Exposing using EL ZONE in post & creating MONITOR LUTs

UPDATE
It turns out EL Zone is patented, so I've had to remove the files I originally had available for download, sorry.
EL Zone is a simple but powerful idea. Let’s display digital image values as ‘stops’ of linear light, just as we do on-set. So far, this system is limited to SmallHD monitors and a select few cameras, but in this video I go through the EL Zone DCTL that I made to use this in colour grading, and how to export a LUT to use this system (in a limited way) on any monitor or camera that supports LUTs.

00:15 - The problem with false colour
01:22 - What is EL Zone?

I’ve done this lut myself almost 2 years ago and to speed up your workflow you need to put your rec.709 conversion underneath the ELZONE lut then match middle grey on grey card “rec709 with ELzone” combined “MAKE IT A LUT” then switch back and forward to your conversion and your “rec.709 conversion combined with el zone” then your exposure should be perfect every single time.

@EzraaaDave unfortunately like the owner stated, they claimed copyright, therefore the distribution is not allowed. If you want use CHAT GPT and you can code it just using mathematical formulas, the dctl can be coded based on C, it took me 1 hour of coding to create a dctl but based on RGB values for skin tones, has a different purpose then measuring luminance and has nothing to do with El zone, it mainly read colors to adjust white balance manually for any kind of environment, the principles for coding are the same.. just Google it and you can do whatever you want coding your own dctl without even knowing how to code. Good luck!

Hey Man, great video! I was wondering what made you stop sharing the DCTL. I'm planning to make a video about exposure and contrast ratio and share something similar as well. Anyway great video
@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 2 месяца назад
I was contacted by Ed Lachman's team. The patent shouldn't really be valid, mathmatical transformations and graphical representations of data are specifically called out as not being patentable, although they can trademark the name and argue that the specific colours they developed count as IP they can copyright. I would like them to succeed in making a universal standard and don't mind them making money, but if I were them I would be giving away stuff like this for free to get everyone on board, and then trying to get money back from the monitor manufacturers. I'm actually working on something different now for dialing in contrast ratios, so keep an eye out for that.

I tired to import the sony slog3cine from your github into my fx3 and my atomos monitor it didnt work i assume its 66 point. I brought the "github slog3.cine.cube" into resolve (worked great) I generated a 33 point version of that lut. when i look at the image with the lut as a node in resolve the middle grey parts are grey but when i use the "generated lut" on my atomos monitor (no lut on resolve node) the same image from resolve there is no grey for middle grey. Middle grey goes green or yellow. any ideas? i also tried to go CST linear + el zone linear DCSTL to generate a 33 point cube but it yields same lack of middle grey results.
@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 5 месяцев назад
For me middle grey is there on the lut version, but it is much harder to see because it changes to the next colour so quickly. You might be experiencing the same problem? The exposures around and including middle grey are actually half-stops for increased precision, but I think the LUT approach isn't precise enough to usefully manage that. I am intending to revamp the colours anyway and call it something else when I get the chance, as another commenter pointed out to me 'EL Zone' is actually trademarked. When I do that, I'll switch to full stops for the whole range.

Hi Great video! Where did you download the colorbar image from?
@philpritchard5173
@philpritchard5173 5 месяцев назад
This is great thanks. I was hoping someone would do this. With Red Komodo I've noticed slight discrepancies between my light meter, Red's in camera 'Gioscope' and the EL Zone on my small HD. It's only between a stop and a half stop but still Interesting. It may be the 'range' of values being used ...i..e..exactly when does one color change to another between the stops. Or perhaps my meter needs recalibrating. Need to investigate further.
@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 5 месяцев назад
For the most part it changes at half stops, so that the 'whole number' value of the stop should be dead centre of the colour range. It's different around middle grey because those colours are half stops, so there's an awkward changeover point where the whole stop isn't dead centre. I'm going to remove the half stops at some point though as that level of precision doesn't seem to play well with the LUT approach. If you want to customise the DCTL yourself, just open it in a text editor. The changeover points are intuitive enough and it's a simple script.

You won't be able to use the DCTL. The luts should work, and there's probably a way to write a plugin that does it as precisely as the dctl, but I'm not familiar enough with how those work in other editors to tell you how to do it.
@cinematographynow

Hi, thanks for making this. Is it possible to add the CST into the DCTL so we only need to use one node by adding the option to change input color space and gamma as well as output color space in the DCTL settings interface? This way there would be no option to use a different output than linear or a different tone mapping than none. So not only would the workflow be cleaner because we do not need a second node, it would also have less possibilities for user errors. Thanks.
@DiodeFilms

You certainly could, assuming you're using a well documented transform like DWG. I just couldn't be bothered as it seemed easier to use nodes and then just save it as a power grade.

Hey! Great video, and amazing that you’re giving the DCTL away for free. You seem like a pretty smart guy, so I have a question for you! I’ve currently been using the EL Zone via my Small HD. Ed Lochman (Sp?) calls for a log image to get the most out of the EL Zone System, which is actually what you’re required to do if you want to use the function in the monitor. That said - say I’m wanting to use some reference images to replicate a look I’ve seen in a film… If I take a screenshot from say… Sicario, it’s obviously a graded, non log, image that has been manipulated tremendously from what started in the pipeline… But what I should be really looking at is the ratios within the scene, because in theory - if I get the ratios right, I can manipulate the levels using an exposure (offset, or exp DCTL) adjustment and it will still retain the look from the reference. Am I thinking about this correctly?
@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 4 месяца назад
Your screenshot will likely be in Rec709, so you would need to use a CST to get from rec709 to linear, and then send that through the DCTL. The problem with this is there isn't a single 'correct' way to transform to rec709 so it will only give ballpark values, and the dynamic range will be severely limited. It might still be a useful thing to do though. You'd be able to roughly see the contrast ratios between different parts of the scene.

Hmm, perhaps you're right. I honestly had not noticed it was trademarked, but so it is. I got the impression he was invested in getting everyone on the same system, but I guess only if you pay him? Regardless, you can't trademark the concept of stops, and the math can't be trademarked because it was done by the manufacturers of the camera(s). I suppose the only thing he's really 'invented' is the colour scheme and the name, so if I change the colours and call it something else I should be golden. That's a shame, because it would be good to have a universal standard.

I've tried, it doesn't work amazingly. Rec709 isn't a specifically defined log curve like slog, DWG etc, so how to mathematically go from a rec709 to linear is unknown and varies from image to image, plus the colourist's work is baked in to the image. You can get an approximation, but the accuracy is off enough that you're safer just shooting some tests for yourself. It gets worse the further you go from middle grey too, so if you try it on some of the more dark/moody/modern looks you won't be able to get anything useful.

@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 5 месяцев назад
Cullen's exposure DCTL? Isn't that just for changing exposure? All my DCTL needs is a linear signal, if the values are wrong, my first assumption is that the colour management is wrong somehow. Make sure tonemapping is off too.
@JimRobinson-colors
@JimRobinson-colors 5 месяцев назад
@@DiodeFilms I actually said feeding your DCTL. cullens exposure DCTL will set the middle grey to the color space of choice and then create a stepped ramp of greyscale values. I only mentioned it as to what is feeding the middle grey and all the stepped stops, as opposed to jsut a photo, so I can see the colors of each stop that your DCTL produces. It has no bearing on anything that your DCTL does - just creates an image that should reproduce the EL zone chart showing the stops. I just tested it with a stepped greyscale ramp generated in Resolve in a compound clip ( no grading ) and the colors don't match to EL zones that I see online. And I can assure you I know how to set up color management correctly. I guess before commenting I should have took the DCTL RGB and checked the clors myself to an EL zone chart.
@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 5 месяцев назад
@@JimRobinson-colors not sure if I can figure out exactly what's going wrong without seeing your node set up. The grey chart DCTL that I use is just outputs simple linear values (you can't mess with colour space) and the colours appear exactly where they should be for me. I assume by Cullens you mean Cullen Kelly? He likes to work in a log colour space, so I expect the exposure chart outputs the correct exposures as they would fall onto a log curve like Davinvi Wide gamut/ arri etc, rather than linear? Is there a linear option on it? Similarly, I assume your greyscale ramp shows pixel values from 0-100%, which will be gamma corrected, rather than linear values. The DCTL measures stops, so middle grey is 18%, the next stop is 36%, then 72%, then 144% (which will clip when you display it without the DCTL) and then continues up for a few more stops.
@philipvivarelli
@philipvivarelli 5 месяцев назад
@@JimRobinson-colors Hey Jim, I got curious, if I can reproduce this issue, since I'm using both Cullens DCTLs and this EL Zone DCTL. For me the colors perfectly match to the chart I see on the EL Zone website. I'm using the "CKC Exposure Chart v1.2" in Davinci Wide Gamut / Davinci Intermediate before converting to linear Gamma. (Tone Curve in Cullens DCTL is set to Davinci Intermediate). I've also done a test with a Middle Gray Patch by using the same DCTL and setting the total steps to 1 and disabling the "Show Ramp" and then one node later used the Global Exposure of the HDR Wheels. The Patch changed the colors at the correct stop values, just like expected. (For the half stops it changed at 0.25 & 0.75, for the full stops at 1.50, 2.50 which makes sense. It already works with any bit depth. DCTLs use values from 0-1 (0-100%) rather than 0-255 or 0-1024 etc. The Lut issue is due to the way LUTs function with a particular resolution. Great video still, and you inspired me to replicate a version of my own, this is a super helpful tool for anyone shooting with a camera in LOG. Had no prior knowledge to coding. Took me quite a few days to figure out the coding part as well as all the various Log curve data by the various manufacturers. I created a DCTL that lets you select what Log curve you are using, and I also decided to use the Log curve data so it is not only accurate but also you won't need a CST to use it with. But of course not all sensor performs the same, so adjustments may still be needed depending on the camera you're using. My reference table has data not just for whole stops, but also in 0.1 stop increments. If anyone wants to have a look at the reference table, I can share them. I suppose creating your own version with data available won't be considered breaching of copyright laws right?
