Last Spring I paid a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina to see it's living railway history. I explored peculiar railway locations near the city of Tuzla and found active wartime steam engines (Kriegslock) and one amazing narrow-gauge railway. While exploring both locations, I managed to communicate with local people and got some insides about local life. While visiting the narrow-gauge railway, I was lucky to ride inside a locomotive to the coal mine which made my experience in Bosnia even more exciting.
Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or not, this video offers a rare glimpse into the past and present of extraordinary railways of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more railway adventures!

Had a history teacher from Bosnia. He came over right before the war in the 90s and had sad stories about his family who weren’t lucky enough to make it out. expressed a sense of survivors guilt. He Was always a kind hearted enthusiastic teacher tho, probably the only one I even slightly liked in HS.

At 4:06 he says: "I had original Russian language teacher from Russia, he told her he wants to smoke during the class, "Margarita Vladimirova can I go smoke?" "Yes, go smoke one" 5:06 He says "Just don't record that there", idk what he pointed at 18:40 You are right, they are one of most chill and friendly people that I know

I'm from Tuzla, crazy to see someone you follow here, usually we don't get many tourists because there isn't much to see. The last passenger train departed from Tuzla in 2019 to Doboj and there are no plans for any in the near future at least. Freight trains are still operating on this route. We never had many lines because the railway infrastructure here is in very poor condition and we only have a physical connection to Doboj. Anyway, great video, hope to see you back in Bosnia again

33-236 was made in 1944 by Henschel, came into service as DR 52 817, later DB 52 817 until DB gave it to Jugoslavian Railways in 1951. The other one (33-501) was DR 52 2464, made by Henschel in 1943, which came to Tuzla via the CSSR.

I was in Bosnia for 6 months in 2002/03 in the British army as part of SFOR . On the way to Glamoc I saw an old railway line next to the highway and on it there was a line of abandoned steam locos . I think the intention was to make it a museum and a short heritage line !

Hey, Vagabond! I can't believe what I saw, honestly... You had a big time there, no one was forcing you to leave those areas, everyone was kind - they invited you to record their activity... WTF, have you paid them? Because I can't believe it. Here in Romania it's a high chance to visit hospital/ police if you try to explore such areas. Very nice people, you should consider very lucky - they were really nice and you did a good job filming everything - it's very rare to see a steam locomotive under pressure, working hard nowadays.

That was one thing that helped the Soviets in WW2 , their rail guage was different than the ones used by the Germans , so it did slow things down a little bit logistically . They either had to use Soviet locomotives , or rebuild the rail lines . Both sides understood , that it was better to destroy a locomotive , than to let the enemy have it .

This is kind of amazing to think who built these, who took these for the Soviets and such have been dead for decades (probably) and they are still being used! Incredible find Vaga.

The standard gauge 0-8-0 or 0-4-0 seen at 16 59 is not a German design, it seems to be one of the many industrial 0-4-0s that were produced by the Société Alsacienne, and which are directly derived from a State railway of france 1913 0-4-0 designed for shunting. The large slide valve steam chest are caracteristic of these engines later copied for many industrial railways. The former Yougoslavia was a real museum for engines built by builders from allover the world. It might even have been orderd from the Société Alsacienne during the German occupation of France. Very interesting. Thanks

You would probably be quite safe in Russia. The problem is the difficulties in 'getting to' to Russia and some potential problems being issued a visa. But there are recent RU-vid videos around that explain the process which apparently is digital and getting efficient, particularly to overcome the artificial difficulties imposed by some western governments.

The most railwaylines on the balkans where build in narrowgauge in the beginning, because the terrain is very challenging.
