50 km south of Gdansk, you'll find one of Europe's greatest treasures: the incredible Malbork Castle.
Despite the abhorrent smell of the nearby sugar factory, my tour through the world's largest castle was both an excellent introduction to the history of the Teutonic order in this region, and a great place to spend a morning wandering up its many staircases and corridors to witness some of the best-preserved (and best-restored) Medieval structures in Europe.
Admission to the castle (including audio guide) is a mere 47 Polish Zloty (around $13 USD or just over 10 Euros), making it one of Poland's most cost efficient attractions.
Malbork is the perfect day trip from Gdansk; to get here, it's a short 30 minute train ride from Gdansk Glowny Station, at a cost of $3 to $13 USD, depending on the speed and service.

I'd love to visit this place and Poland in general. As an American I envy being able to drive an hour or so and seeing these majestic Medeival castles. I really feel like I was born in the wrong time lol. I see that online this is called the largest castle in the world. Does that strictly mean Medeival castle? I realize technically later periods similar structures were more commonly called palaces since they lacked the same fortifications.
@DrifterDave

I think it’s the largest ‘proper’ castle in the world - it’s a massive structure. I’m with you on envying Europeans’ ease of travel - it’s incredible that many of my European friends feel that an 8 hour drive between Germany and the south of France is an eternity - but that sort of drive is commonplace in North America. They don’t know how lucky they have it 😃

Not the Nazis commited destruction of the castle during WW2. Destruction was commited by Russians. Nazis fortified themselves against Russians in the castle.

That's exactly how it is, Marienburg/Malbork has been in the heartland of East Prussia for centuries.

Probably tons of people told you this already but: Poland is not located in eastern Europe. It's central geographically. We are mixed culturally between western and eastern as well.
@DrifterDave
@DrifterDave 3 года назад
Hi Barbara! I mean no offence. These labels are controversial and have no agreed-upon definition (there are hundreds of website that label it central, and hundreds that label is eastern). In Canada, we are taught in school that Poland is in Eastern Europe (defined as the countries east of the former ‘iron curtain’) and also that Poland is the eastern border of the European Union). For this vlog, I use the United Nations geographical subregion definitions, for simplicity’s sake. The United Nations defines Poland as Eastern Europe, but I understand some Poles might disagree. No offence intended 🙏 unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/#geo-regions en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Europe_subregion_map_UN_geoscheme.svg
@bip5395
@bip5395 3 года назад
@@DrifterDave I am not offended I just like proper descriptions regarding geography, especially from travellers who visited the region. Even in one of links provided by you there is a map where Poland is grouped in Central Europe. The UN by putting Poland in the 'eastern' group was motivated by statistics and not official classification. As in 2019 Poland economically joined group of developed countries we have nothing more in common with Eastern Europe (and 'iron curtine' was just 25 years of the country's 1000 years of history). We use middle european time. In the middle of country eastern european and western european tectonic zones meet. Main part of polish territory is located on Central European Plain. Culture was formed by western european influences. We use Latin alphabet, not cyrillic. Poland is classified by Huntington as western civilisation. Poland is part of NATO and EU. So as you can see in 2020 there are basically no links to Eastern Europe but slavic ethnicity (which by the way is shared with Czechs, Slovakians, Slovenians and Croatians who also are not 'eastern europeans') and border of course.

@@bip5395 Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! You bring up some good points and they are definitely worth considering. As there’s no way for me to change the title of this series now 14 episodes in (which will also include Belarus & Ukraine, which makes sense ) without deleting each and every video and starting from scratch, I trust you’ll overlook this and trust me good intentions 🙏 I appreciate your perspective as a local viewer.

The castle was destroyed by the Soviets. The Germans defended themselves in the castle.

It wasn't destroyed. It was damaged, so it had to go through some restoration after the war.

@@comdo831 Yes, it was only partially destroyed. At the end of the vlog you can see the old bricks against the restored bricks. It’s amazing that they were able to make it look as great as it does. The photos of the post-WWII destruction were horrific.

What I was told is that the Nazis destroyed it so that it couldn't be used by the advancing Soviet army. But, I'm not quite sure if that's historically accurate. What's your take on it?

@NbyD Год назад
@@DrifterDave I have read Marienburg (Malbork castle) was defended by the German army against the Soviets. The latter shelled it with heavy artillery. This seems more plausible as the castle was seen by Germans as a symbol of their national identity at the time. What have you been told?
