Ride the cab of an Alco C628 - and watch from trackside - as Extra 6706 West hauls a Chicago & North Western ore train in Upper Michigan! In Part 3, we’ll chat with Engineer Roger LaForest between switching moves at Empire Mine. Then we’ll head back south with 109 loaded ore cars.

Thank you! We had a blast producing Centuries of the North Woods. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it! RR

That is the sanding control. He is dropping sand onto the rail for additional traction while pulling, and to keep the wheels from sliding while braking. RR

Roger was a true engineer. It took a while to get him to warm up to us for the interview, but he provided some great information about ore trains and running them. RR

Unfortunately this mine had closed, hopefully not forever. A lot of old timers I have spoken with all seem to dislike the FM locomotives.

We also heard from various CNW personnel off-camera that were happy to see the FMs go. They did serve the ore line well, but the C628 was a welcome replacement. RR

Hey, good question...what is the R after the number mean on the ore cars? I wish I woulda know you had a strong interest in the CNW when I worked with you....I woulda gave you some stuff my dad collected...had doubles if not triples of pocket knives, hats, buckles, pencils and such...

I'm not completely sure, but I think it indicates that the car has been equipped with roller bearings. At the time this footage was shot, most of them still had friction bearings. RR
