on the upgraded tour said come with us. The basement and cellar was interesting. Felt the energy. She took us for over a few hours to see the entire property and grounds. Hard to beat that 70 deg weather also. Can't picture what the house looked like of the era packed full of furniture and decor.

When my ex-husband and I were driving a big rig cross country, we laid over and we took a tour of the Winchester Mystery House. It is really fantastic to see, thankfully we learned a lot about Sarah Winchester and the house, but before we took the tour, I read about her and the Winchester House.

I was born and raised in SJ and my first job was as a gift shop clerk at the Winchester. Maaan, the stories.. we had psychics come thru there, Silvia Brown once visited and toured. Rooms with documented “experiences” smoking room where the lady of the house would dine, daisy room, maid quarters, basement, gun room near the gift shop, seance room. Experiences I have ever heard of never included Mrs. Winchester always her employee’s or carpenters. But there is this residual energy feeling of being watched. Not menacing just very distinct feeling. We would always say our thank you’s then lock up at night, it was awesome place.
