This video is the extended version of my CBG build video I published back in January which can be seen here: • How To Make A Fretted ... In this video I've removed my own dialogue explaining each step of the build process so you can enjoy just listening to the tools and watching wood being chipped away. #NightHawkInLight

You know what's funny? It seems like every time you want to show us something important (like the screws or the frame), you're silently yelling "look at this. LOOK AT IT!" while gripping said item. I love it.

David Wahlstrom Yeah, but think of the coolness factor. At the start of the guitar lesson, everybody else with "proper" guitars is laughing at your cigar box one, but when the pick-shaking starts, it's your turn to laugh... ;-)

Also allows for installation of piezo pickup, volume pot, and jack, and maybe battery for piezo preamp. If you want to go that route. Love the design of this. Great idea for the tuners.

Cool build 👍👍 Some very interesting concepts. While it great to have something pre built all fancy, if you look at the heritage of these instruments, the originals were made out of what people could scrounge 😀
@noonansean1979
@noonansean1979 8 лет назад
I think you have some really inventive ideas that solve a lot of problems when thinking about the construction of something like this, but there are some considerations you might want to think about which though might make it more difficult to construct would improve the sound of the instrument. The sound generates from the soundboard vibrating, which in your case is really just the neck and perhaps part of the cigar box. I'd suggest try making the portion of the neck that runs along the cigar box much thinner. It'll be able to vibrate more easily. The thickness of the neck makes dampens the sound by not allowing for much vibration. If you notice acoustic guitars don't pull the neck all the way to the bridge. They stop at the body for this reason. That of course makes it hard to have a solid bridge which can handle the tension of the strings and not make the instrument collapse on itself. So for guitars they add bracing, which also helps to control the type of sound. Different bracing patterns underneath the soundboard create different effects. Dulcimers on the other hand just place a neck over a soundboard and run the whole way of the instrument. What's different is that they place they neck on top of the soundboard, and don't cut into it. This way the neck isn't the soundboard, and the box is. The idea is to have the neck be carved in arches so that the neck touches the soundboard in as few places as possible. This allows the soundboard to vibrate more freely and produce more sound. You could perhaps not cut away the box top (soundboard), and instead lay a thin neck over, arched in several places so as to touch in very few spots. This might allow for the box to vibrate a lot more than a very thick wooden neck. This will give a much brighter sound less thuddy less dampened. I'd also suggest tilting your headstock, you really do want a good angle where the strings meet the nut. Your design is really interesting. As engineering it's quite brilliant. For quality of sound I'm not sure it works as well as it could though. It's a really inventive way to do it though and impressive using readily available materials. A good angle on that nut going downward should really improve things, and keep notes in tune so they don't vary when the string is being plucked. Just a few thoughts. Not trying to ding your design at all and I think it's really cool. You've got a good mind for engineering things.

Idk if I'm missing something here, but why are you making things harder for yourself by doing everything with a chisel rather than sawing off some material? It's faster and the blocks you saw off might be repurposed somewhere rather than ending up with a pile of useless shavings that you need to clean up. The ingenuity with the metal work was amazing tho ❤️

......so there's a thing called a cigar box guitar. Looks like having only three strings is part of the identity . I was judging that three strings is engineeringly appropriate for the strength of the timber used so that the neck won't warp under strain. Yesterday by chance I came across a video by Robert Murray Smith, eight years old , he makes a tuning head for a ukelaly using aluminum cooling fins and modified wingnut bolts. Its an out of the blue video cos these days his channel is focused on homemade batteries , chemistry , homemade supercapacitors ....

I find it hard to play mine. Of course that could be from the slice out of my arm taken out by the chisel, or when the string twanged off the nail thingy at the bridge end and took out my eye. Of course you don’t need eyes to play CBG but I think that’s why I sliced my other hand on some of the nails(sorry- frets) while attempting to play. Still, “no pain- no gain”.

How many strings could you get on this? I've seen cigar box ukuleles and even a six stringed model, but it used a premade neck from a Gibson. Would I be right in saying 6 strings would have too much tension for this design, or is it just a case of making a wider neck?

It's a real pain to see how this man goes to work. You can see he's a simple hobbyist 'cause he doesn't even know how to handle a hammer and he uses tools wich a professional wouldn't even take in their mind to use for that purpose. Even without machinery there's a big number of low budget tools witch are alot more suitable. And gets the job done much sooner.

Nice job dude i'm Really surpsised of the sound qualities as a guitar player of course ! But i was wondering why you don't "profile " the neck maybe it will be more confortable and do you think a nut on the "headstock " would be fine ? Cause i'm thinking to make a kind of guitar wich will be i hope as easy to play as a normal one ! And again good work !
@Nighthawkinlight
@Nighthawkinlight 9 лет назад
Jexxy Rawx I didn't profile the neck because it would have been an unnecessary complication to add to the tutorial. I made it as simple as possible. You can only use a nut on the headstock if you angle the headstock back so the strings get proper tension.

Hi, I'm a huge fan of your projects. Some of my favorites include creating hydrogen with aluminum and hcl and the pasta rocket engine. I have actually attempted both and was amazed by how well they worked. The design of the apparatus used for making hydrogen is very simple yet effective and so it made me think, would it be possible to use with other chemical reactions? After thinking for a bit I remembered your pasta rocket engines and realized that the hydrogen generator could be used to make large amounts of O2 as well with some small adjustments (like using manganese dioxide from batteries as a catalyst for decomposition instead of yeast). I was hoping you could try this and maybe let me know how it goes. Ps: If you do actually attempt it, it might be fun to use some math and predict the oxygen yield beforehand using the volume and concentration
