Kevin Ross, my guy. I have watched all your videos regarding the M1 MacBook's/Mac mini. you've helped me out big time. thanks to you I got a promotion on my work and some business oppertunities choosing my MacBook Pro 13 inch 16gb RAM and 512gb of storage. You're videos are totally different than from the tech community and just exact the factor that made me buy this machine with a comfortable heart. it came in yesterday by mail, after waiting with a lot of hype for this new machine. I've set it up and Is now 1 day old. I can't tell you enough how happy I am and how grateful I am towards your videos. you're truly amazing. you have earned yourself a new sub and my upmost respect. Thank you Kevin for bringing worth with your video's. Greetings Collin Dunlop
Well Collin, I have to say my friend. I'm not sure what it was exactly that I said, but I'm glad that I was able to be of service in some way. I appreciate your time on the channel, and certainly appreciate your comment. And, whatever the work and business opportunities are, I'm sending my best to those endeavors and wishing you continued success. I look forward to seeing you around the channel and I hope to provide more value that the community can take action on. Until the next video, be well, friend. 🤘👊
Alright friends. Let me know how it's going with your setups. And, as far as that HDR issue where it's toggled on in the OS as well as the Display itself, just keep in mind that this could be a varied experience among displays. This is where you'll need to experiment and correct if you need to as the OS and hardware of the display may be competing with/against each other. Keep rocking faces.
Just an additional update that I've recently reviewed a 4K monitor in the "budget" category, and I have to say I'm really like it so far: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s-BaU7DKpqw.html
Thank you for the video, excellent research! I want to create a two monitors setup, preferably 120hz (144 more likely), with one of the monitors being 4k, or just two of them being 2k and 144hz with hdr, that requires me having two DP monitors, and I cant find thunderbolt hubs that can do that. Because usually it’s an hmdi and a dp, but not like two dp. I mostly do design work, photos, videos as well, so colors are important to me, and the high frequency is important more for a comfort, not games. It’s a research mess for me right now, in other words, as I am planning to work on the yet unreleased macbook pro 16” (M2 or M1X, whatever it will come with). And I would like to “dock” it, have access to all my peripherals, two monitors, and unplug it if I need to. Having to connect multiple cables makes me anxious. Sorry if my comment is a mess, I’ve been thinking about it for a week, making a ton of research on monitors, on docs, on M1 connectivity.. d’uh Maybe you can help me understand if I need to go 4k (more future proof but no high refresh rate). Hdr is also important for future hdr content creation. My budget is $500 for each monitor max (I live in Russia and we have inflated prices, so $500 turns into $1000 equivalent). Maybe someone will help me 😅 Cheers and have a great day to anyone who read this far
You're gonna make it big one day. Great content, just keep putting in the time and people will eventually find you. The M1 info brought me here, and I found myself watching more and more videos because of the high quality videos!
With Jan 2021 Mini MI I can see the apple OS Colored Startup mountains Screen on the LG Nano 2021 vis C to HDMI cable but the Apple settngs show no LG smart or any second screen? and the Smart TV wity magic remote will no accept WI FI PASSWORD- and get on internet SO CANNOT accept the LG conditions and so LG TV is stuck.I have my older 1440p on the mini M1 HDMI and it wors like regular. If I disconnect the HDMI cable the silly LG comes alive as a monitor and works via Mouse & keyboard- slow response. How can I get the LG to behave like a smart Tv and as a simultaneous 2nd screen. Also when the LG is alone and working, because I unplugged HDMI to Acer monitor, The LG screen has no top TAB apple access, Apple File Edit View History Bookmarks Window Help are all gone. Help?
I went to VIEW tab and it offered LG screen and now ihave it aplit in two screens and can drag stuff to the LG screen, Mouse really has to move acros desk and I want text bigger on the 50". Clear enough but it is 43" away to center and 57" to top right which is also almost 6' off floor. Okay fiddling. Well Command (Apple) + made the text bigger, one issue solved. The otherAcer monitor has the Top Controls bar still. Also cannot get thehLG to be on net alone or hear the speakers???? vs the ones on speaker jack from mini.
FANTASTIC!! - Been researching monitors all afternoon and you have been helping me tremendously replying to my comment (on another video) -- I just truly wanted to Thank you. Subscriber for Life and a Big Time Fan -- Thank you
Sure thing. And as far as the television, from the other comment, that text will be pretty blurry. For the price, and wanting some reasonable nits, and the aspect ratio, let me think for a sec because I don’t have a slam dunk option that I’m thinking about. Dell makes some really nice ultrawides, and that might be a direction. I have to find the model number because there’s one that many have often stated that it worked with their Macs. Let me dive in on that.
I just got my mac mini m1 8gb yesterday and I'm using a Dell 27in 4K monitor. The ghosting is really bad. Been troubleshooting this non-stop and can't seem to find a fix. Do you guys have a similar issue?
If Apple pulled their heads out of their arses and actually gave users a decent amount of ports, instead of letting twatty Jonny Ive focus more on slimness, non of this would be an issue.
Excellent video! I am having problems with my MacBook Pro m1. I have a Samsung monitor (Model F24T35) IPS, FHD, 75hz. Connected via HDMI to USB-C 4K cable (Satechi ST-CHDMIM model) The problem is that you see a poor quality image, the letters look pixelated and it tires your eyes. I tested the monitor on my girlfriend's Windows notebook and the monitor really looked great and was easy on the eyes. Could you help me? Thanks a lot!
So, MacOS has been known to treat certain monitors as a TV. Apple used to have font smoothing built into the system preferences, but with Big Sur we lost that easy access. Go to terminal from the applications folder. Open it up and type: defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 1 enables light, 2 is medium and 3 is strong smoothing, so you can replace the number with how much smoothing you want. To disable it you can replace the number with a 0 (zero) You’ll restart your computer after you type the command. Feel free to look it up if you want to double check it before trying it. Just search for font smoothing in Big Sur.
So not having this monitor myself, have been able to dig into the monitor settings a bit more to find a setting that works? Are there an RGB modes in there?
@@KevinRossRN That's right, I was touching the internal settings of the monitor and I was able to make some slight improvements, but the letters are still pixelated and it continues to tire the eyes. It has no RGB modes.
It’ll really depend on the monitor and the cable you’re using. It’s possible, but the limitation is unfortunately due to MacOS, but with certain monitors it can be possible.
@@KevinRossRN I'm on a 4K display. When I scale the ratio to 1920x1080, the fonts are larger but the display loses sharpness. How do I get 4K display with crispy smooth fonts?
I sure wish we had the chef’s kiss emoji. So many times I’ve wanted to use it. I really appreciate your time and I certainly look forward to having you around.
Hey Kevin, great videos!.. I just bought a 32" inch 2k viewsonic monitor and paired it with a MacBook pro m1, the UI and videos are great.. but the text is blurry and crooked. I checked the internet and it was full of complaints. Wonder if you faced the same or if you have any solution for this.
Are there particular complaints on that specific monitor? I haven’t had issues with my viewsonic and I definitely use it all the time for typing up notes. Have you tried to into any of the onboard monitor settings yet?
@@KevinRossRN same complaints with various models and brands.. well i,ve tried to increase sharpness of monitor OSD, and also via terminal commands.. now its much better, but still theres a level of blur and jittery edges one could feel.
I have been having the exact same issue and I saw on the Apple forum that a bunch of people are are complaining about blurry text on an external monitor, no matter how high res their monitor or or what their setting might be on. I have a Samsung G35T Gaming Monitor with 144Hz Refresh Rate - 27 Inch and bought the new MacBook Pro 14” with the M1 Chip, and I’ve tried multiple HDMI and DisplayPort cables, tried testing all the different display settings and my text is so pixelated / blurry. It a massive issue because I’m a UI Designer, I need to design pixel perfect. Please lemme know there is any update or fix for this?
do you know if you can go from Macbook Air M1 to Hub that has HDMI out to a HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter into iMac 2011? I tried plugging everything in but nothing happens. Is there a shortcut key to initialize? Thanks
I’m in the market for a 34-38 inch Ultrawide. I’d mostly be using it for coding on my MacBook Air M1. Would the Dell U3821DW or even the U3421WE be a good choice?
Just discovered your channel, great video thanks! I'm going to be using my 2016 MacBook Pro until I get the M1 Mini later this year, am looking for a monitor ~ I was considering the Dell U2719D for budget reasons, but if the difference is that great I could probably go some extra in my budget; am also considering the Dell Ultrasharp U2720Q; Will be doing photography, video editing, concerned about connectivity and ease of use; what would you recommend? Thanks much!
If you’re going with the Dell, then I’d say on the photography side, if you can swing it, then the 2720Q will likely serve you better. Not to mention it’s USB-C and 4K IPS. Just my two cents.
I have a Macbook Air M1, I just want a basic 4k monitor set up. What would you suggest for a base model hub and TV? Am i better looking for a USB-C compatible monitor or a display port functionality? Keep up the good work I'm not a creator so don't need top spec features 👍🏻
Well for the money, this monitor is hard to beat, and it works great with the M1 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s-BaU7DKpqw.html No that you need to watch another video, but I did test it and I’m using daily.
When i connect an external monitor the text is super pixelated with the Macbook Pro M1 Mini, connected with USB C and DisplayPort. My monitor is 144hz refresh rate. I've tried all the display settings but nothing ig fixing the blurry text. I've seen a bunch of people complain about it. Any ideas on a fix?
Hi there, how fast did the battery life drain for M1 Macbook Air without charging when connected to external monitor? Is there any difference using the USB C Hub vs "USB-C to Display Port cable"? (I tried the USB C Hub with my M1 Mac Air and it drains really quickly compared to my windows laptop.. )
Well do keep in mind that anything you plug into the MBA will want some of that resource, even a hub. I personally go direct when I can and if I have a hub plugged in I just keep it separate from the display. So the MBA is obviously going to be pushing that display and so that takes resource, add a hub to that and then you’re putting a bit more on that battery because the board in that hub is transferring that signal. Now my use case may be different than yours. I’m editing video and photos most of the day and transferring large files along with having about 4 different browsers with 30+ tabs open on each browser, so I’m definitely placing more demands on the system.
All this is blowing over my head!! Can someone please suggest which ultra-wide screen with good display for a MacBook Air m1. And what cables I need for it. Thanks 🙏
thanks for the informative video. I have always like the Mac Mini. I read some people having resolution issues with the M1 Mac Mini and ultra wide (super ultra-wide) monitors. Is that true? I currently have a Dell 49" super ultra-wide monitor whose resolution is 5120x1440. Could the M1 Mac Mini handle that resolution? I heard the previous models could but you would need to get an eGPU to do that.
If the MacBook Air can drive a 55” 4K television, then an ultra wide for the mini should work, however there may be issues with the cables. It’s possible. Using a passive USB-C cable vs using an active one. Also, a monitor should come with a high speed HDMI cable if it supports that HDR and higher refresh rate, but this may also be the case that the supplied cable isn’t sufficient. This is a hypothesis of course.
@@KevinRossRN it’s ok, thanks ! We figured it out that it was just one wire...got confused with all the technical words and wire types and etc. from watching this and couple other videos by other youtubers..
Does anyone have issues with volume control? I have an external monitor connected to my Mac mini M1 but I can't control the volume of the external monitor.
To your last point it’s about the Gbps, you’ll want HDMI 2.0/1. Or go with a *display port 1.4* connection! A display port 1.4 connection will be better than HDMI, 100% of the time, due to higher data rates...
I have the M1 MacBook Air I've been using the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adaptor and using a High speed HDMi cable I get 60fps are Full 4k Resolution of my monitor however I get a Weird Flickering issue. Has anyone else encountered this and if so has anyone been able to fix it?
If you have an external keyboard or mouse it’ll help with this process. You can either shut down the Mac first or connect the external display to the Mac (and keyboard and mouse), but either way you’ll want to reboot the Mac with the external display connected. Once you turn the Mac back on just close the lid and the external display becomes your primary display. You can also go into display settings to ensure that you want this display to be the main, and you can even toggle on to mirror displays. Then, if you open the lid of the Mac it should still display the screen just fine on the external.
Hi Kevin, a couple of months ago I swapped out my 2017 5k imac in preference for the 13 inch MBP M1 for better speed of photo and video editing. I had a 5k LG 27inch monitor (sold by Apple) connected through the thunderbolt connection. Working with it though didnt seem to be any quicker than the Imac. A couple of Sunday's ago I uncoupled the MBP from my desk and worked with it on my lap and wow it was super fast. I did lots of tests and the thing that kept coming up as the result was that the 5k monitor seemed to strangling / throttling back the capability of the MBP. I coupled it to an LG 4k 24 inch monitor and it worked a lot quicker. Luckily Apple took the 5k monitor back and gave a full refund. Have you had any experience of a monitor slowing an M1 MBP down and if so is there a work around? Both the 24 and 27 inch monitors were connected via TB3 - best wishes Nick
Hey Nick. That is definitely the first I’ve heard about it here. What I will say is that I’ve definitely talked to quite a few folks that have been cruising along, while a small handful have had the typical “monitor” issues. However I did see some threads a while back about this monitor slowing down MBPs ...this was even before the M1. I’d have to dig deeper on this specific issue as some were complaining about the particular chip (Intel) being underpowered, while others reset the VRAM. But what I will say is that my MBA runs the same whether on a monitor or not. This seems isolated to this particular monitor. I suppose you wouldn’t have another monitor lying around to test?
Hi Kevin, i have the 24 inch LG 4k (the 27inch 5k's smaller brother) and the 13 inch M1 MPB works much better on that. I will say though that in all my trials and testing of the 27 inch and the 24 inch and just the laptop, it did seem to be quickest when nothing else was plugged in. Ive looked on forums and others seem to be having slowing down issues with some monitors. The 24 inch monitor is very sharp so perhaps i'll stick with this for now. I was on the phone for a good couple of hours with the tech team from apple and eventually they agreed that it was the 5k 27 inch LG that was the culprit. I was gutted as this monitor is amazing.
I feel you on feeling gutted about that monitor my friend. It’s really hard to find a display that is comparable to the iMac. I’m glad you were able to get the return. As I mentioned in another video, the Thunderbolt controller/retimer in the M1and what seems to be helping some workflows is a powered hub, but no guarantee that this would help with this particular display. Not to mention as great as these machines are, needing a hub shouldn’t be the solution. I’m hoping the engineers are taking notes here because I’ve come across a few forums where users are at least reporting these issues and I can’t imagine this is only (if it all) software related, but rather the power output on these chips. Heartbreaking on that display though.
Kevin! Bought that ViewSonic VP3481 Monitor back in December after watching a couple videos of you talking about it. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. Getting 60Hz refresh rate on my current mac all day. Amazing.
I know right? You might want to check out TikTok for those quick videos because context and learning something might not be as much of a focus as it is here. I love TikTok by the way 😉 Hope the day gets better for you 🤙
Hey kevin i have a question bout LG UL500-W 27 inch UHD monitor, is this monitor good for connecting macbook pro and ps5? Please let me know what you think. Thank you!
It’s rated to work with the M1 if that’s what you’re asking. I also reviewed this monitor: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s-BaU7DKpqw.html And it’s in the same price range and I haven’t had a single issue this far.
@@KevinRossRN so LG monitor does work with macbook pro right? With that do you think it will work with ps5 too if you knowledge bout that? I reviewed your video and i like that monitor now if this works better with macbook pro and for gaming like ps5 do u think this one worth more to buy?
In the description, could you please name also the exact monitor models and not just only "34" Ultrawide Option from LG". The link do not work anymore, and amazon is suggesting other models or sponsored links => I am not sure, which model you are refering to!
Actually, apologies. I just linked the Viewsonic…let me see if I can find the details on the LG because it seems they’re always the one changing up their model numbers.
Can I connect Mac mini M1 to Dell S2721HN monitor using usb-c to Hdmi cable? There are only 2 hdmi ports in this monitor and no other port. Please help
Ah, gotcha. There are so many monitors to keep up with, it can certainly be challenging. Wasn’t aware of that particular issue. I know Dell makes some great displays, but I also know that they don’t really test their monitors on Mac…they’ve even admitted this.
Sir, Connecting a USB C - HDMI 2.0 4k 60Hz cable from Mac to TV .. did that connect with 60Hz or 30 Hz, say TV is just a 4k LED TV not a HDR TV. Thanks :) & Nice video :)
Thanks my man. Yes, interesting findings indeed. I have to continue to test with gaming settings just to see what that looks like. I’m in a rabbit hole of testing, it seems 😀
@@KevinRossRN Haha yeah man, funny thing is I tried all the picture profiles on my monitor before but just kept it in on the factory default. Now watching your video I decided to switch it to HDR. 😂😁👍
Yeah, it really comes down to experimentation. I was finding that the HDR setting in the monitor was the closest to how the colors showed up on my RU-vid videos. It’s going to vary for everyone, but if folks are willing to spend a little time testing, they’ll definitely learn their monitor, but then it gets quicker every time they need to make a change. I have a different setting for editing photos. 🤷♂️
Yeah, I tend to watch my video (before posting) on my screen, an Android device and then iPhone. Let’s just say they all have their own “look” which makes it very interesting for editing. I just rely more on my scopes, but still like to check it on those devices before publish.
I’ve found that USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to DisplayPort to be the best. If you need a hub because you need more connectivity, then I’d run a USB-C out of that if possible.
Yeah a hub is typically “sipping” more power as the Thunderbolt port needs to supply power to that hub. However it sounds like you’re using the hub unplugged. I assume?
Hey man, I know you are amazing at helping us in the comments, so I'm glad I found this video of yours. I'm running a crg9 and it seems like the quality is not the best using a Cable Matters USB C to Displayport adapter. Running at 5120x1440 120hz. Colors look washed out, text looks a bit pixelated. I'm running the 16" 2021 MBP with M1 Pro
If I connect my MacBook Air m1 to a 4K display via USB-c will I get the 60hz display while still using MacBook screen along with the 4K display. Thanks
Yes. As long as your refresh rate is 60Hz on the monitor. The MBA can actually push a higher refresh rate if the monitor is capable. I’ve tested it on a gaming monitor.
I have a problem. I have an ultra wide monitor and when using the scaled (yes I am pressing options too) the max resolution is much lower than I need and it just looks so blurry. I am connecting it via HDMI 2.0 from a thunderbolt adapter?
@@KevinRossRN Do you think that could be the problem? I could buy a USB TO display port. I am really not that clued up on cables but if purchasing a better display port would that allow me to increase the screen resolution on my MacBook? as my MacBook Air is suppose to allow much higher resolution. Thanks mate
Sometimes, especially with the Air. MacOS unfortunately isn’t great with some monitors. I don’t have all the specifics of each monitor because there are so many, but definitely a handful. It’s just the way MacOS “communicates” with these monitors. Anyway, my ultrawide is best with USB-C from the MBA or Display Port. Personally speaking that is.
guys i have a real stupid question to make, considering that i've got a mac mini m1: if i'll buy a monitor with usb-c connection and i'll connect it to my mac mini, i have to use also the power supply cable for the monitor or not? i mean, the monitor will also run without the power supply and only with the usb-c? thank you in advance, i'll be here and wait your answers
It’s okay to ask. Yes, you will need the power supply for the monitor. The mini isn’t powering the display. However, if you have a USB-C display, depending on the setup, you can power a hub through that display. So if you wanted to connect a USB hub that has more ports or SD card reader, then you can save some of the ports on the back of the mini.
Happy to help. And just as a side note, that if you use USB-C from the monitor to a MacBook, the monitor will usually charge the MacBook. Just in case you ever need that functionality. Best of luck
Wondering if you know of a way to connect an old 23" Apple Cinema Display (dvi version) to a new 2021 MacBookPro with Thunderbolt 4? I still love the old matte displays and it would be great to be able to keep using this monitor with my new MacBookPro if I could! Thanks for any input!
I have an adapter like this one for an older display. amzn.to/3CYn8Wj I don’t have the Apple Cinema Display, but it is a monitor with DVI. I believe you can also get one that connects via HDMI
I prefer a Monitor with highest PPI I can afford......As I like crisp text at the higher resolutions...Which usually is the native it was designed for..Why I like IPS monitors. The have faster response times. Not so sure about color correction weirdness going on. On some of them... But being new to Macs. I find the refresh rate locking disappointing...As it does not matter if the monitor supports 144hz...
Most definitely. I’m working on procuring some additional displays for these new machines to see what that’s like on these, especially since it will push more than just one. But I know MacOS still mucks up things with these displays sometimes.
Hey Kevin. Have you experienced the issue where volume controls on an external monitor (I have a Dell Ultrawide U3412WE) are disabled by Apple (I’m trying to connect a mbp 13” m1, my kids chrome book and pc laptop work seamlessly)? I see some chatter online but the apps people are suggesting have retired or are rather homebrew in presentation. I’ve read it’s a driver issue but Apple says it a Dell issue and Dell, well, you probably know the rest of this song. Any insight you have would be so appreciated.
Yeah, it’s an Apple issue. It has been. I’ve got internal speakers as well, but just never use them because they sound awful. There are some home brewed apps as you’ve mentioned. Did you happen to look at EqMac? I used to use Soundflower in my other machines. The decent workarounds are really hardware based, honestly. The community has submitted reports to Apple on this issue and although some have gotten it to work on their Intel Mac, it has been an issue off and on for quite some time, regardless of what cable you’re connecting with unless you use the headphone out to an input on the monitor, but again, that’s still not a great solution either. I wish I had a better answer that offers an easy solution.
How did you get 3440 x 1440 on your monitor with HDMI? I can't get that resolution plus there's no audio control on the Mac. So, you'll have to adjust volume control on the monitor itself each time you want to change the volume level. I tried USB C to Display as well. With this connection I got the 3440 x 1440 but no audio control. Any suggestion how to solve this issue?
For the resolution on the HDMI, which cable are you using? Meaning is it capable of carrying high speed throughout? As far as the monitor audio, that is definitely a Mac issue (for awhile) there is a workaround. I need to find it. I personally don’t use my speaker monitors because they are just terrible...Which I know most monitor speakers are. Not all, but most I’ve worked with. Let me see if I can find that workaround.
You should be fine with either the USB-C to DisplayPort or USB-C to HDMI. I personally prefer the DisplayPort option, but that’s just me. I do use HDMI as well, but I just color calibrate for video editing. Every monitor has its hang ups, but just make tweaks where you need to within the monitor on screen display settings.
If I connect a monitor using USB-C will it also transfer data to any USB ports on the monitor. I would think so but wanted to check. I can then connect any external USB devices to the screen and just have one cable to the MacBook Air M1. Cheers
That's how my monitor is set up. So USB-C into the TB3 port, then I have a hub connected into the back of the monitor where I have my SD card reader and my audio interface, so typically, yes that should be the case when connected via USB-C.
thanks for this. looking for an external monitor for my 2020 m1 pro and wasnt sure what kind of display to get for color accuracy for photo editing and video color correcting and this helped
It’s actually a USB-C cable if you have that option with the monitor you choose. It’ll either be the one that comes with the monitor, or I’m actually using this one on my 14 inch MBP: amzn.to/31vn2sf Otherwise if you don’t have USB-C to USB-C then the usb- c to display port is this one: amzn.to/3Dl9iNK
Hi Kevin, I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Air M1 and a 4K 60Hz HDR monitor. My question is, will that combination work? Will I get 4K@60hz and HDR on the monitor? If so, what cable is required? Does the monitor need to have thunderbolt 3 input or would a usb-c to DisplayPort cable do the the job? Hope that makes sense, thanks! Love the videos btw!
As long as the monitor has 60Hz, then you should be just fine as long as the cable your using is fast enough. There are some linked below. The MBA can also push at a higher refresh rate on a 1080p monitor. I actually did a test and video on that. USB-C to DisplayPort would be my next in line recommendation if you don’t have a USB-C compatible monitor. Double check that the monitor plays well with a Mac. There are some linked below, but when you settle on one just double check because every monitor has its hang ups.
I haven’t personally, but this is also monitor dependent. I know a small handful here that had an issue with their monitor, which I don’t have a running list of each monitor that this an issue with. Is there a particular monitor you’re referring to?
@@KevinRossRN It isn't an issue with the monitors itself. It's how MacOS rends texts plus treats non-retina ie non-4k displays . Starting Mojave, they basically removed antialiasing for text which has caused issues with text looking blurry combined with no HiDPI rendering.
No, I hear what you’re saying and I definitely should have included that in my reply as I’ve had other convos here in the comments on MacOS specifically. As far as monitors are concerned it seems that there are specific monitors are “better” at dealing with this issue over others. I’ve tested several of the same brands, BenQ being one of them, where they would all provide a pretty stellar viewing experience on MacOS. Whereas there are a couple of Dell monitors, which I think are also great, but that have that issue where text is pixelated/blurry, but the RGB/Color rendering can be stunning. And Dell flat out says that they are not testing these on Macs at all. Whether that’s true or not from the R&D perspective, but there have been customer service responses on some of their ultrawides that state these are only tested on Windows 🤷♂️ But again, you are correct and this is something that we all have to be mindful of is that some of these monitors are able to deliver the same quality and functionality on either hardware, because there’s also others that have stated a superior experience on their PCs while a very subpar one on their Mac with the same monitor. I’m hoping with this next iteration of MacOS that we’ll start to get some of this functionality back because with the GPU, and the communication protocol for displays all occurring within an Apple SoC, they could actually make this better. This is also just one of those things where Apple is forcing app development to utilize metal as well as pressuring other hardware manufacturers to develop a line specific for Mac hardware. Display companies are already doing this, but unfortunately it’s also not clear to the consumer.
You mention getting quality cables and I wish I had known that a few years ago. This is probably the most overlooked advice. I always thought a cable was a cable but they aren’t. You can’t get good quality without a good quality cable. I bought a 4K TV and an Apple TV 4K and hooked it up with a 10 year old HDMI dollar store cable. Cringing yet?
I use a powered hub these days: amzn.to/3zsiUFH However a bus powered hub that can offer that 60Hz is another one from Anker: amzn.to/3iIypmS I do still use the HooToo on the back of my monitor as an additional hub.
@@KevinRossRN the USB C cable which came with the MBP M1 for power supply. The monitor is charging the Mac, but there's no video signal. Today I ordered the USB C to DP, let's wee what we'll get.
I’m going to be running some tests with the new MBP comes in, but for right now, per what I know, the LG ultra fine displays (5K and 4K) as well as Apple’s own display. However I’m going to be looking into and researching other options. Sometimes a monitor may try to respond to the True Tone functionality built into the Mac, but it’s not always accurate.
That’s awesome. I did an update and tested this on a gaming monitor as well and was pleasantly surprised at the results. Glad to hear it’s working out for you. 🤘
@@KevinRossRN yeah. I mean it's kind of expected based on bandwith up to 2K. It's just you didn't mention you meant 4K. So I was just not sure why 60Hz was a big deal here.
FYI, I was trying to get my Macbook Pro May 2020 to display at native resolution on my external monitor Acer XR382CQK (3840x1600 @ 75 Hz.) via USB C-USB C cable. It was not initially working and was staying consistent at native resolution but locked at 30 Hz. The work around that the manual of my monitor indicated that in order to get full monitor resolution of the DP ALT port, you need to turn off USB 3.0 capabilities of the integrated USB 3.0 hub of the monitor so it can only work at 2.0 speeds. What this does, I assume, is that allocates that data bandwidth to the video instead of the data. When doing so, I had to switch the option to off and then press down on the joystick so it could enable it. Once that happened, I went back to my display settings and repeated the stems that Kevin here highlights so you can see the refresh rate and at that point it was no longer grayed out.
Ah ha! Nice share my friend and really glad that this workaround helped. It’s tough because every monitor and workflow requires minor tweaks...at least from my testing. I have a BenQ that required no adaption. Just plugged it in and ready to roll.
Yeah, even though I’ve got the MBA I’m still using the iPad Air right now...so far. I try to keep it as a separate device for one business. That way I can keep the mini and MBA exclusively for creative work. Although I do love editing photos on it.
Very informative and helpful. Thinking of getting a 34inch instead of 27inch 4k, an all around monitor for photo/video editing and maybe some games. Also getiing my first Mac m1 computer, still torned if i should get the MBA or MBP or maybe just the mini.. lol i want a computer to have on my desk aswell as i can take it with me everywhere.
So the MBP would offer some benefit if you’re gaming and really not because of the chipset, because they’re all the same, but for the thermal management for an intensive task.
I have Mac mini m1 and the MacBook Air m1...external monitor connected to the Mac mini, how can I ALSO connect my MacBook Air to the Mac mini to use as a 2nd monitor. I want to color grade (or at least check color) on my Air. Thanks man!
So, not necessarily a “quick and easy” solution. But this article can illuminate some of the limitations. It used to be that we could use target display mode with old iMacs, but these chipsets are requiring a bit more of a workaround that includes a combo of hardware and software. www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/how-connect-two-or-more-external-displays-apple-silicon-m1-mac-3799794/
@@KevinRossRN I actually got it figured out.. but thank you! Using screen share, works like a charm. Not sure why my BenQ is so far off from my MacBook as far as color but at least now I have something as a reference instead of my phone. Maybe you know and can do a video? I know color profiles is a big confusing topic
Yeah, monitors drive me bonkers. I just focus on the scopes and call it a day. But glad you got it to work. That side car and air display/screen share gets a little buggy at times. Sometimes it’ll connect right away while other times it’s not an option. 🤷♂️
@@KevinRossRN gotcha.. yea I need to learn How to read color scopes better.. the exposure is cool but color sucks! My screen share seems to be on point so far.
Awesome that the screen share is working. Glad that part was easy. Heck I’m still working on figuring out scopes. Just practice, but it’s also about the look you want as well. As long as I can get the skin tones dialed in, then I feel comfortable experimenting with the rest of the colors as long as they’re not wildly shifted.
Thanks for the detailed video! I'm having some problem connecting my M1 Macbook Air to my Prism+ W270 Pro monitor. The signal between the two devices keep flickering and nothing shows up on the monitor, is it a compatability issue? Would really appreciate if you could give me some tips!
I have a MacBook air, not the m1 one and got a 34 inch monitor from gigabyte. I think my laptop can’t handle it because it gives me mouse lag, even though I played around with resolutions to make it as minimal as possible. But my issue is, no matter the resolution on the laptop, or monitor, everything on the monitor is stretched too wide, this is most noticeable with images and videos. My yt videos do not have black on the sides to make it match the wide screen, it simply stretches everything out. I don’t know what to do about it or if it is the monitors fault as I tried every possible setting and solution I could find on forums. So I’m thinking of changing my monitor to see if there is any difference. Have you had any of these issues with this one? Or if you have any idea why this could be happening? I connected it through hdmi2 from the monitor to the multiport hub which then goes into the usbc laptop 😊
@@KevinRossRN my macbook air supports 2560x1600 pixels max. But there is no option to set the monitor to that, even after I click the option button when clicking on “scaled”, which shows me other resolutions available. So I have to set my monitors resolution to 2560x1440, and then match my macbook to it. This option also looks the best regarding the quality of the picture on the monitor itself, although as I said it is very stretched out, and the mouse lag still happens every few seconds. I’m really unsure if I bought the incorrect monitor for my macbook as I’m not very tech savvy 😁 and I very much appreciate your help with this!
So in display settings, do you have the option of using as mirrored display, extended display, or main display? Try either extended or main. You should have the option of 3440 x 1440 If you’re having issues then you can also try DISPLAYLINK for MacOS on the Synaptics website. No guarantee, but I’ve heard from others that it has helped with their M1 setups.
Quite informative video. Do you think the Dell S3220DGF 32" curved monitor will work well with mac mini M1? I have two of these monitors I use with a Dell laptop. I was considering upgrading to a mac mini (from 2009 iMac) and using these monitors for both computers. The monitors have 2 x HDMI (2.0) and 1 x DP (1.2) ports. Thanks.
These should work. Sometimes MacOS and Dell Monitors have been hit or miss…I’d have to research these specifically for you on this particular model, but having the DP and HDMI connections is certainly in the right track. Sometimes the aspect ratio gets a little thrown off if there aren’t on screen display controls. I’m not in a spot at the moment to research that particular one.

Thanks for the helpful info! I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro and I can’t for the life of me get the USB-C connection to display and output power from my LG monitor, which is a LG 32UN880-B 32" UltraFine 4K UHD Display. Have you used this monitor before, or do you have advice as to which cable I should use? I’ve tried a Thunderbolt 3 and 4, as well as the included cable with the monitor and nothing seems to work. Beginning to question whether I have a defective USB C port on my MacBook
Now when you say output power, you’re just referring to being able to push a signal to the display, correct? And, do you have another computer to test that the display works?
@@KevinRossRN yes, that’s what I’m referring to. LG markets it as the one cable solution, claiming that it can display and charge your laptop. I just haven’t been able to get it to work and have tried so many cables
@@KevinRossRN HDMI out does work, and that’s what I’ve been using, but I was really hoping the one cable solution thing would’ve been true for my use case
Hi there, does air m1 without fan not get hot when connected to external monitor? if comparing pro and air with using external monitor, does it make any difference? thanks
There will be a very small amount of heat generated when pushing any external monitor, however it’s honestly not that significant where it should impact the performance. What is your primary use?
Hi, I am not able to connect my MacBook air with Lenovo G27c. Whenever I connect with a UBC c hub, the MacBook recognizes the monitor but the screen is blank. With the same hub, I am able to connect MacBook to my television. Can someone help me with this issue??
Which cable are you using and which hub? My next concern would be whether the hub is helping push that signal appropriately to the HDMI cable. Also, when you say it recognizes it, can you change any of the settings in system preferences such as the aspect ratio or refresh rate?
@@KevinRossRN I am using Zeb TA1500UCVP 7.1 usb hub. Brought it in Amazon. With this cable I am able to mirror mac screen on my television, but not on my Lenovo monitor. Yes I am able to change things on my Mac system preferences, refresh rate and all. Only thing is the display is not coming in monitor. This monitor easily connects to my HP laptop only with mac I am facing the issue???
Does Lenovo offer up any software on their site for this monitor? Sometimes there’s software that can be installed that helps control monitor settings via the Mac. I know that Viewsonic and a couple others have some display software.
Yes, I did recommend that in the video. You’d want to utilize a high speed cable for sure because I’ve had folks reach out that couldn’t achieve 60, but they were using a slower cable...but yes, correct on that.
Great video! Would this monitor pair up nicely with the new mini? www.adorama.com/lot27ud88w.html I mainly do photography and some video editing ! Thanks!
Sorry for the delay in reply. Sometimes these comments get buried. Yes, a lot of folks use this monitor with Mac. I think it would work well as a photography (editing) monitor on a budget. Great find.
I’m all for budget options. I think it’s a decent monitor for the price, however I believe their customer service is lacking. Based on what I know from other creatives that is.
Great update! Yeah, not a fan of HDMI at all. I may eventually just "steal" my cinema display back from the wife and give her one of my DEll 27 inch 4k displays! Hopefully, the thunderbolt 2 to TB3 adapter will work! WIll be testing that out on her Air when it arrives.
Hi, Kevin! Very nice video. have the Mac Mini with the M1 2020 chip. I have bought 2 32" QHD 75 Hz Lenovo monitors. The monitor only comes (not received yet) as I see in the reviews with only an HDMI cable. The monitor has 1 DP 1.2 port and 1 HDMI 1.4 port. No idea if the cable that comes with the monitor will work fine with the M! Mac (HDMI to HDMI) and about the other I suppose it must be from Thunderbolt to DP cable. What cable do you recommend? Do you think I will be able to run both at 60Hz? Because 75 Hz is not possible or there is any way to run both at 65Hz? Hope you can guide me a little bit about how to connect them to the Mac M1. Your guide will be very appreciated.
I’ve run two monitors at 60Hz with no problems. For the other monitor, you are correct in either running a USB-C to HDMI or a USB-C to DP cable. I’d try the display port cable to see what you think. The USB-C to DP in the description is the one I still use today.
I see. I just know that it’s on sale in the US (it says 29% off) and that the price is 16.99USD, but and it’s the UNI brand, which I trust with all of my peripherals, but haven’t seen the price in Spain. If you’re concerned about price, did you find a less expensive alternative?
Hi. Great info. I am just a newbie. Just wanted to know something. Will the LG 35WN75C-B - 35” QHD (3440 x 1440) Curved Monitor be compatible with my M1 macbook pro 2020 version
Thanks! This particular monitor seems to have some issues with MacBook Pros, however I haven’t tested it personally. Do you have some other monitors you’re looking to pair up?
@@KevinRossRN i wanted to set up a widescreen monitor with my macbook pro m1. I am still looking for suggestions. Because of so many display issues with m1 when setting up an external display, still waiting. Can you share your latest list of widescreen monitors supported in m1. Thanks in advance
@@KevinRossRN My primary use is mainly web development. Just wanted a compatible widescreen monitor for my Mac M1, so that I can comfortably work with multiple windows rather than switching between them frequently for work like the way I am doing with currently with my 13 inch MBP screen.
More great content ! I followed your advice on the ext SSD. So are you saying that buying a monitor with anything faster than 60hz can’t be used ? I’m mainly into web browsing , productivity , and occasional gorpro editing. Looking for a mid range monitor that is at least QHD, 31.5 or maybee a little bit smaller , able to open 2 x xls side by side and maybee play the odd game (been saying that for years and haven’t ) Also , if it had ports so I didn’t need to buy a hub ? Would love a USB C and A regular USB 3 Any thoughts ?
Thanks! And funny you should as about the refresh rate. I’m literally (not kidding) in the middle of testing a gaming monitor that has a higher refresh rate. I’ve already filmed it and just need to cut it and upload. Short answer, it’s not a 4K display, however it will run at a higher refresh rate. The monitors in the description however are setups that I recommend and monitors that others have purchased and reported back as having a good experience with. But some monitors will go higher on that refresh. It just depends, but minimum you should be getting 60.
Were you able to get the monitor to work with the USB-C to HDMI directly out out of the USB-C port from the Mac-Mini? When I tried the monitor that was connected to the USB-C port was flickering
Just wanted to tell you how much I love all your videos. Also I got a CalDigit TS3 Plus after watching some of your videos and looking at all the products. This is the best thing I ever did for my current 13" Macbook Pro and I look forward to using it on a new M1 Macbook Pro hopefully sometime later this year :-)
That’s awesome you picked up the Caldigit, and really glad it’s working out. I should have a review/update video on these hubs/docks, but not to worry, the Caldigit is still a top pick and one of the best out there. Appreciate having you around here friend.
Just found your videos, really chill vibe you have there 😁 like it a lot! I’m a proud owner of my M1 Mac Mini, currently using my old trusty Dell U2515H (1440p, 60hz) monitor. I’m considering switching to an ultra wide monitor, but it looks like M1 Mac Mini’s don’t really have the option to support higher refresh rates than 60hz at resolutions like 3440x1440.. If I’m not mistaken, your monitor supports 100hz but can you confirm that refresh rate is capped at 60? I would love to use an ultra wide on something like 75 or 100hz but if 60hz is the M1’s Mac then I would rather get a single 4K display for more real estate 😊
Yeah, 60Hz is where it lands. If the M1 (when) supports EGPUs then we could see that get bumped. For editing video, I’m fine with 60 (personally) and as far as gaming is concerned, which I do very little of, I’m also fine with it because if I were really into it then a Windows machine is where I’d be...but yes, so far in all my testing it’s 60.
Based on some new research that I’m finding, I feel that the adapter could potentially be the bottleneck, and this seems to be how the controller (the retimer) is working on that thunderbolt port and communicating to the chip. It’s really nerdy and I’ll go into it in my upcoming video on the Thunderbolt port and that protocol. But, pivoting back over to HDMI, have you tested a 4K cable HDMI cable? Something with at least 18Gbps, or are you saying that you aren’t able to get one where you are?
Thanks Kevin, its really helping. I would like to put a question, tha I cant find answer anywhere. Can I use MacbookAir (I3) as a second monitor for mac mini (m1). I am able to share my mac mini display on macbook air. But I cant find solution to use Macbook Air as a second display :)
I believe duet display has a feee trial, but yeah it’ll either take a third-party app or hardware to make it happen. Unfortunately using a MacBook as a secondary display natively isn’t very easy. Not like an iPad or one of those inexpensive mobile displays. Screen recycler used to work, but it’s out of development. But I believe duet is still being developed.
I couldn’t get it to work on my much older (2009) iMac, which I was just trying to test, however with your setup you should be able to via a TB3 to TB2 (or display port) via target display.
