I think it’s also worth mentioning that besides saving space, you can’t actually record ProRes Log in 4K 60fps without an external drive the phone won’t let you.
I respect that you gave iPhonedo credit. Not a lot of people would do that. This is such a great idea. You know companies are rushing to put this out lol
There's a newer version of that Samsung drive. the t7 shield. It has a rugged case. it is slightly thicker than the t5, but I think it is a bit wider so the radius of the ring maybe a bit more fitting. but this is a great idea. thanks for this!
I read that the SANDISK drive draws more power than the iPhone can provide. The Samsung draws less and is compatible. Would be nice to find a cable that is even less obtrusive.
I did this same setup using the recommended magnetic ring from iphonedo and I didn't need to add a zip tie or anything because the recommended magnetic ring from Amazon has a stronger magnet on it. It works perfect and I've tested it on multiple iphones. I'd spend the extra money on the stronger magnetic ring because I hate the look of zip ties or tie downs on this otherwise clean setup.
You can get a u shaped usb c male to female male to male, etc and that leaves no hanging wire, also, if you cut the mag safe in half or in quarters, that allow one to have it with no hanging or protruding part, also you can get small portable chargers that have MagSafe inbuilt and then attach the memory to the charger and you have a dual memory and charger back up that will sit on any set up, phone small tablet, etc.
I use type c adaptor. but my hard disk is not detected on my iphone 15 pm. but my memory card is detected. I tried to ask apple support, all they told me is upgrade my ios. any idea sir?
I just started watching this and perhaps I need to get to the end of the video to comment but going to anyways. Isn't this all irrelevant if you use the FREE Blackmagic Camera app which allows you to save 4k 60 log footage internally? I personally use this app because I have full control over ISO and shutter angle and set ISO between 1100-1400 which is optimal for the most dynamic range with this sensor. The iPhone camera app does not allow you to adjust ISO, shutter, or save 4k 60 log internally. I only use the native camera app to take photos now and programmed the new side button to open the Blackmagic Camera app for quick access. Add the new Polar pro case and variable nd filter, and in my opinion it becomes the most powerful, thinnest, and lightest pocket camera to exist I think and no funky looking ssd and cable attachment hanging off the back of your phone which will most certainly damage your usb-c port at some point.
I saw the IphoneDo video but in his he had to turn all the magnets around one by one. You seemed to have the right MagSafe ring without having to do that. Can I ask where you got that from, as it’s not as simple as you would think finding a ring that isn’t the opposite way around with regards to the magnet. Either than or I’ve got it all wrong !! Which is entirely possible. Thanks
I bought the Sandisk SSD for my 15 Pro Max. When I plugged it in, it did not show up in my files app. I called Sandisk and was told that the SSD had not been tested with the iPhone 15. So, he was saying, or implying that it did not work with this phone. I returned the SSD and got the Samsung T7 Shield. It did show up in my files folder, but there was no way to transfer files from the photo library to it. The T7 had 3 programs on it, one for Android, one for Mac, and one for Windows. The Geek person at Best Buy said it needs a program from Apple to work. So, how do all these people I see doing videos on these SSD's get them to work? What am I doing wrong?
hello, beautiful video, congratulations, I wanted to kindly ask you where I could find that type of cable that you used in the video, then the SDD is the Samsung T7 right? I was thinking of the 1 Tera one. thanks for your possible answer
Great idea, but one issue is running out of battery before your shooting. My 12 Pro will run out of battery a,d with .5TB I never ran out of storage. My new 15 Pro has 1 TB. How do you address the power issues unless you go to a docking station with multiple I/O ports with a USB-C power in port like I have for my iPad Air Gen Pro?? No one has answered that question. Seems like we need a 2-1 USB-c cable that will supply power and well as the video. Just sayin’!
Is there a reason you didnt use the included Samsung USB C cable? I would think that would have the 20gb spec. I'm pretty sure the iPhone itself on the Pro and Pro Max versions are only 10GB anyway.
About that SanDisk drive… there has been a serious problem with recent ones losing all the data on the drive. All WD will do is to replace the drive with another one from the same unreliable series. So beware. Samsung also had a problem with their pro drives a couple of years ago. I don’t remember the model numbers. I recently bought a small Kingston ssd thats 2TB and has a 2GB/s read/write speeds. Seems to be a reliable model. Much smaller than these drives. Was on sale on Amazon for $134. I don’t know if it’s still on sale. Model SXS2000/2000G I have nothing to do with Kingston, so I’m not shilling for them.
Great video, next time try rendering in 2K resolution (YT Video) This makes the video quality much better. And you will be assigned a different Video codec by RU-vid.I hope this helps, thanks again for the video.
Thinking of doing something like this but worried about the battery life. I'll need a couple of hours recording time. Thoughts on how you could charge the phone off external battery + hook up an ssd at the same time?
Hope this helps to resolve the external battery inquiry. iPhone 15 Pro: External SSD VS Thumb Drive ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OqysV7GGWqw.html
Roger: Great idea. The new magnetic ring you recommend (Encased Magnetic Mount 2-pk) is more like a disc than a ring. Do you still attach the magnetic side to the MagSafe area of the iPhone case and then the adhesive side to Samsung SSD? Does it add much additional weight?
I have a similar setup to this. bought the mophie snap adapter and applied it to my T7. I cant get the drive to stick to the phone it keeps falling off.
Thank you for the video. I wish I could buy a silver version of that T7 SSD in Germany. I can get only a titan grey, red, or blue one. The titan grey is a bit too dark for summer use. Never mind, how strong is the magnet you're using? Can you trust the magnet to hold the SSD by itself?
Having it hand out on the side ruined my charging port so no not a good idea! There has to be something better! I’ve got 66,000 photos/videos on my iPhone 15+ that I need to get off and onto some sort of memory, whether it be a flash drive or an SSD card! Any advice?? TIA!
I intend using a Ulanzi iPhone mounting clamp with Samsung T7 Shield, I think there is sufficient clearance between bracket & iPhone to wedge the drive in place. Worth a look 👍
This is a great idea question I have an iphone 14 and a T5 would a lighting adapter work on making a connection and what is a great app to manage or use to move images etc.
I haven’t tested it with iPhones prior to iPhone 15 but I’m going to assume that it doesn’t work. That it does indeed require a direct USB-C connection to iPhone. I think.
Can you use the Samsung T7 shield 2TB external SSD ? Was told iPhone 15 Pro supports only up to 1TB Heard the earlier Samsung T7 had issues with erratic speeds and being unreliable for sustained long writes for AppleProRes Log for direct 4K files from iPhone 15 Pro to the external SSD for the original T7 SSD Heard the T7 Shield was a better ( improved ) SSD to use
To get your phone video to record to the SSD are you forced to use "log" only...or can I realtime write @4k hvec or whater it's called? I don't have the phone yet.
Quick question, I shoot RU-vid videos on my phone, and I use the DJI Mic for recording. Is there a way to use the DJI Mic through the USB-C and record on an SSD at the same time using a USB-C hub or something?
Hey! Nice content! Do you know about sasmung ssd t9 4tb connects to iphone 15 pro max ? who knows? cause people say that Sandisk Extreme Pro 4 tb needs more than 4,5 W that is unreal to connect to iPhone 15PM
Hi there. Great video...I have a Saumsung T7 SSD and an iphone 15 promax...but I wonder if there is a USB-C flash drive/thumb drive that would be fast enough for Pro Res LT- I don't need the highest Pro Res HQ- so have you tried the SK 512GB Dual USB C Flash Drive, 2-in-1 External USB 3.2 Gen2? It's a USB drive and it has USB C on one end and regular USB A at the other...I wonder if it is really fast for video recording with my new iphone 15 pro max...easier to carry thanmy Samsung T7 SSD. Also I want to keep the weight to a minimum so that I can use the drive attached to the phone while on a small gimbal like the DJI Mobile 6 which can only carry 290grams. Thanks
@@iyashdahiya hey...yep...but didnt care about it after the first shoot! All hype...I decided to record H265 internally with Black Magic app...I don't do paid gigs with my iphone so I don't care that much. I use my Sony FX30 and a real gimbal for paid gigs
Hi, great video! I'm planning to buy an iPhone Pro Max, but I already got an external 1To SSD + iCloud+ with 200Go. Would you say buying a 256Go iPhone is enough, or would you still go for a 512Go?
or you can just use a Samsung Type-C USB Flash Drive? 256gb will give you 37mins which is plenty for most people to get going, carry 2 or 3 with you at any one time. No cable required.
It’s true but it will vary when you’re editing in terms of speeds. See here. iPhone 15 Pro: External SSD VS Thumb Drive ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OqysV7GGWqw.html
If you shoot alot, transferring from the phone regularly would be a tiresome process. If you are an avid videographer this setup makes more sense actually.
@@NicoDa1Well, you are maybe too young, but SSDs are highly sensitive not just to magnets but all kinds of radiation. That is the reason why SSDs are packed to the brim with error correcting algorithms (google it) and are double and triple saving bits and bytes because SSDs degrade already without magnets next to it. That being said, that MagSafe magnets are certainly not great but due to the build in resilience, all that happens is that the lifetime of the SSD degrades faster.
