Ford famously obtained a BL Mini stripped it and costed parts & labour to produce one. They believed BL was loosing money on every single Mini they sold.

...and then came the poor management practices leading to reasonable union strikes in turn leading to poorer management practices and then later ever complacent and greedy unions. A vicious downward spiral. Whilst simultaneously a decline in quality, craftsmanship and a general refusal and inability to innovate and pioneer saw the death of the UK automotive industry and other industries. External factors such as the oil shock of the 1970s and poor government policy also played their part. Thus making a mockery of all the hard work and dedication that previous generations had made to create the industry in the first place.

And all these sales achieved by opening the bonnet and pointing randomly at nothing in particular! Bonus if wearing a tweed jacket, tie and spectacles for added 'boffin' credentials.
