Oh this is funny. I used Google translate to translate "udder cream" to the Dutch "uier crème", and to my surprise this stuff is sold everywhere here for people. They literally use the name "udder cream" for a consumer product! I guess there are a lot of farmers here, and they discovered this trick a long time ago.
@bendenisereedy7865
@bendenisereedy7865 День назад
Chamois cream is just a standard emulsion of water with oils and waxes. A bit of zinc oxide suppresses bacteria along with the usual biocides you'll find in any emulsion. And yes, udder cream is the same stuff without the perfume and a fancy label. Sudocrem is probably the best cream for sore skin.
@lesliereissner4711
@lesliereissner4711 День назад
I have used store-brand diaper rash cream for years after discovering that cyclist-specific chamois cream uses the same ingredients. Probably not as inexpensive as this udder cream but works well. I think American friends are using Bag Balm, which is also an udder cream. Probably the biggest rip-off in cycling is $350 jerseys!

The danger of buying those large tubs is bacteria growing in the cream. I think you need to be very careful about scooping the cream out of the big tub. Use a clean, dry spoon, move a required blob size to a bowl and then use fingers from bowl to your bits. If you keep sticking your fingers into the big tub you may cause bacteria to flourish and thus find yourself with a different kind of painful skin problem.

Been cycling 56 years raced pro in ultra-marathon, my longest race a 5150 kilometer non-stop time trial. But training at 2500K a month I had to have a perfect answer for all contact points on the bike. Chamois cream was then just something for those who used a leather (natural) chamois in their shorts. I used a synthetic and so never used a cream in my life. So shorts back then were something we didn't think about much, they functioned perfectly with a very thin layer of anti-friction material and the lycra fabric. Interfacing the shorts with a Brooks leather saddle completed a contact point that served me well even in a 10 day non stop time trial. Today all we get from EVERY manufacturer is THICK padded shorts like wearing a diaper, not supposed to have padding, the thick padding have thick seams at the edge even when taperd. So, today I have all kinds of problems, and I can't buy the simple shorts I used 40 years ago so effectively. After trying 30 different brands and shapes of shorts over the last 10 years of this "padding" fiasco, I am buyinig a sewing machine next year and will be making all my own cycling clothes. WTF happened to this market where every cycling business makes all the same junk? The shorts need to be thin and air circulating so you are dry all the time, being wet is where the problems begin, the skin wet combined with friction will create soars very quickly. So my old Canondale shorts with a millimeter of anti-friction layer and just good fitting lycra is what I am returning to. Padding? Where did that come from? Padded saddles and padded shorts are a massive problem for cyclists. A thin breathable short and a saddle that perfectly matches your sit bones solves this problem.
@atmywitsend1984
@atmywitsend1984 День назад
Great advice. I am the most sweaty cyclist I know,and have been cycling for close to 50 years and I too prefer the less padded shorts. I haven't done the distances you have,but I have many days in the saddle over 10 hours,and thankfully I have never had saddle sore. Maybe it is pot luck. I totally agree with the excessive padding on modern shorts.
@batmonkey
@batmonkey День назад
Agree, used to ride a lot in such shorts, never had saddle sores, and never understood why people would want to add creams down there. A thin padding layer that conforms to - and is pulled close around - your body just obviously seems superior to thicker layers that will crease, displace, and hold moisture.

We always used carbolic acid for cow's tits (yes, they are supposed to be called tits) which is black and kind of like tar and really pungent. Really sticks to the tits and we applied it after each milking if the cow was having problems. Whenever we got chapped lips, we would use it on our lips and it would clear up the chapping right away. This was back in the 50's & 60's so don't judge; kids were tougher back then. I grew up and left the farm but this brought back memories, so great video.
