This lecture provides a detailed explanation of the rolling sphere method based on IEC 62305-3 with some examples. It provides the explanation using basic math equations without the requirement of using any software (e.g. AutoCAD). It explains how to calculate penetration depth and explains the common mistakes done using this method.

thank you for your Video. I have a question, according to the example why we can't increase the height of cupper terminal more than 3m....?
@railwayengineeringinsights6463

Yes, sure you can increase it to any number you want. I just picked it for example.

Hi… Does Mesh provided on roof also helps in Lightning protection of nearby building using rolling sphere method?
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
@railwayengineeringinsights6463 2 месяца назад
Yes it helps and rolling sphere shall be applied. Please note that in this case you need check equipment that are roof mounted and be careful with the design.

Sir what is my redius if hight is 150 mtr
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
In case height is more than 60m then we need to provide projections in between to avoid side flash over. Protrusions (spikes) coming out. Radius will depend on risk assessment.

How to choose level class??
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
For that we need to follow risk assessment based on iec 62305-2.
