GenX here, child of a hippie. One year when I was little, my mom took me out trick-or-treating. What I didn't realize at the time was that my mom was stoned out of her gourd. She got lost, but she didn't want to panic me, so we just kept trick-or-treating until her head cleared and she could find our way home. By the end of the evening, I had something like 10lbs of candy.

Not only were they completely insane in calling these trends, but the “cat eye” is actually not a cat eye; it’s a winged liner. A cat eye is when there is eye liner or shadow on top and lower lash lines. I agree with Kevin, that wing is a hook.

The beige conversation was so spot on. I absolutely believe it’s the result of “The Kardashian Affect”. For better or worse the Kardashians really changed the whole game. I think our timeframe of fashion/makeup will be the Kardashian/Jenner look.

Red lip is the OPPOSITE of a trend. Red lips are classic. A trend with red lips could be pairing it with other elements of the makeup.

So are Harper's Bazaar and Allure saying that all these elements should be worn together for fall? I feel like we need to see a full face of what Allure thinks will be the next trending peak. I'll cackle if Johnny and Kevin do the next video wearing Rockstar Liner, High Wattage Blush, Whimsical Brows, Bold Lashes, Colour Pop shadow (but make it '90's Grunge-y and also Diffused), Red Lips, with a Bare Face, Doll Up the hair (don't worry about gluing down your wig if you go for a lace-front), then go back up to the eyes and add a Subtle Cat Eye. You got this guys!

I have just started doing what I like and how I want it to look. I tried following trends and beauty channels and I just got lost and didn't like what I saw. I just said f* it and do what I want now. I think it ends up falling to new and emerging artists to set up the next generation of those big moments and boundaries. I love how your guy's energy just uplifts and also inspires me to think, especailly this episode, to think of my inspired childhood of freedom of expression! I'm recently 46 and more importantly inspired by trying to copy, back when, my older, just 50 this past month, sister in the late 80's early 90's by putting stickers on my riské almost knee length black skirt, hair sprayed so much more then lightly fan almost the size of a medium pan bangs, haha! Don't forget teeze those bangs!

25:22 I have to hard agree. Typically in a show the make up is to either elevate the clothes vibe while not pulling focus away or be so subdued that the clothes stand out against the lack there of. Its not individual make up trends, which I would assume could come from new products coming out mixed with populous discourse... Normal peoples not associated with the fashion shows don't assume they would wear the runway outfits, why are the coinciding make up looks a trend. We wouldn't wear those like that either. The amount of liner we would go through doing that rock star liner look, or black shadow freakin everywhere to "cheat it". These articles are telling on themselves. If you don't know it, don't write it or get someone who does. It's not that hard.

No wonder I’m bored AF with all the brown neutrals 😆 I was 8-18 in the 80’s and I still love my big hair and blue eyeshadow. Maybe not to my eye brows but believe me, I have enough gd browns since they’re in every pallet for the rest of my life. I wish I could remember the name of my favorite lipstick from then. We had no cell phones and MTV was our lifeline to the world. Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Stevie & Madonna and movies like Footloose, pretty in pink and Farris Burler’s day off to name a few. As teenagers the last minute halloween costumes were always punk rock. We had the town church clock or bells to tell us when it was time to get back to our friend’s house after trick or treating to stay on a school night. I got a perm for my 52nd birthday and even though it not as high as I once styled it in the 80’s I’ve absolutely loved it. The hair dresser was trying to talk me out of it 😆. Glad I went for it. I have super fine hair so I needed the body. Wash, gel scrunch, air dry and go.

I agree I think we would be surprised if some of the big influencers took a stand at setting trends that were outside of the boring beige box how quickly things would change. I am so glad to have been a child of an era before social media took control of everything from how we do our makeup to what we drink and what we drink it out of. I will continue more days than not to wear my bright pinks, greens, yellows, oranges and purples eyeshadows and bright or dark lipsticks because 1) I am 70 years old and too old to give a f*ck what anyone else thinks and 2) I'm not doing it for anyone else anyway...I'm doing it for me! And it makes me happy.

The beige society is so true. Trends have partly always been about marketing and making money and the other is organic self expression. Now all trends are methods to make money. Every subculture even counter cultural ones can be bought on shein or temu next to the preppy mainstream. In the 70s to dress counter culturally one DIY it. Makeup likewise is the most versatile palatable homogenous looks so the most people buy it. Or they set a trend then next month do the complete opposite so we all have to buy new looks. I guarantee next spring/ summer matter skin will be in, we’re going to get velvety semi matte everything then fully matte in the next few year so we will have to through out our dewy routine and buy and new one

Whenever you talk about Revlon lipstick it brings me back to my day when I used to wear Revlons ESPRESSO lipliner and NATURALY NUDE LIPSTICK and some wetnwild lipgloss on top that I can’t remember what the name was but I got so many compliments. This was back in the early 90’s. Im 54 and I love you two so much and really appreciate your love for the artistry for makeup and your honesty for the industry!!!

I really needed to hear the message at the end of this video. I recently dared to be bold with a hairstyle way out of my comfort zone. I initially loved it and thought it looked great. But then the self-doubt took place, and I kept asking myself if it was too much. I went into this dark rabbit hole of insecurities and my need for external validation. I had to talk to my best friend about it and ask her how can I move forward and accept a bold decision? She told me to rock it and do it while being scared. So here I am, writing this comment and embracing my decision to be bold and daring, with all of my insecurities in tow.

Love the show this week. Idea- can you take the fall fashion colors for this year and build a makeup color story for each color of clothes. Maybe choose a cover of a fashion magazine. This would be great for your viewers and it might be a great video for designers looking for REAL TALENT to showcase their runways. Love you guys!

The boldest fashion/style moves from the past 10 years were the middle part and the switch from skinny jeans to baggy jeans.

When I was in my 20's I was obsessed with runway make up and always tried to recreate it. The problem is I am not a model, this make up only looks good on a bone structure like a models, this make up isn't meant for anything BUT the runway. MUA's I know who work in editorial don't make looks to be worn anywhere other than in photographs, as if you actually went out on the street in the it'd be smoosch within minutes

I took 1 look at what they are trying 2 send out for Beauty. Perhaps an Early HALLOWEEN Edition? All I can say is this Insecurities about my looks?? GONE!!! BTW Love the darker hair on you!!

I love the deranged magazine trends so much and hearing Johnny's experience at Out makes them make so much more sense now. They're still deranged though. 🤣 I also loved the discussion about how trends in general have been disappearing since the rise of the internet influencers, however I have to add one thing. As someone who was a teenager and young adult on the 80s, I can tell you that creativity and individuality was not really appreciated that much. I always tended to go my own way in fashion and makeup and I got a lot of comments about it. Not compliments. Maybe if I lived in a big city it would have been different, who's to say.

I don't know if either of you ever read a book called "The World is Flat" (stay with me here, its not what you think). Your conversation at the end of the pod about how fashion has been borderline neutered reminded me of it. I had to read it when i was in business school. It speaks about how there are certain landmark points in history that have "flattened" the world of business. One of them was Japan opening to the West, another was the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain coming down, and now it's the Internet. Globalizing trade and communication has many advantages, but it also has many drawbacks. Countries, cultures, business, social quirks, trends bleed into one another until theres hardly any distinction anymore. It's why you can go to the other side of the planet and still find a Starbucks and a McDonald's. It's taking all the peaks and valleys, all the differences between us, and "flattening" it all out. It's a topic I'm deeply interested in, and that's why I love it when you guys speak frankly about "influencing" and it's deeper implications. It makes me simultaneously bounce in my seat and scare me shitless to see all these things play out. Who needs Nostrodamus when you've got stuff like this?? /rant over

This just reminds me why I never care one iota about "beauty trends". You know what works? Doing what makes you feel the most beautiful. I just want to look healthy and radiant all year round, and since I live in southern AZ, that means I can wear bronzer....all year round... and not look out of place. LOL!

So we are just starting over the last couple years to do Halloween over in N.Z and its soooo fun!!!! My kids love it....and im so glad i got to see kevins gaga liner again its so gorgeous u really nailed it❤

Kevin off the top of his head coming up with some of the best & current runway fashion-based makeup ideas sent me over the moon. It would be so interesting to see makeup artists mimicking the trends and colors coming out in these designer collections. Burgundy has BEEN the color of the season, especially for Gucci and Prada. You could do a Chloé look that incorporates silvers and golds. Bottega Venetta green eyeshadow. Fauré Le Page’s slogan is “Armed for Seduction” for crying out loud, make a bullet lipstick! There’s so much room to be creative and have your models’ faces add another dimension to clothing. You both make an excellent point that artists aren’t given a lot of time, I hope that’s something that changes. Kevin, I’ll start looking for that burgundy mascara!

Kevin, I'm so jealous of your b-day celebrations. My mom stopped allowing b-day parties for me after the age of 8, and I literally had to bake my own b-day cake for my 16th birthday, and then she claimed it as her Mother's Day cake and demanded presents on my b-day as well as on Mother's Day. If I didn't celebrate the day alone with my father (my parents were actually married), I didn't get to celebrate it at all.

For me the biggest glaring issue is the lack of knowledge of actual trends online especially on TikTok and instagram. So many trends become huge on those platforms and if you want to predict more accurate trends go online and see what makeup artists outside of runway makeup and see what the kids and young adults are wearing if that’s rhe audience they want to reach. For a more mature audience can tailor certain aspects to better suit mature skin or a more natural subdued look etc. it just comes off like they don’t know what’s going on and what makeup culture is rn online. High fashion doesn’t predict makeup trends as much as it did before the internet it seems and the whole thing seems out of touch. Love the “makeup trend this fall? NO MAKEUP” made me laugh so hard. This RED lipstick craze has me verrrry anxious. So novel, so new, so city notions about cheese! I'm only 5 minutes in but I think you should both do this other amazing trend for Halloween: no makeup. No makeup as possibly the most revolutionary trend in makeup. Okay I'm only 4 minutes into this episode so let me go finish afterwards I'm treating myself with four cans of SCM. I already have the can opener ready to go! It really helps to subdue the anxiety.
