extend the gardening season to grow year-round for local food security, adapting to climate change

the coldframe, that icon of the victorian kitchen garden, is a fine tool not only for extending the gardening season and increasing local food security, not only for adapting to climate change and creating the flourishing future we want to see, but also, embodying the simple yet transformative actions of the relocalising movement.
four-season gardening, increasing local food security, growing your own fresh, nutrient-dense, organic, healthy greens without packaging, towards a zerowaste garden and kitchen, these are all great reasons to build a simple coldframe from reclaimed materials.
i give you the latest in the journal of small work* film series, on adaptation and relocalisation, as illustrated by the coldframe.
this episode also provides another example of the frameworks illustrated in the previous three films, like appropriate technology, downshifting, and pattern language.
if this is the sort of work that appeals to the way you’d like to live, you can get on the appleturnover mailing list to hear when new films, shorts, podcasts, newsletters, interviews, q & a’s and mentorship calls are happening

I watched several of your videos multiple times and very much enjoy them, both for the instructional content and the meditative tranquility of the film. Watching chickens scurry around, the cat lounging in the sun, and hearing the dialog delivered with a calm and reassuring tone creates a kind of peace. Thank you for these films.

When you looped the sawing in the soundtrack... This was my first viewing of your work. I am kind of reverse star-struck by your IG posts and content. I've lived a life that has been high speed survival and have worked broken and never focused on healing, just adapt and improvising making it work rather than fixing... I am here on Vanisle as a new resident over the past 5 years and working towards Canadian citizenship. I am learning about our community thru allowing serendipity to happen and allow connections to occur. I am inspired to create and make better happen and look forward to exploring your past work. Kind and warm regard, Juan!ng & +anya(S P A N)

Aahhhh. It feels right at home. I'm sure it didn't notice before, but now? Well, such a beautiful property was somehow lacking without a coldframe. But now, well, aahhhh: it just feels complete and comfy.

thank you for this video! i love all of the videos you publish, and the recent radio podcasts too. ❤️ your hens, geese, the cat, your place and the whole story you tell are beautiful. i have a cold frame, i used to grow early salads there, but 2 springs now i somehow forgot to use it. i tnink it is probably because of the greenhouse - i grow early spring and late autum greens there. i will use the cold frame again, starting this autumn, thank you for this beautiful reminder! ☀️ 🥰 🌸 i grow some food in my garden and each season i am amazed of how tiny little seeds grow food to eat! ☘️💚

I love these small things at a time approach. I love the music and your soothing voice. So much stress these day's of late, but you make it look "doable" one step at a time. Would you be able to give the dimensions of your cold frame and what angle the windows are installed at? Thank you for your wonderful video. I needed this!

oh, monique, i’m glad to hear it! just what i hope for- empowerment. i shall pull together plans, maybe get on the mailing list eepurl.com/dO0KAz as i’ll share these there or follow along on patreon.com/appleturnover. in the meantime, the nature of reclaimed materials makes more of a recipe: wood cut the width of two or three windows; then experiment with the angle, i had old cedar fencing i pulled down, it worked well at 3 in the front, 5 in the back. more of an angle the further from the equator! thanks for your encouragment, it sustains me x

i think we are heading for a collapse of the sort that will mean it will be extremely hard to safely manage those systems. i think we need to downshift, and quickly. having expressed that opinion, i acknowledge i’m not an expert whatsoever- but you might enjoy listening to the experts that nate hagens from mit interviews on ‘the great simplification’. particularly simon michaux on our material blindness.
