Explosiveness is easily perceptible even to newbies, but I don't know how to really quantify or measure it. You can have loud bass that isn't very explosive in nature (most "basic" subwoofers, for example). So long as the sub goes loud enough, I prefer more explosiveness over a higher Max SPL. All things equal, it's one or the other.
In my opinion, a subwoofer that has a shallower sound will be less explosive by nature, all other things equal. That's what I've heard in my room, but I haven't heard everything.
The PB-4000 sounds more explosive in Standard Mode (all ports open) than Extended Mode (1 port plugged). Despite Extended Mode "going deeper", Standard Mode "sounds deeper" (verified by measurements), and has better explosiveness.
Exact same sub, different levels of explosiveness and "depth of presentation", based on tuning alone.
You can only turn up a subwoofer so much before it drowns out the mids and highs, sounding "overdone". That's true for ANY sub. Subs with a deeper sound (depth of presentation) can be turned up more, due to the shape of the response. More Cowbell!!
Because of this, you can get higher relative in-room bass SPL with a LOWER Max SPL subwoofer!
This is evident in the graph (smoothed for easier perspective of response trends), with much higher SPL around 20-30 hertz with the green sub. The red sub is better in EVERY specification, but it "sounds shallower".
You can only turn it up so much before it's overdone at 65-90 hertz. Both start out at similar levels around 65-90 hertz, but the green sub just keeps digging deeper and deeper. That's my preference.
The deeper sounding, lower Max SPL sub with half of the power can be run louder before sounding overdone, also making it more explosive due to the stronger relative power at depth, where explosiveness truly lives. Half power, more explosive.
Buying the loudest (MAX SPL) sub is a BAD way to select a sub, in my opinion.
