SSDs offer much greater performance and durability than HDDs, but they aren’t invincible. How can you keep track of your SSD’s health to ensure you optimize your SSD lifespan?
Strengths and Weaknesses of SSDs
The NAND cells in your SSD can only be programmed and erased a finite number of times. This number can be affected by several factors. Extremes of temperature are one such factor. Power outages are another: loss of power during a write cycle can be calamitous. Power surges can also be extremely damaging. Surge protectors and uninterruptible power supplies can protect against these power issues, though.
Monitoring Your SSD’s Status
Maintaining and monitoring an SSD is a relatively simple affair. There are tools like wear leveling to prevent cells from burning out too quickly. There is also SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology), a tool built into most modern HDDs and SSDs. Kingston SSDs come with the Kingston SSD Management app ( www.kingston.com/en/support/t... ), which provides all sorts of quality-of-life utilities for your drive integrity and data security concerns. Lastly, we recommend promptly updating your firmware, BIOS, and any essential drivers, to preserve best functionality for your drives.

What you'll want to look for is an over-provisioning feature on the SSD. This feature basically allows you to dedicate more flash storage space towards the read/write blocks. This means swapping between more blocks which results in less damage over time on the SSD. The downside is you lose some storage space.

Never used Kingston SSD's but their RAM has never failed me in all the decades I've been using it. For SSD's I don't use consumer-grade ones, & opt for high-end "professional" enterprise/datacenter-class pricier ones that will last forever for a gamer & home-user.
@bgtubber

We can't tell why this is without objective data. It might be because more people are buying them compared to other brands. A company that sells 10,000,000 drives will have more drives fail than a company that sells 1,000,000 drives for example due to sheer volume alone. Not defending Kingston here, just giving some perspective.

Some drives can wear-level cells used for long term storage by first moving that data other cells and returning the original cell to the pool of free cells. Kingston should think about doing that, since it will dramatically increase the endurance of drives that are nearly full.

Assuming that your pc or phone isn't on blacklist, you have to switch to sleep or standby few times, after you bought your drive. It will reduce heat, and in some cases it will be slower. Playing some computer games will enable secret better functions, your drive memory card will be faster than the factory default.

SSDs will get hot, if you write to them for, perhaps, ½hour or longer without rest. But that is not too bad. If you are doing something that writes to the SSD for hours and hours, without rest, then all the SSD needs is a light breeze to carry away its heat. If you have a fan in your case, and its air flows across the SSD, then your SSD will never get hot.

Will it work the same to not fill the partition to the total size of the drive ? Lets say you have a 500GB windows MBR. The first little bit says 'system reserved' , next partition is the main & has a File letter C: >> you don't have to fill the C: all the way to the end. You can leave as much empty space as you wish. For example you can make the C: partition, only 300GB. Later in time you can make the partition bigger. In this case, in disk management it will say "unused" . Does this unused drive space count towards the advice >> don't fill the drive all the way & delete unnecessary files to free space

You just described , how "overprovisioning" works. Yes, you could just watch out not to fill you SSD to >95% (or >90% for system drive) OR just leave 5% non-partitioned space on it. Samsung Magician suggests between 1 and 10% for overprovisioning, don't know about kingston tools.

Since I bought Samsung the oldest is 3 years old and going strong. Most of them were for Windows and cad applications so not such high load of read/write. I am never buying Kingston again, not even bothered to go for warranty after the first one got replaced and died 8 months later. Time wasted to reinstall everything is dissapointing. All of them started slowly not being recognised at boot requiring few resets to get picked up untill they finally give up. I have become expert in estimating how long remaining before they croke.

Like any other product, a UPS price ranges from $50 to $100,000 or more. There are UPSs that can run a small town. There are basically 3 types of UPSs: 1) Standby 2) Line Interactive 3) On-Line #1 is the cheapest. It is basically a bucket of batteries. The UPS will switch to the batteries of you have a blackout, or if the power drops very low. It will probably offer basic surge suppression. It will allow you to gracefully shut down your computer if you have a blackout, and will keep your computer from crashing if the power goes out for ½ a second. #2 will boost or trim the power, if the power from the utility company is outside of the range it should be in. This level of UPS will probably offer much better surge suppression. It will be much better choice, compared to #1. #3 is the holy grail of clean and reliable power delivery. On this level, the UPS takes the A/C power from your wall, converts it to D/C power, and then converts that D/C power back to A/C power (dual conversion). This means that your computer will never see the power from your utility company. Your computer will always be fed newly generated power from your UPS. To perform the dual conversion, between 5% to 10% of your power will be lost, in order for the UPS to perform the dual conversion. So your electric bill will go up. And the UPS will be slightly noisy, because it needs a fan to keep itself cool while doing the dual conversion. This level of UPS will also offer the highest surge suppression. Large computer companies, such as Microsoft, eBay, Google, etc, use the #3. But they do make ones for personal use. What else is there to consider?: How much power do you need your UPS to produce if it goes to its battery (for example, in a blackout)? If you need only 250 watts, then they will not cost as much as one that can produce 1500 watts or more. Also, how long will you want the UPS to be able to run during a blackout, before its rechargeable batteries are drained? Bigger, longer lasting batteries will cost more. I use a model by APC: BN1500M2 It fits #2's description. Lastly, since a UPS has batteries, you will have to replace the batteries every 4 or 5 years (more often if it has cheap batteries). When you take ownership of your UPS, check the date of the manufacturing of the batteries. If they are older than 6 months, then consider returning it. Batteries go bad over time, regardless of whether or not they are sitting idle or being recharged. Whether replacing a car battery, or a UPS battery, I draw the line at 6 months.

The amount of 120gb Kingston I have failed in my dead disk pile is hilarious. We did but loads of them and the customers did fill them but still a lot of a400 disks.

As far as I understand wear leveling, (completely opposite to what was presented here), is that a block used for a long term storage file, is still shuffled around so that nand cell gets a new file written to it. This effectively averages out all the writers evenly against all the nand cells. That’s what wear leveling is, not what was depicted here

Want a bigger tip and the ultimate lifesaver? Clone the system SSD! I keep double SSD system backups on a weekly rotational basis using M.2 NVME drives mounted onto external USB containers. I use a bootable USB flash drive created by Macrium Reflex for each of the PC systems to clone. Cloned SSDs are in the identical format as the system drive by folders and files-not a proprietary image file. My C drives are for system and apps only. File storages are on separate disk drives that also are backed up to other disk drives.

Hello we measure our consumer SSDs on TBW (Total Bytes Written) and our Data Center SSDs on Drives Writes Per Day (DWPD). For more info please visit our website: kings.tn/3c5lASu

@@kingston did not answer "Sudhansu Sekhar Sahu's" question. The answer is infinite. If there is a limit, no one has ever reached it. I challenge Kingston to claim otherwise, and it is bizarre that they dodged your question. "Reads" take no toll on SSDs. And when it comes to "Writes", you can ignore the TBW value, because any drive (without a defect) will be able to write 10x (or more) than the TBW value, with no performance issues. The only issue with the TBW value is that the manufacturer uses it as an excuse to end your warranty when you hit that number (even though the the amount that you used the drive played zero role in the drive failing).
