(includes chapters) This week, on the VFX Notes Podcast: Ian Failes and I have a double celebration. We celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Podcast and celebrate 30 years of Jan de Bont's SPEED, Ian's favourite film! We go deep, so strap in! We review the film and discuss the practical FXs, explosions, CGI, compositing, miniature work and so much more. We also talk about the future of digital preservation with Podcasts and extras and even debate about the way artists are seen today vs the 90s and 2000s. Get ready for a long one, and don't forget, never go below 50MPH.
Don’t forget to subscribe. I’m trying very hard to get to 100K subs to get verified on RU-vid. Please help me achieve that goal. Thank you.

27:25 this is probably one of the best uses of blue screen I've seen in a movie! The lighting and shadows on Keanu match up perfectly with the background footage, which is of the incredible elevator shaft model! This movie utilized so many great filming techniques like rear projection, matte paintings, miniatures, visual effects, and dangerous stunt work which makes it one of the best action movies ever made! Thanks for this super in-depth and informative podcast about this amazing movie!!

First of I want to congratulate you on the 3rd anniversary of the podcast! I've been listen and watching this since not that long ago but knew about you before finding the podcast, through the Before and Afters articles and Hugo's streams on Nuke. I really enjoy watching you guys talk because I feel like i'm part of these conversations, the shared opinions and some experiences. In this one specially with Hugo talking about video clubes being the norm and Blockbuster coming on the late 90's, and also the behind the scenes documentaries being one of the biggest reasons to be working in this industry. For me it was the behind the fxs of Empire Strikes Back, where it showed the history behind the FXs and the magic in movies and in particular children making movies with clay or household items. It meant not only that movies were made, but also that I could be making them. Then comes the reality of living in a third world country and the complications of having no budget, but we make what we can with what we have jajaja. Thank you guys for all your work!

Weeeee ^^ I love these retro episodes. Looking at petabytes worth of fluid sims is great and all, but these 20 to 30 year old films in my experience are much closer to the everyday VFX work and hold far more ideas on how to solve a shot than massive LED volumes and the latest and greatest in performance capture. What do you think about doing an episode on how the effects in a somewhat similar environment developed over the years? Thinking of the Batman films from 1989 till today or the Harry Potter series Great podcast, thank you so much for sharing these insights! Greetings from Berlin

The extras back then were an investment in your audience and not know it.

That is so true! Even the other day I was watching the new 4K Blu-ray of Star Wars Episode 1 and they removed the old documentaries and behind-the-scenes and replaced them with some generic marking BS. I had to buy the old DVD to have access to the old and more complete BTS. The old ones even included full breakdowns of VFX with the desktop screen and software being shown. The DVDs extra were, as still is, the best source of information.
