Great tips. I recently ran into this a few months ago. Peel stop is an excellent product which after you explain to your client why you want to use it they are completely on board with additional cost of having to apply it.

I use Peel Stop in situations where the paint is cracking ("alligatoring") but not actually peeling. It can't really be scraped because it's not peeling up, but the cracking will come through again eventually. Peel Stop forms a flexible barrier and helps prevent the cracking from coming through. If paint is actually peeling, then yes, you need to scrape it before priming. Thanks for commenting and good luck with your painting!

Hello! Love the videos they are extremely helpful. I need to paint my house but it's concrete block, is the process quite similar in terms of the steps? I would assume the types of primer and paint would be different but is there anything else? Thanks so much! :)

Do you ever do solid color stain? I just built a picket fence around my front yard, and I'm trying to decide between paint and solid color stain. Any thoughts? Thanks.

“Areas that have peel stop need to be primed” ive heard this but the zinnser brand peel stop i have (its 3x thick) says its a primer .. maybe the old peel stop didnt also include the primer ???
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 11 лет назад
Hi--You could use a sprayer rather than a brush/roller to apply the primer. For me it depends on how much area I need to prime, along with a couple other factors. Using a sprayer to prime would require you to fully mask the windows etc. before priming (might be inconvenient if you won't be painting for a while yet), and also you would need to run oil primer through your sprayer, which requires cleaning it with solvent before switching to latex paint. Good comment, though--thanks!

Looking to paint an old garage with warn out paint and rather dried wood. Which leads to my question, because my paint/wood is dry, should I just use a water based primer or use an oil based due to the warn condition of the wood?

Question: why didn't you scrap the peeling paint off and instead used Peel Stop? Thank you.
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 11 лет назад
In my opinion sanding the alligatoring areas isn't going to do much good. If any paint is peeling enough to be scraped off, do it, but if it's just cracking and not peeling, I prime it with Peel Stop, then prime it with a regular oil-based exterior primer, then paint it. Two years after I did this job (in the video), no cracking has re-appeared yet. No guarantees but I think the Peel Stop helps form a flexible bridge coat that prevents the cracking from coming through again. Good luck!

@goosecouple

Why use brush, instead of a sprayer, to apply the oil based primer?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 10 лет назад
goosecouple, RU-vid will not let me reply directly to your comment but here is my answer: You can use a sprayer if you have large areas to prime, but this requires running oil primer through your sprayer, which means you need to clean it with thinner and then rinse it with water before using it for latex paint, and for that reason a lot of people do not like to run oil primer through their sprayer. It can certainly be done, though. Thanks.

If the foundation looks bad you can paint it. It needs to be cleaned and/or pressure washed first. Don't paint over dirt! You might want to prime it first, or even use a special masonry paint...kind of depends on the condition of the foundation. Ask the manager at your local paint store what product they recommend for your particular situation.

I noticed that Peel-Stop comes also in a triple thick, building version. Have you ever tried it to smooth out surface irregularities caused by cracking / peeling?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
I never have tried the high-build Peel Stop, but I'd be curious to hear how it works if you use it. Check out the online reviews and talk to the paint store folks before you use it. I know the regular Peel Stop is good stuff, so I would like to think this high- build version is too. One thing I will say about regular Peel Stop is that it is definitely pretty thin material, so this high-build version sounds like it fills a need. If you use it please check back and let me know how it worked. Thanks.

@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 10 лет назад
I like to listen to the radio...sometimes music stations, sometimes talk radio. I find it goes well with painting because it's easy to ignore when you need to concentrate. This is just personal preference though. I'm sure everybody will have a different opinion. But I do find that having SOMETHING to listen to makes a big improvement in my attitude throughout the day.

Hello, I had a question I thought you could possibly answer. I recently started replacing some of the rotted fascia and soffit on my house and started to paint a few sections without priming (I thought the paint I had bought was one of the newer primer and paint combinations that are being sold), but realized halfway through the project that I had made a mistake. My question is, can I apply primer over top of one coat of latex (Valspar Storm Coat), or will that result in an even worse situation. Should I just continue with another coat or two of Valspar Storm Coat, suck it up, and deal with the consequences of not priming some of the sections? I'm not worried about appearance as much as I am the longevity of the paint and the protection from the elements.
@designstudio8013
@designstudio8013 2 года назад
Storm coat is a very good paint and no primer will only mean you will need more paint.

Does the whole house NEED to be primed? I have one section of my home (10ftx10ft) that was replaced and is just bare wood. Do I need to prime just this section if I am going to paint the house the same color? or Do I need to prime the whole house? I'm going to your step 5 video now.

Hi John, i am also a believer in oil primer on exposed wood and of course as a switch-over base prior to painting latex. Trouble is all oil paints have been pulled from the shelves here in Manitoba (Canada) this past fall. Can't even buy oil based stains for decks anymore. I have been struggling to find a replacement product that will adhere properly and still be easy to work with. There are some resin based products but they are difficult to work with especially outside, and they dry far too fast. Any suggestions??
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 10 лет назад
Like you, I've never really found a latex primer that is equal to oil primer, especially in exterior situations...that said, I'd probably go with a KILZ water-based primer just because I think their oil primer is excellent. www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2G97E6/?tag=hotopaahori-20

I'm getting different answers about whether or not I need to use regular primer over the peel stop. Actually I'm using Sherwin Williams Primerx for similar situation to what you show. SW rep says no need to use any primer over the Primerx, just paint, says the Primerx is all the primer that is necessary. Is Peel Stop different from the Primerx in that it doesn't provide some needed function so you have to primer over it before painting? Thanks.

I thought the whole purpose of oil primer was to penetrate into the bare wood. Why oil prime over Peel Stop?
@jlyon2351
@jlyon2351 3 года назад
The peel stop doesn't always stop the tanning in the bare wood. It depends on the color you're using as the topcoat, but if it's white you're safe to at least spot prime.

Why use a oil primer? Oil primers become brittle over time, latex primers remain flexible resisting cracking and checking and alligatoring. Why use an oil primer that probably caused the alligatoring problem in the first place. I use One(1) coat PPG Seal grip tinted to finish color and one(1) coat of finish paint on basically all my exteriors here in ND. The Seal Grip is an amazing product. I use it on all substrates. I know i have peace of mind when using this because it sticks to everything like chaulking and glossy surfaces and it fills in the cracks great too. Its also a great stain blocker. Gives me peace of mind when using this. I don"t need to use a finger test when using this. Never any call backs.

im sure now days they make really good water base primer, and or even good quality paint. but i think if you do either and cover it with paint you should be ok.

Roll smooth flexible Permanent Patch with a short nap roller to the entire surface to keep the splits and cracks bridged. Apply the primer end to end or from corner to corner for a consistent sheen with the top coat. This avoids blotchy reflections. Zinsser Company founded in 1848 makes a dozen different primers exclusively and are the best! Why settle for kilz and other substitutes?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 10 лет назад
Never heard of Permanent Patch but I'll check it out. I totally agree that Zinsser primers are excellent products. In fact, Zinsser makes the Peel Stop that I recommend in the video, and I link to several Zinsser primers on my website. KILZ is a good product too. I try to not "pick sides" if I think products perform equally well.

You cant pass that cheese, gotta scrape off all the loose paint...then might as well sand rough spots, then prime any bare or troubled area then finish coat

If that is heavy duty peelstop you wasted your money. PPG Sealgrip 2 coats wpuld have filled that alligstoring in and made it look like a fresh factory surface. Exceptional tannin blocking capabilities. Thanks for the fingetnail test idea. Latex and vinyl paints are supposed to remain flexible. Wouldnt they still be soft fpr the fingernail test? Thanks
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
I've had good luck with Peel Stop, but there are other products out there, as you note. Regarding the fingernail text, yes, the paint will be soft when you test it, and if you really scrape it hard you can scratch it off. What you are looking for is to see if the paint is actually "pulling" off in strips (like the skin of a boiled plum), or in other words, obviously not adhering to the surface. That's different than scratching it hard until it comes off. It's pretty easy to tell the difference when the paint is just not adhering properly (for example, if it's sitting on top of an old oily coating from some sort of oil-base solid stain or something--I've actually had that happen to me, and without the fingernail test I would have done the whole house and it would have all peeled off).
