Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka always really unnerved me and creeped me out. Even the remake with Depp was creepy in its own way, though I overall found that movie not great and thought that giving him that weird origin story was unnecessary. This one definitely didn't have the creepy factor. I don't know if Chalamet could capture that vibe even if they tried to go that route. Which I don't think it's necessarily objectively bad or good if the movie has a different vibe, but the whole thing just doesn't feel very Roald Dahl (I think a big thing that throws it off for me is that Wonka is still an adult here). I just don't think it's a movie we needed another remake for and I don't think Wonka needed an origin story, especially one like this.

To be honest I rather the backstory from the 2005 film were Wonka's dad was a dentist and wonka never ate chocolate and when he did he had a massive fight and left home to do taste every chocolate in the world, which of course translated to him making chocolate. He was passionate about candy, he always admired candy shops and the work it came with it. I hate the "I inherited my mothers dream" in this movie because its shallow, anyways that's my rant.
@jphaggerty9046
@jphaggerty9046 2 месяца назад
I was thinking the same thing! The origin the 2005 movie offers gives both a genuine conflict in the way Wonka's dad treats him and also provides insight into why Wonka is so, for want of a better word, "odd." Being denied candy throughout his youth drives Wonka to become obsessed with it, striving to create perfection at the cost of other aspects of life such as family or even basic human interaction. It explores Wonka's psyche the best out of all adaptations, imo and is still my favourite portrayal of the character.
@Sylloyo
@Sylloyo 2 месяца назад
@jphaggerty9046 yess!! Idk why they needed to give us an origin when we already have one, and a very good one! They just didn't care storywise and you can tell by the amount of plotholes that this movie has.

This movie completely neglected that Wonka is actually a pretty dark character. This is literally the antithesis of Wilder's Wonka...and Depp's too. At least Depp created a creepy, imperfect version of the character that had some childhood emotional trauma to explain why he was such a nut. This version basically made him Glinda from The Wizard of Oz. It was like if someone took Jurassic Park and made it a FernGully-style cartoon parable where the raptors were voiced by Josh Gad. The reason the original movie was so whimsical was because it was mainly from Charlie's POV, the reason the remake was so dark was because it was from Wonka's POV Also, how high were the writers that they decided to name one of their main characters 'Noodle'? That definitely sounds like someone mixed up their naming list with their lunch order.

Agree. They once again stripped away the traits that made OG Wonka so interesting and intriquing. I don't mind origin stories, but in order to do them correctly, you gotta respect and understand the source material to connect the dots and Hollywood fails at this miserably.
@gingergoddess8953
@gingergoddess8953 2 месяца назад
@@Monicalia Like, I don't have much of a taste for the remake from 2005, but the origin story scenes did fit the film and the character quite well. I could believe Wonka became an eccentric candy maker because his dad was a fascist dentist. Thats actually pretty great. They should've made a musical out of that. Christopher Lee as some kind of child's book Sweeney Todd would've been amazing.
@bishielurfer
@bishielurfer Месяц назад
Yeah I didn't care for the Depp remake, but I did think they did a good job of capturing that "unhinged and probably dangerous" vibe, even if they went for a different flavor of it. The Depp version had elements I liked (such as updating some of the things the kids were into) but I thought its main fault was it dipped way into what was "trendy" among movies at the time so it ended up being really dated (also the music wasn't great).
@gingergoddess8953
@gingergoddess8953 Месяц назад
@@bishielurfer Thats a good assessment. It wont be timeless like the original film is, but it did do something different that added to the lore in a way that made sense. I liked the environment. One thing Burton never gets wrong is a dark, quirky environment. And yeah I get what the music was going for (like Danny Elfman wanted to capture the vibes of a circus mixed with an industrial factory) but the buzzy sounds and the 'la las' got annoying

Another plot hole is that people flying into the sky uncontrollably due to a Wonka product happens in the 1971 movie where it's the Fizzy Lifting Drinks and it's presented as 1. A new invention that is still in development 2. A wonderful new novel idea/effect that the kids had never seen before 3. Cannot be sold yet because Wonka deems it 'too powerful' and dangerous because children would be 'floating all over the place' So how come at the very beginning of his chocolate journey he has a chocolate that essentially does the exact thing an unfinished Fizzy Drink product does decades later that Wonka himself deems to be not ready for consumption? If this chocolate had already existed with the same effect as a DANGEROUS PROTOTYPE then how come it was something that was under wraps company secret and brand new to both the children and the adults in the room? Like this isn't a product you could actually sell as it currently is because people would literally be sent off into space. That's why it was only in the tour and he was explicit in saying no one even on the tour was meant to drink it.
@danilutka
@danilutka 2 месяца назад
Maybe Fizzy Lifting drink is different because it doesn't use the bugs? Also, there is nothing in Wonka that says you have to burp to get down again. If I remember correctly Wonka says Fizzy Lifting Drink fills you with gas which is not a description for the chocolate version. So maybe the drink was a natural progression from the chocolate. Most likely it was an overlook detail.
@RebaMedia
@RebaMedia 2 месяца назад
@@danilutka I'm saying that the chocolate in Wonka has the same dangerous properties that Willy Wonka considered unfit for consumption whether it was chocolate or a drink. The only reason people didn't float into space in Wonka was because they were all inside a building in it's first scene, but in it's last scene the Chocolate Cartel start flying up into the sky and only catch themselves onto an object before getting too far. No one was given instructions on how to get down and if Wonka had given them off screen, the Cartel should've know how to get down since they were in the first scene. If anything the chocolate is seemingly MORE dangerous because you can't just burp to get down again and yet is deemed acceptable to sell for consumption. Also again the floating effect is considered novel and is a secret kept in the factory in 1971. If the flying chocolate already existed and was well known decades prior to the 1971 film then all the adults should know about it since they would've been around when it was introduced and the children should know since the Wonka brand is so popular and they are all obsessed enough with the chocolate to get golden tickets. Yet they all act amazed by the effects of the Fizzy Drink despite a chocolate having the very same effect.

The recent MCU, all the Disney remakes, Frozen 2, any sequel of a popular franchise that didn't need to be made...it all feels soulless and devoid of any actual reasoning to exist. I just don't get what's happening out there with movies anymore.

And the only thing I think of merit that the Johnny Depp version has, is the accuracy to the book, aside from the weird father backstory. I don't care for Johnny's performance, but the rest of it, down to the Oompa Loompa's songs, were pulled directly from the book and I loved all of that.

Two of the most irritating things about the film is 1. We never learn "Noodles" real name, her family name sure, but not her actual name. This nickname was given by the laundry owners and she meets her mother in a silent scene. 2. Why didnt wonkas mother every teach him how to read? She knows how, hes about 10. And she writes him a sweet note that she knows he cant read. What on earth 😅 I did enjoy the giraffe song though but thats about it. My only movie class was with a professor that argued really effectively why the Johnny Depp version was good. Basically, that one made a strong statement about how our society has turned children into products for consumption. And the Wilder one was going at all sorts of social issues. The Dahl original was about how much he hated kids and the Jews. This one is just...a product.

I trusted it because it was by the creators of the Paddington movies but somehow that backfired. The plot of Wonka was a weird amalgamation of the two Paddington movies with Wonka tacked on. wide eyed newcomer who comes to a big city and wins everyone over “ Paddington” then gets imprisoned where he makes friends with other inmates and helps them escape “Paddington 2”. There are many more similarities but it would take too long. On another note I normally really like Kegan Michael key (Shmigadoon’s cancellation was a crime) but his character in Wonka was uncomfortably fat phobic and grotesque. I felt physically ill looking at him in his fat suit. I get that he’s a reference to Augustus Gloop/ Violet Bowregard but I thought it was unnecessary in this day and age. Edit: I don’t mind it being a musical, I love musicals but I wish it was a better musical. It would have been better if it had been a globetrotting adventure story about how Wonka learned about different kinds of chocolate and met the Oompa Loompas. I love Hugh Grant but I think it would have been better if they cast little people in the roles of the Oompa Loompas.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked that there's none of the globe-trotting adventure and, instead, an unexpected (and unrealistic) rise out of poverty / critique of authority. Wilder's Wonka had that massive contract with the unreadable "tiny print" - why would he do that after having had this experience at Scrubbits' ? How could he possibly be illiterate and yet have a (magic) portable chocolate-making factory, a history of world travel, and plans to run a business? How are we supposed to believe he's so destitute when he dresses better than everyone else *just so he can look the part of Wonka* ? This story makes no sense and I have no idea how it earned so much money

Unfortunately I don’t have much faith based on previous works these days because I’ve heard and witnessed too many stories about storytellers and filmmakers with a success getting contracted by a studio ostensibly to try to make something new that also succeeds and then micromanaged and studio-interfered into the ground. Heck, one filmmaker stated on a now-dead blog that after his experience he refused to write anything that wasn’t on spec it was so bad. ETA: that is to say, it could very well have been studio execs pressuring them to make it more homogenous and ‘what worked before’ as if it’s a formula and not creative energy and commitment that created the first successes

Just want to clarify that it wasn't Wilder himself but the screenwriter(s) and one of the producers who really boxed Roald Dahl out of the process and left him hating the '70s film. It's for that reason his estate now works on Dahl adaptations - to ensure they're faithful to the source or at least faithful to the vision for that story. If little people had been cast, I think it’s probable there would have been average height people getting outraged on their behalf without actually bothering to seek their input. I think this highlights the need to take a step back and consider who you are really thinking about and where your information is coming from when making creative decisions such as these.
