Interesting review video, K.R. I'm struggling on which microphone I should get: Samson Q9U, Shure MV7 or Maono PD400X. Are you still using the mic in 2024 & what's the name of your XLR cable?
If I could take a photo of my desk today, you’d still see this mic. I love it. I tend to use it with an audio interface rather than a direct plug in. It looks like the cable is still in stock…from GLS Audio: amzn.to/4ehnsmk The Shure MV7X is also a really great option.
@@KevinRossRN Sweet! There are so many great microphones out on the market. Choosing one is the most difficult of them all. I've been looking at Samson Q9U for three years. I'll continue to look while watching your videos (with Samson Q9U) to get some ideas. As for audio interface, I got Focusrite Vocaster One two months ago. But, haven't use it yet for watching the videos before install it. One more question, do you have Samson HighRise (microphone preamp device)? Thank you for responding to my question, K.R.
@RetroBigCat75 I actually have the Coda MB Stealth: amzn.to/3Bsj6Kr Love this thing as well because it’s in-line and it doesn’t actually look too bad. I do really like the mics that are XLR and have USB. I don’t think you’re going to go wrong with Samson, Rode, or Shure.
@@KevinRossRNOnce again, thank you for the information & response. I'll keep my eyes open for the Coda preamp stick as well. Plus, watching & listening to the sound have little to zero background noise.
@RetroBigCat75 yeah, when you can lift that signal a bit without having to crank the volume, it really helps. I didn’t realize that until years later of producing audio content. Sending my best on your journey 🤘
this was a great tutorial! I was wondering if you can move already installed applications to the ssd to be ran by windows? Or does everything to be used need to be downloaded from the windows system? Thank you !!
Some things can be moved in their entirety. You may occasionally run into an issue where there’s an app that has something stuck in a random library somewhere. To make it a cleaner install it would be helpful to download it within that system…if/when you can.
@@KevinRossRNthank you for the quick response ! I have another question 🥲 when downloading windows 11 on the insider program, there are three options (dev, beta and canary). Which do you recommend ? Thank you again!!
It depends on how adventurous you are. If I were running a machine where I’m doing a lot of testing and I’m not concerned about using it for something where I need a lot of stability (say, for work) then I’d go dev or canary. Beta is going to be the more stable option.

@@KevinRossRN kinda in my region, refurbished 16gb m1 with above 84. percent battery health and new m2 both 256 gb, which would be a better buy? disclaimer i am not a pro user but i do some casual edits like color gradung footage from my iphone 12, which doesnt shoot pro res badic 4k edits from my phone, and i also do not multi task, sometimes i will play a youtube video in my lecture and highlight on 2 or 3 pdfs, and i am learning da vinci not a pro user nor have i ever used fusion
I would usually say to go for that extra memory and the M1 vs M2 isn’t too noticeable, but if the price is the same, and you’re saying that the battery health is around 84% then I’d change my thought here and advise on the base M2. You may find that over time as you start to use the machine with Resolve, maybe having a couple of other programs and browser tabs open that there may be a few hang ups here and there, which just happens over time and you may just have to close and restart that browser or other apps, but you should be just fine on that base as a start.
@@KevinRossRN usually i dont do that when i am using an app i will solely use that app, i have an old macbook pro 2012 that i am currently using doesnt stutter for my work flow, i also occasionally do edit videos from my iphone 12 on the 2012 macbook and it does the job, ya battery percentage was very confusing so i thought i should ask an expert whats their view on this matter, thank you
I would take the iPhone out of the equation for recording. I’d go with a handheld recorder: geni.us/PodTrak4 You’d record into this device and it’ll split out the tracks for you. It records to a SD card. You’d then take those three separate tracks and pop them into an editor…you could use GarageBand to edit it.
i'm surprised w/ all these 'lighting hack' videos that I've never seen anyone else suggesting using the chicken coop warming light fixtures. that's what I call them :) They seem to be the perfect shape, and if you put the bulb protector on, you could put some fabric over that and create a perfect soft light. I'm not a content creator, just want to look decent on video calls, meetings, etc. so don't want to spend money, that is what I am going to do!
Heres a question, I have editor installed on my ssd (where my OS is) when i edit videos it outputs the videos on HDD. But my SSD is still getting used. it accelerates wear and tear if im assuming right. How do i let my HDD do all the heavy lifting?
So to clarify, are you saying you have your OS installed on an external SSD, or is it installed on an internal SSD in your machine and you also have a “spinning” HDD? Also, which editor are you using?
What is the brand of monitor I should get with my M1 MacBook Air to be able to run that workaround ? Also what is the best adapter I should use? Something with usb c coming from the MacBook and hdmi mini coming from the hub? I feel like 60hz is a terrible refresh rate. Especially when buying a monitor that handles up to say 170hz. I need some help here please.
If you don’t mind the constant sound of a jet engine. Those fans are going to be spinning up quite a bit. What’s your situation and the other options you’re looking at? If it’s purely based on price and the M2 MBA is what you can afford, have you been able to find any M1 Pro MBPs?
The pro is going to give you more thermal headroom than a MBA. The M2 chip is certainly going to be slightly better in a benchmark, but for sustained video editing workflows that extra headroom will help. I still use my M1 Pro for video editing.
Hello Sir, question. Macbook M2 Air 8gb can survive 1 hour of video (1080) like capcut with multiple browser? I am planning to buy one since it's cheaper.
You’ll definitely be using that memory pretty quickly with multiple browsers. The 1080p timeline isn’t an issue, but you’ll eventually be restarting your browsers along with video editing because you’ll likely max out the swap memory on that fairly frequently. It’s possible, but you either make an investment now, or pay later. It’s a great machine, don’t get me wrong. I still use it every day. If this is to help you get started where you’ll eventually upgrade later, then that’s fine, but a little extra memory could make it so you’re not having to upgrade so soon.
I just recently bought this mic and plugged it into my computer opened ons and it doesn’t record nor I can’t hear my headset anymore it is stressful and annoying … help please!!
Hi. How much size of files can we import to luma? Can i import 4k 60 one or two hours long video to luma and edit it or it has lag this way? Do i need 16 gb ram new ipad pro for better editing? Is it 16 ram worth ? Can luma use this 16 ram or it will be blocked? And can this app handle two layer video editing in 4k long videos?
So after I posted this video it wasn’t long after that Apple provided some updates to the system where the apps could start taking advantage of more memory. So, the extra memory could help with this situation, but still not necessary, especially if it’s not within your budget. Luma can work with multiple layers of 4K files. I’ve tested this many times. You’re really just limited by the storage space. So, if you’re editing on the iPad there would be limits to the files based on how much storage you’ve invested in. If you’re editing from an external it would be the same, but if you have more storage on the external then you really can work with a fairly large timeline.
Comparing stabilization recording yourself is a waste of a comparison. Al I want to see is walking with camera pointed forward. Selfie recording is just unhelpful.
Maybe this video will help: Get Smooth Footage on the Sony a6400 Without Stabilization ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F3AvMM6BAlI.html Although, it’s not really comparing it with an OSS lens or IBIS. Appreciate your feedback. Have an awesome day 🤘
@@KevinRossRN I appreciate the suggestion. However I couldn’t care less about post production work on my videos. I’m trying to figure out what is best for point and shoot, low light and stable. Mirrorless could be an option if I could find a GoPro like results but with better indoor low light capabilities.
Here’s the thing. If you want GoPro level stabilization, well, much of that is software providing that. But if you are truly wanting something close to that level of stabilization from a mirrorless camera, then a body with IBIS that is paired with an OSS lens is going to be what you’re looking for. Some of the newer APSC Sony models are great, but I now appreciate that full frame option in lower light situations.
Hi from India... Im planning to buy one sony camera... Both photography and videography... Mainly photography... A6600 body only costs 65000 indian rupees snd a6400 with 16 50 lens cost 74000 Indian rupees... Which one would u suggest...
Hey man I am from India Loved your videos on macs I have watched many of your videos recently I want to buy a MacBook but was confused if 256 gb base variant will be sufficient for me or not but after watching your videos on SSD and external storage devices I think I could go for 256 gb my use case is for college and studying and 1080p video editing I think the base variant will be good for me instead of spending too much for just an upgrade for 512 gb apple is charging around 238 dollars in India. What do you think will it be good for me to buy base variant??
If you’re wanting to do some editing, you can certainly do all of that on an external drive without issue. Even though I have a larger capacity on mine I still often just use the external drive. As long as you feel like your day-to-day use will be fine with the base storage when you’re in class or doing work where you want to be portable without having to connect to something external.
i have 2 option either i can go for 8gb ram or 16 one ..which one should i buy as an engineer student having focus on app development and and some normal editing . should i go for m3 ? please reply
Hello! I have an audio interface with 5 inputs, but I'm having trouble setting them up in GarageBand. Could you please provide any advice or guidance on how to resolve this issue? ( Im trying to use 5 mics)
@@KevinRossRN Also, ive tried adding them all but whenever i try to hit the red button to record everything all at once it wont work. It only allows me to hit 3 buttons at the same time max.
Hi Kevin thanks for the review. While its a bit dated, whats the best monitor for 2024 for both gaming and Macbook M3 Pro Max? I only have enough space on my desk for one monitor only. I also need 2 HDMI ports if possible. I heard the Benq is the best in terms of colour accuracy and prefer that, however if there are any other model and make out there that can support Mac colour accuracy vs a good framerate for PS4 or PS5 support for FPS like Call of Duty. Thanks!
@@KevinRossRN Not Yet. My current BenQ 4K monitor is flickering with my newly purchased MBP M3 Max (older models seem to have issues with the apple chip laptops) so I need to find a new one. I found that the US version BenQ models that support Mac are not available or different model number in Hong Kong. So is hard for me to compare. Also only one choice for the Mac available which is so sad.
How is the video editing performance, confused with the 2018 2019 16 inch and m1 air all refurbished costing around the same, ofcourse the m1 consumes way less power but the screen real estate in the 16 inches is unparalleled, 4k editing iphone footage web browsing typing any recommendations or could you do a 4k video editing test thanks
So I just wanted to clarify that you’re looking at the 2018 or 19 MBPs because those have the x86 architecture in them…Intel. Those machines certainly have more screen real estate, but their performance will be different than the M1. Are you looking at the MacBook Air or have you considered the M1 MacBook Pro? The air can handle the iPhone footage.
Well, if you want to stick with GarageBand for iOS, I know this might be a bit of a pain, but you could try and have different segments. So basically just plan to record up to a certain time on the first 60(ish) minutes and then start a new recording for the remainder. You can still edit those sessions into a longer episode. However there are other options you may want to invest in such as LogicPro or FL Studio
Hey Kevin, This was very insightful. I’d like some advice. I was looking to buy a MBA base 8GB. I usually only make 1 min long videos for social media. Mostly slow mos shot on phone. I currently use CapCut. Still a beginner but will be getting myself a cam soon for similar content too. Would the MBA base model cut it for me?
Glad to help. With CapCut and shorter form content, you should be fine. I don’t personally use the MBA for video editing these days, but I have thrown in some short clips here and there when I need to edit something for a client on the fly and I don’t have my MBP with me.
Are you recording with an iPad or computer? And, are you referring to the settings to use as far as when you’re editing? I will say that your microphone, breathing technique and especially the environment you’re recording in will make a difference.
@Jay-eg8md well, there is definitely going to be some experimenting here. Once you’ve gotten a decent mic then it’s mainly going to making sure you’ve got the right levels…not too low and definitely not too “hot” where you’re clipping your audio. Post production is where it all happens and I can say that it’ll depend on the voice. I was doing a podcast with three of us and I had to edit a little bit on my track, my other (male) cohost needed some more tweaking, but the female host on the show didn’t need anything. I didn’t touch her voice. Because of her mic and her vocal pitch, it was near perfect.
Hello kevin, i want to ask, For daily use and regular video editing, which prefer mba 2 base or better choose mba 1 base model? Please ur recommendation thanksss
Well, for daily (non-video editing) use, either one is going to be great. I still use the M2 MBA every single day for office tasks and my wife is using the M1 MBA every day for the same thing. As I might have mentioned in the video (it’s been awhile since I made this), but for regular video editing these machines will be able to handle some sustained workflows, but it really depends on what camera footage and video editors you’re working with. I’d still recommend a MBP for regular editing, but if you have to use the MBA then at this point I’d go for the M2. I would recommend upgraded memory if you can. Otherwise you may be finding yourself having to close programs or restarting the machine more regularly to have a smoother experience.
Are you able to find a M1 Pro within the same budget. I’d just be concerned that if you’re really wanting to use AE on the air that you would be making some compromises.
No, 16GBs. I’d honestly recommend the extra memory for this type of work flow. Many people test these with base specs, but after you have the machine on and several apps running, you’re going to be experiencing some throttling. These machines are efficient, but for heavier tasks it’s really best to invest in a bit more memory if you want a solid experience.
How do you pair/sync the audio and video together? or are they connected somehow through a cord so that you do not have to match up in post production?
I should do a video on this, but I did (somewhat) touch on this in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sPKCmXeHhCI.html Starting at about 8:15 in the video and then I show a workflow later on. Basically, before you get into the podcast content and you have your video recording and the audio being recorded, you just count down 3-2-1 and then clap. You’ll then sync up those spiked waveforms from the clap.
@@KevinRossRN thank you for replying! Please help me out lmao. I’m using the M1 8GB iMac, and i believe the codec for FCP is H.264 something like that? i also just ordered the M3 pro MacBook.
@ArmyBarbie Well, that base model iMac (unfortunately) is going to struggle a bit. As far as the codec, just wondering about the camera footage. Also, are you doing a rough cut first, and then going back and adding effects? Also, have you tried transcoding the footage first in FCPX? It’ll take a little time to do depending on how long the timeline is, but it should help it run smoother. As far as the M3, it should chew through the timeline. Did you at least add a little extra memory to your build?
@@KevinRossRN yes i got the 18GB 512SSD i hope that’s enough. I didn’t understand computer specs before buying the iMac, so now it collects dust smh. I’m filming in 4K using the Sony ZV-E1. I use proxy on my 8GB MacBook and it works but takes days to edit 😂 so hopefully this new MacBooks works better. Is there anything i could do to the iMac?
@ArmyBarbie That codec should be pretty efficient to work with. I think when these machines first came out they were “screaming” through these timelines when compared with their predecessors. Aside from working with proxies and transcoding the footage before, just make sure you’re minimizing any other demands on the machine (closing other programs) due to that 8GBs of memory. With the constant iteration of these video editors they offer more features, but start to demand more from the machine. That spec of MBP should be just fine. It really should be a night and day experience because of the video processing capability in that particular chipset.
Careful with thunderbolt 4 hubs from Anker. I have learned they have compatibility issues ie with new Apple products. I had to replace my HUB due to this issue as Anker will not deal with the problem. I think they may not support Apple for some strange reason.
Thanks for sharing, and yes, there’s definitely a hang up with that Apple Silicon (specifically) hardware that seems to present with problems. I’m still using this hub today, but generally just for display, audio, and some accessories.
My Downs Syndrome son has a some queries re running apps/software externally from an old Mac HD but there is not enough room here to discuss his queries. He does not have any social media so cannot contact you that way so I wonder if you might have an email address we could contact you on? Heyy, I'm going to get a mac book for photo and video editing. Do you think I should get a mac book air 2024 with 16gb ram and 512 ssd, or rather the mac book pro 2024 with 8gb ram and with 512 ssd. Both cost about the same, but I haven't had a macbook yet, which is why I don't know so well about it.
@@KevinRossRN I do sports photography. I just take pictures that I edit in Lightroom and videos that last about 1 minute. So nothing so special, but I would still like to have a powerful laptop on the go, even if I'm on vacation or something, for example.
The extra memory will certainly help with Lightroom. It’s what I use and it’ll take a good portion of it. The quick videos will be fine on the MBA. The advantage of the MBP is the fan and that thermal envelope. For sustained workflows you’ll notice a difference, but with the shorter videos I doubt you’d even have that concern. Honestly I often recommend going with a little more memory. I don’t know anyone that has regretted it. I still use my M2 MBA every day and do some light editing from time to time. I still haven’t upgraded my M1 MBP because everything I’ve thrown at it, it just tears right through it. But again, for your use case right now, the MBA.
thank you! how can you extend the time in garageband for a 2 person podcast? I have both my mics set up but I want to set the time in garageband to record as long as possible preferably 2 hours. thanks!
