not just asia, italian parents are like that as well. i had a coworker who used to drive his truck down there all the time and whenever he stopped at a company around lunch time, they made him eat a giant bowl of pasta and gave him more food for the road, like "what you're in a hurry? well sad for you we won't unload your truck until you're done eating."

nah dude cannur is the protagonist who gets in trouble all the time because of his monke personality, but secretly he is what the world needs most, he'll bend the rules to get the job done. grant is the rival, he succeeds because of his monk training, he has discipline and never gets into trouble, cannur tries to get a rise out of him, but fails miserably because of garnts monk ways. joey is the supporting character, he gets roped into cannurs antics and gets in trouble because of him, but it's ok because they're friends.
When Garnt said he had to learn how to make eye contact, I felt that to my core. It’s seriously difficult to maintain eye contact without seeming like you’re staring into the person’s soul.
I remember feeling so awkward doing it but then realizing that the other person also feels weird and now I just look at them in the eye till they look away for a bit and reset. Bam, social hack.

That translation thing when traveling with your friends who don‘t speak the language is so true. I took my friend to Vietnam 2 years ago and at some point you really start to get annoyed by translating the whole day.
I find it very enlightening on how Aki broke down the harmful effects of cancel culture. The fact we are always being monitored and be judged on that moment even years down the line is unethical. People change and they deserve their redemption. Yes, people need to be held accountable, but not by the mob that changes their minds every next trend but with actual authorities. Props to her for maintaining boundaries as a RU-vidr.

As a fellow Filipino, I'm jealous of Aki having more welcoming and open minded parents. My folks are 2 sides of the same coin, my dad is ok with me having a social life, but gets on my ass on what to do as a job. Whereas my mom is fine with my job decisions, but hates any social interactions I try to make. My life is very polarizing when they are involved in the worse way...
Parents are very special, and worth nurturing above all others. However, nothing should curtail your life decisions. Good luck with your chosen job, and have fun with your friends!
My mom is more on the supportive one and my dad pushes me to get his dream job. Mom just goes do what you want and love. I still wouldn't change them for anything in this world.
Okay when aki started talking about how she didn't want to date other Southeast Asians because they felt like she was dating her brother and made me think of a story my mom told me so my mother is also Filipino she got in trouble back in high school when she brought home a boy and my grandpa told her that that was one of her cousins (distant cousins don't worry they didn't do anything and it was a short relationship) because you have so many cousins over there that you don't even know everybody I have a whole bunch of cousins that even if I've met them I don't know all of them I keep getting friend requests on Facebook and they all have the same last name as my family but I have to ask all the time if I actually know them or if they're just someone with the same last name 🤣😅
If you live in the bigger Cities it's very unlikely to happen. But when you're in the provincial areas where you only live an hour or 2 away from your relatives. It's completely possible to meet someone you had no clue you were related to.
I really enjoyed Garnt's thoughts on cancel culture (people are people, even influencers; why is their ability to make mistakes slammed) and the morality of watching true crime (feeling sick bc this entertainment is lives being ruined and that someone was sick enough to do these things).
a thought that came up for me while listening to it was like, we've been watching this been put on celebrities for years and engaged in it (some more than others ofc). But we're only addressing it now? its interesting how we suddenly become aware because there's a bigger connection between fans and creator now

I first discovered Aki through her vocaloid videos and that's also how I discovered vocaloid. I would watch her vocaloid videos all the time which lead me to watching her other videos and ended up becoming a fan. In the process I also became a vocaloid fan and still am to this day. Through Aki I was able to discover other RU-vidrs like Joey and Connor which resulted in becoming fans of them as well. I have nothing but respect for her!
I have mixed feelings on cancel culture. On one hand, I do think it can get out of control. On the other, I do think that there are famous and wealthy people of pop culture and the internet that are doing horrible things and the laws that are in place to keep those vulnerable safe are not being applied to them. Therefore the only way they are held accountable is by the popular opinion of the public, which helps influence whether or not these people get sponsors and/or opportunities to make money that contributes to their wealth and status.
I can't believe Aki went through JROTC and a notoriously tough one. Now I'm just imagining her in a drill instructor's uniform yelling at cadets and it's kinda funny.
We had an on campus rifle range in our JROTC bunker. I thought that was normal for all schools. Plinking .22s during lunch while a couple of teachers brought in 9mms and .45s was the norm. 'Merica, fuck yeah. The 90s was a magical time.
Hell, I'm Japanese, and I went though JROTC school my first high school year in America. It's was one of those hardcore military school, school campus in middle of bumfucknowhere, dorm life, and JROTC training 24/7, completely cut off from the outside world. This was 30 years ago though. Still kinda traumatized lol Edit: Keep in mind, this was BEFORE the internet days. Internet wasn't a big thing until my early college years. So physical seclusion was essentially a complete isolation from rest of society.
So much respect for Aki!!! 💜 I joined the Army Reserve for 8 years, but I never went to JROTC in high school. If I had, I would have been more prepared BUT I also feel like it would have scared me away from the Army 😂 I was super quiet, shy, and introverted, so it completely changed me. Plus, serving your country is like doing something bigger than yourself and being a part of a huge military family. The benefits are also a big help! If anyone wants to pursue it in his/her career, just make sure it’s something you can commit to long term.
By the way, I live in Northern Virginia and I say “y’all” all the time 😂 We’re considered a southern state and we have a lot of farmland, so it’s still part of our lingo (though most of the northern/DC area is pretty normal).
Coat of Arms are a European thing, but Canada and the US also have their own Heraldry Organizations. I’m not sure about the legal/paperwork process to get a coat of arms in the UK, but it must be really cool to find out your bloodline origins! I need to join the DNA bandwagon 😂
In the Philippines (and Southeast Asia in general), kids usually grow up watching anime, so it's not really that weird to parents. Heck nowadays, even some parents (who are from the 80s and 90s) are still watching anime.

There's a great book called The Frighteners: Why We Love Monsters, Ghosts, Death & Gore by Peter Laws which explains a lot about why people really like horror and crime series. Women tend to be the larger consumers of horror, especially in which women are the victims and there is a definite element of 'what would I do/how would I get out of this?' in a safe space. But the book is really entertaining.
Just to add to this, there was a good dramatisation of the Stephen Port killings on the BBC recently, called Four Lives. It squarely focused on the lives and families of the victims rather than aggrandising the killer. A nice change in direction for these things.
As far as Americans being accepting about weird hobbies it really depends on where you are especially back in 2007. If you're in a small town area you like anime back in 2007 you would get bullied.
It's a half and half. I've liked anime since 1st grade and shared it readily. Most people were interested. Occasionally some idiot would try to pick a fight, but belittling their intelligence was a go to. It only came to a fist fight, like, twice.
I really got into anime back in high school with the anime club we had. I just remember that club meeting during my freshman year were always what I looked forward to, and that was late 2008 to 2009. After the people I knew graduated, someone else took over and it wasn't as fun, so I just hung out with other people I knew.
Pre 2007 and in a smaller town omg I got so fucking bullied during my life about my nerd hobbies. The times just starting catching up with it by the time they’re talking about.
