(chapters available) We are back with a banger! This week, on the 50th episode of the VFX Notes Podcast, Ian (‪@beforesmag‬ ) and I review both Extraction 1 and 2 from Netflix with Chris Hemsworth. We liked the films so much that we did a double bill! We break down the amazing practical and digital VFX but also talk about the current anti-CGI backlash and the lack of representation of VFX behind the scenes in most films today. Apologies for the mini-rant 😡😎! Enjoy the video with chapters. Don't forget to share it around. It would really help us grow the podcast.

Wise words and so correct Hugo! I've been working in the stunt industry for over 30 years, but I am also a VFX hobbyist/animator and LOVE CG/VFX. The best action for me is the marriage of live action enhanced with VFX. Hardly any of the extraction action would have been possible without VFX, and it just made it even better! You can push the boundaries much more with VFX and it looks better plus also safer!!

Oppenheimer btw. is another great example. I remember Nolan or Marketing talking about there is NO CG in this Film as he wanted everything for real. And Nolan goes a long way to achive this by pure budget - we know that - but after watching the Film i´m pretty sure there are *hundrets* of CG and Compositing Shots in there. It´s like if Filmmakers don´t count "invisible" VFX as VFX - which is paradox as it´s basically just the best Kind of VFX. David Fincher Films (and Series) are a great example for this - having Tons upon Tons of "invisible" VFX to make a totally normal scene look exactly like the director wanted it to be even if it means replacing half of it - but noone noticing. And i´m speaking as a guy who´s not working on major stuff like you guys - i supervise and do work on Shows and Films with low budgets as VFX are just everywhere. But even in this sector i can tell you that there are sooo many "invisible VFX" shots done - it´s crazy - and you have directors and producers that rely so much on "do it in post" even though there is little to no budget to do it or deadlines that never incorporated VFX work.

I love these guys definitely one of the best podcasts ever. I always love to hear you two talk about the magic the VFX artists make happen in the films I love, and how they do it.

Remember the times of those very expansive making-of Materials on the Extended Editions of the LOTR Films. Where they had gone into detail on all the pratical AND digital mastery they had to do to make it work - where everyone was raving about what WETA was able to do digitally to make those films possible. It seems like this, Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 where the only times VFX Artists were to stand in the Spotlight. Maybe a bit of Avatar - but there again the focus was much more on other parts even though those films are basically CG-movies with a sprinkle of real Footage. Modern Movies have SO MANY VFX that it almost seems like Directors try to protect their reason to even be there and film something by not mentining the 80% of work thats needs to be done afterwards to make it an actual movie. I´m thinking Marvel-terms here. People are just not aware that every major Film would be an unwatchable hot mess without VFX.

20s in here and you're so right Hugo. VFX is just a dirty word in holywood, and it's so disrespectful.

AWESOME HUGO! I MEAN LITERALLY VFX AND 3D ARTISTS NEEDS A HUGE SHOUTOUT EVERYTIME WHENEVER THE DIRECTOR OR PRODUCERS TALKS ABOUT ANY FILM WHICH INCLUDES THE VFX . ONE OF THE TOP HARDWORKING INDUSTRY DON'T EVEN GET CREDITS AND THATS BASIC, SO WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT, ITS STILL FAR MORE BETTER INTERNATIONALLY, BUT THE THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA, OMG, IT'S REALLY HARD TO GET UNINIONIZED. KEEP RANTING PLEASE. THANKS MAN, FULL SUPPORT.

I watched Extraction 2 yesterday (haven't see the first one) and I am in the middle of the interview. I wonder if guys are going to share similar thought, which is - for me It felt like a very well made narrative driven first person shooter game. Like HF2 or something. Specifically the 21 minute oner. I wonder if I am the only one.

Its easier for people to pull apart DC/Marvel movies as they have fantasy/superhero elements so of course they are VFX heavy, but Extraction like you guys said, the documentary makes out its done for real, and its not a fantasy film, then the audience automatically assumes it was all done for real/in camera etc

I was really hoping there were some clever Texas switches going on in the chase scene coz it looked really good.

Should Hugo stop complaining about behind-the-scenes/interviews/articles/headlines deliberately fudging the truth? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Keep doing it. In fact, do it MORE. I'll be disappointed if I sit through 60 minutes and there's NOT some Hugo calling out this BS. There's a marked increase in that kind of "doing it all for real, no CG"-verbiage over the years, and I don't think it's going to get any better. You (and others like you) are fighting the good fight!

39:46 - Send that clip to The Movie Rabbit Hole. He's currently doing a fairly viral series exposing stuff exactly like this.

Yes, I have seen his video before and talked with him about all of this. Rabbit Hole will be on my channel on the 8th of December during World VFX Day to chat about this with Ian Failes from before & afters. We have also discussed this issue a few times on this Podcst for the last 2 years. I also wrote this article in September if you want to check it out (I'm currently making a video version of that article to join Movie Rabbit in the fight against this). Did you see One Shot and the new One More Shot with Scott Adkins? Two action movies filmed to look like one take and also play out in real time unlike birdman and 1917

Also tbh I respect when they do these ‘oners’ but I am kinda over them now. It’s just a kind of film snobbery, to show other productions ‘look what we can do’ etc My family who are not involved in the film industry don’t know if it’s a one shot or separate shots. It’s aimed mainly at people who work in the game. Most people can’t tell, or if they can, it kinda takes people out of the ‘moment’ as they are thinking ‘ohh wonder how they did that shot’ etc so kinda defeats the purpose. I’d rather have an action sequence that’s shot/edited well with great angles rather than shaky cams trying to stitch shots together with wipes/blends etc

and I HATE it when they don't give credit to the VFX team, its total BS!!! 90% of these shots wouldn't look half as good without it!!
