Abandoned and Derelict - here is a little extension to our recent video on the Lancaster Canal. It turns out there are a few areas of remaining canal infrastructure we didn't see when we filmed the main video, so we've popped back to capture them for you!!

Elliot what an adventure and how different things looked from above. Good use of the drone. It is such a shame that the city has not made an attempt at using plaques to identify these historic landmarks and then create a walking tour or a path connecting them up. Once historical sites are gone they can never be returned the way they were. Thank you for archiving a bit of British history. Can't wait for next week. Mark Alberta, Canada

Thanks Mark. In plenty of the places we go to it’s quite the opposite - they get fenced off and the authorities try to keep you out! It’s difficult in some respects I suppose because the places become private property or at least the property of organisations who don’t want the extra responsibilities of having members of the public in their areas. Hard balance to find that one? Case in point is our next vlog…you should like that one 🤩

Drone footage nice and steady well done. Great hidden gems viewed while they're still there, many places we dont see from the past that are still existing. Cheers.. Will take a trip to the land slip this weekend yo see if the crt has moved some earth. Kev the brinklow kayaker

Thanks Kev - as you rightly say we need to grab them whilst we can, and the drone (nicknamed Trevor) allows us to go to places we can’t access by foot. Great stuff on the land slip. Will be interesting to see if things have moved or not?

Also to note, If you go across the M61, opposite the Walton Summit basin, you will find on the southern section's original route a raised pipe that once went over the canal and an old canal bridge.

MMMM thougth I mentioned that in the previous blog , re Old Tram Bridge , steam winch above the bridge to pull the carts up. & thru Avenham Park to the coal Depot Plagerists and the concrete bridge was the 3rd one

The steam winch etc sounded very interesting, plus the chap who used to walk to work there everyday and covered something like 200,000 miles + in his lifetime. We couldn’t find enough evidence of it to put in the video ultimately but it was interesting to find out about when doing the research.

So the railway has gone, the canal has gone. I don’t know where the railway went to the canal could be very popular now with boaters.

The railway element of this will be coming in the next video we release. If you ignore the railway station (t would look weird in due course if we didn’t reference it here) then hopefully it makes sense. The next video should be a corker!

You do know there is a full plan aleady been put into place to reopen this section behind the uclan building, It's why the Aldi is closing on Corporation St, it's all getting demolisied so this can go in

That’s would be AMAZING but it’s hard to see it happening? The level difference between the basin (Aldi) and the remaining canal at Ashton must be huge? Never say never but we cannot see how on earth that would happen now so it sounds like a (very attractive pipe dream). We’ll keep our eyes peeled for it though.

I've been made to believe that the uni were going to fill in the openings between the non used train bridges and build on that area, but I don't know if that is part of the same plan to reopen that section of camel.

Sadly that was just one man's unrealistic pipe dream several years ago. It would also involve the University (and others) having to demolish or partially demolish buildings that have been built since the canal closed.

@@Hyberusthis is the bit I don’t understand about the plans. Usually these sorts of things take: - money - reason - political positioning - public support - a business case Plus other stuff BUT if you need to demolish perfectly good, fully occupied and functional buildings, owned by an influential building owner who is only eco landing themselves then surely your chances of pulling it off are practically ZERO??

@@ExploreTheUK1 As I said it was one man's plan. He got a lot of publicity for it, but when it went to a public meeting it turned out that he had no idea of who owned the land, how much it would cost to make it happen, who would use it and so forth.
