Interesting, its the same weird... farting noise, for lack of a better term What is it thats creating all those tiny BRRRRRBBBB sounds. Sonicbooms? no, that doesnt fit the KABOOMs later on...

I'm not much of a NASCAR fan, but the first lap of the Daytona 500 is really something to see and hear. Right on the level with rockets and funny cars.

Stand between them, it shakes your eyes out after burning them and your sinuses! After a couple pairs you learn when its ok to breathe.

Where I lived in the early 80s a sonic boom could be heard every now and then. Sometimes the windows were shaking. I lived about 12 km from a military airport and it was an incredible noise when the fighters were starting with afterburners engaged. For us kids who loved airplanes it was music.

I grew up between Salina and Junction City, Kansas in the 7/80s. We didnt have internet, but we had fighter jets practicing aerial maneuvers and screaming by at Mach1+, we had B1 bombers doing touch & goes next to our peewee baseball field on the old air base, we had tankers refueling just about anything right above us. Sometimes they were popping the sound barrier so much during the week, that the teachers would take us outside to watch...we weren't getting anything else done, anyway. We learned that if we heard the fighter and he didnt turn around, he was already gone. The sound they make as they shred through the air still makes the hair stand up on my neck. They used to fly LOW... Fort Riley was a few miles away, so we got to watch A-10s and all sorts of helicopters practice too. Imagine being a 15 year old kid and seeing 6 Apaches for the first time, flying in formation.

Jorge Rojas same here! Destin, I don’t know what happened but the sound in the Smart Traveller video is much clearer than in the Smarter Every Day version. I could actually hear the five booms here, it not in SED.

I have 1100 watts of power going to two 12" car audio subwoofers directly behind my chair in my living room along with an array of JBL speakers to play the mid and high range tones. I cranked it up loud and clear until the pans vibrated in the kitchen and the high pitch crackles strummed my eardrums. I thank you for posting your comment because you made me realize that I should move past just the headphones and shake the room with noise just as it would in person. Thank you

I watched this with high quality studio headphones, but ALSO played it out at equal loudness on my studio speakers. It allows you to get the 3d/binaural effect, but also FEEL the sound in your body. Its a visceral feeling.

There's a thing called the "Woojer" made for gaming, similar to rumble pak and whatever has been put into gaming controllers, they make woojers as chest straps to convey the vibrations

Oh you should try to visit if you can! Get to see all of Falcon's predecessors too! They've got a Saturn V laid out in one of the hangars for example.

The car gets out of the shop in a week or so and it will need a break in road trip and we may just have a destination.

I don't have any idea why the Falcon Heavy launch had such an emotional response from me also but I totally cried as well. Then again at the simultaneous landing and then again at the same points watching this. Those engines at launch is absolutely the most incredible thing I have ever heard.

Same thing with fighter jet recordings. You really can't feel the concussion coming off of the engine with a sound system, you actually have to be there since its a full body experience.

To preserve the true sound, you need extremely high quality recording instruments. We are talking about an entire studio dedicated for this. A photographer bringing in recording equipment can't achieve something like this. There are recordings of cannons firing that can shake your soul, but to listen to that, you need high-fidelity speakers and amplifiers. In addition a good recording and the track needs to be formatted properly and not some crappy Mp3. At such level, even what type of wires you use can affect the sound quality. Biaural is just the tip of the iceberg if you want to listen to quality sound. Once you get in to it, it's hard to listen to anything else. Not even sarcasm. If you got a good enough set up, you can hear even the most minute of details and vibrations of instruments. The sound doesn't even appear to be from the speakers, but rather behind it or in between them. That will be the closest you get to being there in person.

You can't duplicate chest-pounding sounds with a computer speaker! Unless, of course, you add very powerful amplifiers. Kilowatts?

turgsh01 they were there for hours. The launch was suppose to be around 1 ish so they had to be there 30 min before at least but the launch was at 5 so they were up there for a while.

I’m no engineer, but I’d also like to understand what exactly is causing the three sonic booms from each booster. That was really impressive.

I read somewhere the boosters do three re-entry burns just before landing due to the booster design, so that would explain the three booms.The boosters are coming in at supersonic speeds right up until shortly before landing.

I may be wrong but sonic booms are caused by the build up of air pressure at supersonic speeds so basically there is a high pressure forming at the legs making a sonic boom while travelling above the sound barrier, the grid fins have a high pressure wave forming in front and the engines have a third high pressure wave in front of them.

taiken5968 no, I mean, get some digital representation of how air pressure moves sound through the molecular makeup that is air and follow it from point of origin to the listeners ears. Explaining it with words is lame. That would be like explaining things with words and not using high speed cameras.
