Only difference is that in the 90s and early 2000s there was no way for videos to be leaked or the truth to be told by employees etc. today all the stories from 25 years ago are coming out thanks to Tik Tok etc. and it spreads like fire. I’m 46 and saw JLo come up in the beginning from In Living Color as a dancer. Seriously, I have never liked her. I couldn’t figure out why. I don't think it has anything to do with age... There are many singers of the same age and older who are still admired and making good money like Mariah Carey or Celine Dion. The thing is that JLO was never a household name, she was a hit during a specific time during the 2000s because her style and music framed well with what was popular at the time. Her songs are not songs like Mariah's, Celine's or Dolly's which are eternally good, they defy all eras. Besides her songs having no eternal charm, she also doesn't know how to adapt and change her style with the times so she is left behind, stuck in the era where she was successful.

I always found her overhyped in relation to the amount of talent and success she actually had. I'm from the UK, though, so she might make more sense in the US where Hispanic/Latino culture is much bigger, but here, it's not something we really care about. I'd never even heard of Selena so that fact that J.Lo played her early in her career was neither here nor there, even though she obviously thinks it's a great coup. I mean, it's not exactly an Evita/Madonna moment. Most of JLo's success in music happened at the start of her career and isn't something she was really able to build upon so she seemed to age out of the zeitgeist quite quickly. And to me, I don't think she has icon/legend status, she's just someone with a decent publicist who managed to keep her in the tabloids. So with this latest project, I feel she overestimated the level of interest. Sure, her hardcore fans will lap it up, but the general public seemed unlikely to invest in a celebrity who peaked around 20 years ago.

I met her once, when i worked at a casino. When Ben and her were together waay back in the day. Ben was having a good time, laughing and smiling. He's so funny and sweet. He's super generous and friendly to all the workers. She showed up, and gave him the stink eye when he tipped the cocktail girl. Snatched the chip off her tray and put it back on the table in front of him. You can almost see the joy die in him. He liked to bet tips for the dealers and the table runners. Especially if he likes you. He put the tip up and she tried to snatch it and he stopped her. Telling her that once the money is down you can't touch it. They were like whisper fighting and he gave us all an I'm sorry look before cashing in and leaving. I cheered for him when they broke up and cried when they got back together. You can go to any bodega and ask them for a ham and cheese sandwich on a roll; they will still be standing there waiting for the rest. Keep in mind if you go to any bodega and order a shame & cheese on a roll that will still be paradise! True story; I had to give a ride to a friend of my wife once. We were talking about BS because it's a 20-minute car ride. She claimed that she spent some time in NYC. She asked me what I missed the most and I told her my local bodega and her eyes lit up. She said YES, she told me her go-to order and I'm like YES, you know what I'm talking about. It was nothing close to J Lo's genetic order.
I don’t know if anybody else watched her stint as a judge on NBC’s World of Dance, but if you watched it, you’d notice she was weirdly catty to female contestants. She would give them bad critiques, stare down at them, rarely ever smile at them. But overtly praise male dancers or groups. Maybe it’s because Jennifer Lopez first career (as a Fly Girl dancer in “In Living Color”), she wasn’t even first pick. The dancer they first hired got sick, and that’s why they called her in. Jennifer Lopez’ whole shtick is that she’s a dancer/performer first before singer. And even then, she’s a mediocre dancer. She’s just someone who was lucky in the right place and in the right time.
