When a tooth has been damaged or weakened by decay, the dentist will attempt to repair it with a filling, crown or other dental procedure. But where there is too much trauma to the tooth to repair, the tooth may need to be removed from the bone socket.
Beyond injury and deterioration, there are several other common explanations for the loss of teeth:
1) Few may have excess teeth that hinder other teeth from falling in.
2) Even baby teeth don't slip out in time to make permanent teeth come in.
3) People who get braces may need teeth removed to make room for the teeth that are being transferred to their position.
4) People getting radiation to the head and neck can need to have teeth removed from the radiation field.
5) People taking cancer drugs may grow contaminated teeth because they weaken the immune system. The affected teeth may need to be extracted.
6) Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are often removed either before or after the eruption in the mouth. They usually arrive in the late teens or early twenties. They need to be removed if they are decayed or contaminated, or if there is not enough space in the mouth.
