Extract Depth Map from Mobile Photos for Photoshop!

The Lytro camera was definitely ahead of its time in light field photography and depth mapping.

I'm always amazed how even if it is an old format, Jpeg can pack so much metadata as depth map and vector paths!

Thanks for the great work you do and all the knowledge u share. Just a small tip in regards to opening a folder via CMD: go into the desired folder, click the path bar (exanple D:\DaVinci Resolve\.gallery), delete everything, type CMD, press enter. Boom you have the CMD on the correct folder ;)

Excellent video Unmesh! This could be yet another reason why cell phones will dominate photography in coming years. By no means I’m saying DSLR/Mirrorless cameras will be obsolete, but they will definitely have a tough competition against Cellphone camera advancement & versatility.

The quickest way I have found is an app called disparity, it separates the depth map data from portrait photos. You can also enable this feature in non portrait mode photos by using the Focos iOS app to add background blur, then export them both to your computer and open in Photoshop, hope this helps ;)

Pretty cool, thanks for the info. I slapped together a simple bat file to extract the depth map automatically, I thought I'd share if anyone is interested. Just so you don't have to open the cmd prompt, change directories and enter the command over and over. Just change the directory location of the exiftool on your machine before running it, this only needs to be done once before the initial use. For simplicity just rename the photo you'd like to process to "image" before running the bat file, then double click the bat file and it will automatically run exiftool and extract the depth map. I hate having to repeat the same thing over and over, so a simple bat file helps eliminate the redundancy. Just copy and paste the commands below and paste them into a text file, change the directory location, save it and change the .txt extension to .bat and you're all set. Anyway, I hope this helps someone. Enjoy! @echo off color 0a start cmd /c :: change directory path to your specific location cd C:\Projects\Depth Map\ pause :: for simplicity change the .jpg image name you'd like to extract the depth map from to image. You can rename the depth map and image after extraction echo exiftool -b -MPImage2 image.jpg > image_depth.jpg

Also resizing depth map is just as simple as entering the width of original photo in pixels with aspect ratio lock on... Depth map doesn't seem to be of same resolution for photos from different phones... But damn... This is really a cool trick I've learnt so far.

You should have directly written cmd in the directory tab and cmd will open in same directory

Sorry to say, the depth map extractor doesn't seem to work with iphone portrait mode photos - neither the old .heic versions or the new jpg versions.

I want to be good in "make it realistic" type arts, I mean realistifying cartoon characters, imaginary characters... soo that kind of art forms. Not like retouching the photos to be uploaded on social media type. So I'm finding some lack of guidance for... like what kind of tools I need to master for that. What kind of mindset I need in this kind of arts etc etc. So that I can be more efficient in less time. Hope you're getting my point. I'll be glade if I get some help regarding this.

I have a problem after extracting the depth by the code - when dropping it to the PS, it says ' depth.jpg is not ready. When in the folder, I can't see the image itself, just a file. Any advice is much appreciated.

the Focos mobile app will analyze your photo and create background blur, and it allows you to export the depth map it creates!

That's all very well; now tell us how to make Lightroom use depth maps, extracted from any phone as range masks in local adjustments :-)

I've tried depth map extractor but only get a dim grayscale image of my original photo - not an actual depth map. I've tried it with two different iPhones (a 13 and 15), both with photos in portrait mode, and gettting the same result from both. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Seems that next step will be lens changless f/less revolution. One zoom lens will rule all apertures. With one slider in lightroom to sync every photo to look like f/1.2. Maybe better f/0.95? Amazing.

I have a feature on my Huawei phone which allows me to adjust the aperture after taking a photo, but this is very informative. I wonder if we can do this on photos taken by cameras.
