Thank you for explaining the circumstance of when you would use exposure compensation as opposed to spot metering.

Nice! I'm aware of some pros who shoot Manual in ever-changing run-and gun events when they need to lock two legs of the exposure triangle and adjust the third (manually) depending on what they're being told at the time by the meter. The issue is that many cameras, when being told to automatically control one or two aspects, will "silently prefer" some settings or ranges. You have to really know your camera's design in order to trust even the semi-auto modes.

buffalobob2002 Each camera is a bit different, but I do say in the video that most of them have a plus / minus that you can adjust.

@@DavidBergmanPhoto What does it adjust? Shutter speed, aperture or ISO. If it is a mix, how is it mixed?

So David, I understand flash compensation when you set it on the flash. But doesn't some cameras have flash compensation as a camera setting? How does using it there differ from adjusting the shot shoe mounted flash controller.
@DavidBergmanPhoto
@DavidBergmanPhoto 4 года назад
UXO22 Some cameras allow access to the flash settings in the camera menus. It’s the same as setting them in the individual flashes (or using the external wireless transmitter). I like the transmitter (for Canon, it’s the st-e3-rt) because it’s gives you more groups, and other settings.

Hey Dave, one follow up question. When we use exposure compensation on the camera, which part of the exposure triangle are we actually modifying? Is the camera adjusting exp time? Opening more the diaphragm? Moving the iso? Neither? I ask because any of those could end up changing the result we want...
@nelsonfoote7641
@nelsonfoote7641 4 года назад
rgarciamainou I was wondering the same thing.
@DavidBergmanPhoto
@DavidBergmanPhoto 4 года назад
Great question. It depends which mode you’re shooting in. For example, in aperture priority (usually called Av), you set the aperture and ISO and the camera changes the shutter speed. In full program, you never really know what it’s going to do since the camera controls all three settings.

Your first explanation is wrong. Exposure is NOT how bright or dark an image is. Exposure is how much LIGHT is reaching this image. Exposure compensation refers to how bright or dark an image is - and this has to do with exposure (shutter speed plus aperture) and the ISO (the sensitivity to light of the image sensor)
@uxo2255
@uxo2255 4 года назад
Isn't how bright or dark an image directly proportional to how much light is reaching the subject(s). Also, you use the work image, you don't have an image until after you have taken the shot. Therefore light can't reach the image, it reaches the subject.

@@DavidBergmanPhoto No we are not saying the same thing. You are talking of EXOOSURE but what you really are talking about is EXPOSURE COMPENSATION. Exposure refers to how much LIGHT is coming into the camera. It's governed by the 1)shutter speed, the 2)aperture opening and the 3)size of sensor. Exposure compensation refers to the BRIGHTNESS of the image. It's governed by the 1)shutter speed, the 2)aperture opening ,the 3)size of sensor AND THE 4)ISO OF THE SENSOR. This is where the EXPOSURE TRIANGLE comes into effect. It also includes anything else that you can do to make the image brighter and this includes 5)software tweaks as well , 6) image processing and 7)firmwre updates
