I thought that I was just bad at doing makeup for YEARS because, no matter what I did, it looked like makeup. Influencers had me absolutely convinced that there was a way to wear foundation and it look like normal skin 🗿
@littleblackpistol
@littleblackpistol 3 года назад
Influencers typically use way too much foundation and concealer as most of them are trapped in the drag queen style make-up which is the only one they really know how to do. That only looks 'good' on a stage, under stage lights, or on video, heavily lit with bright white light, and a digital filter slapped on to make it look 'normal' and 'glowing' and 'poreless'. if you saw them off camera in that make-up you'd understand how they look as bad as anyone else. I suggest following a MU like Lisa Eldridge who has professional make-up skills and doesn't rely on drag queen make-up looks. She uses as little foundation as possible, She's the creative head of Lancome and has worked as a MU on major films. One thing she says which stood out for me is that in the real world of professional film, nobody contours. Nobody. It's a stage technique to either feminize a male face or to make a face stand out to the back rows and looks appalling IRL or in a film situation where you want an actress to look beautiful but natural.

Same! I thought I was so bad and unskilled because even my basic makeup never looked like theirs. I just gave up and accepted that I was doomed to sub-par mediocrity. I've always preferred a more natural, understated look, anyway. But you see all these people literally painting on foundation like it's spackle to get that "flawless" look, but just imagine how awful and cakey it would look in normal life. The turning point for me was when the massive concealer triangles were everything. I have genetic dark circles, and even I don't need a fraction of the amount of product they use. From that point on, I was more aware of reality vs. expectation, and of the constant blurring of any semblance of humanity. No one is flawless. We all have pores. Our hair gets frizzy with flyaways. Our "imperfections" aren't imperfections at all.

@@littleblackpistol Can confirm. I've never had them contour and the look is 'no makeup, I just wake up like this' (I don't lol). They make it look SO good though and I'm always like 'damn, I wish I wasn't so tired/ it's so late and we have to be back here early, cuz I don't wanna waste this face and wish I could go out!' lol. Even in the few 'glam' scenes I've done, no contouring. Funny, I also call it 'drag makeup' since I believe I heard it was mainly invented/popularized by them.

What bothers me more than filters (which are too obvious many times) is when some skinfluencers despite having fillers, regular derm appointments, and skin procedures (what have you) and they still claim that it’s because of specific products or a routine. Instead of disclosing what really helps (like prescription products or derms) they use it to promote sponsored products. I would suggest Cassandra making a video like that...

It's really scary and kind of depressing to see the diffrence without filters... but what really shocked me, was when I saw that nearly all Snapchat filters make you nose smaller. I didn't use Snapchat for a while and once I did, I was so sad that my face looked weird with the filters on (And on everyone else it looked so good). Came to realise that it made my already tiny nose even more tiny and it looked sooo weird. The fact, that it took me a really long time to realise this...was very scary to me. The way you say women need make-up at work to look "professional and presentable" also shows how ingrained this is into our minds. When I started a new job, I wore full make-up the first few days, something I literally never do, before I felt like I was not enough, looked too young and not professional. It took me a few days to realize that this is not who I am and stop. Because I never wear make-up and I shouldn't be seen as less professional because of it
@littleblackpistol
@littleblackpistol 3 года назад
It's a really US view, tbqh, this idea that women in the workplace are not 'professional' without a faceful of cosmetics, while men are perfectly professional with just their bare skin. And a stupid one, come to that. It's not an ideal in many other countries, the more sexist and conformist ones, yes, to some degree (parts of Asia which are insanely conformist spring to mind), but I hear it most from US people in the Anglosphere.

In Mexico we have a word "arreglate" that could translate as "get ready" but the literal translation means "fix yourself" and i HATE it, what and why do i need to fix myself? im not broken, there is nothing wrong with me. I hate that we have to wear makeup and do our hair even for the most basic works. I work as an architect in a construction, with all the dirt, the concrete, polution the hot weather, the sweat they still wanted me to wear makeup. All male architects and engineers "suggested" that i need to at least wear "natural makeup" i asked them why and they could never give me an answer, they just knew that as a women i should do it. I never wore makeup, i wore a messy bun underneath my safety helmet and thats it, my work was still as valuable. We need to change our minds about it.

As a child/teenager I was so obsessed with how people look in magazines, thinking I need to look like that to be worthy. I had no idea they touch up every single hair, pore or whatever and slim the celebrities. It took me so long to realize that no one looks like this. Honestly I am glad I am not a teenager anymore with all the tiktok and Instagram filters going on. Even worse then, that adults with access to all these amazing products and procedures still use them to turn themselves into a "perfect" version

I'm an artist. I have drawn portraits and people in general for years and I almost always can tell if something is photoshopped, filtered etc.(yes, the deepfakes still have flaws too). What I see on social media makes me sad. I can't imagine the amount of people who can't see those filters and get insecure.

As an artist myself, I also learned over time that for me personally, flawless faces with model poses and perfect skin just don't bring me the joy or excitement of drawing them. The real challenge is to catch the small imperfections and silly faces, wrinkles and hairs, pimples and ditches and scars and so on. This is what makes portraits alive and this also helped me a bit to appreciate the different looks ppl have and to get myself away from that filter perfection standards. I love drawing old ppl, screaming ones, imperfect ones, like people, normal people :)

@@pinkbluepanter2374 Yes! I tell people this all the time- the best gift an art degree gave me was to appreciate every kind of age, body, gender expression etc... and that the most beautiful portraits never came from the most "conventionally attractive" person sitting for the session. It was always a face that had time etched into and distinctive features. I asked my friend's 13 yr old niece what her favorite tree and flower were and then asked "do you wish the flower looked like the tree" and she said of course not trees and flowers are different- "Is the flower less beautiful because the tree exists" she replies no that's silly. So I followed with "so do you really wish you looked like that tiktok person - do you wish your best friend Emily looked like her?" and she had an Aha of- No my friend emily is really pretty in her own way and I said so are you. I really wish figure drawing was mandatory for young people to help w/perspective.

I do freelance Bridal makeup and had a client and her friend who was also getting makeup done ask me why she could “still see her skins texture and pores” and ask if I put on a primer.. I said yes I did and it’s Skin..?! To me I didn’t understand why and seem confused about what she was asking. The girl then pulled up the picture of the look she wanted and pointed to it saying.. “her skin looks flawless, I want that..!” I kinda laughed and said After Zooming in on the photo-“She has No Pores and it probably has 2 filters on it.. that’s not what makeup looks like on Skin with pores and texture..” 🤔🤔😬🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Love that your sharing this information about Filter and how many Fake images are out there on the internet ! I grew up in the 90’s and I remember the big billboards with ads with Cindy Crawford. I remember that even though that was when someone astute told me about photo retouching, what airbrushing was about, I still looked up at that perfect woman and thought to myself: she’s absolutely gorgeous and I couldn’t ever look like that. I’ve struggled with eating disorders pretty much all my life. And even if there are many forces at work when you have an eating disorder, the images that we’re fed every day do have an effect and body images are distorted. I also have BDD - body dysmorphia (body image disorder) as one of my more “intrusive” symptoms. Even when my eating disorders are better, like a more healthy BMI, my body image still plays cruel tricks on me.
