Without a doubt, the 1911 Extreme 28.4-Litre FlameThrower Engine Fiat S76 "The Beast of Turin" is one of the most incredible cars that can be seen at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019. The reason is soon said, everything about this car is mammoth, starting from the displacement of 28.353cc 4-cylinder in-line engine that already at the time guaranteed almost 300hp at 1.900 rpm, crazy if think that we were in 1911 and that the real and unique purpose of the car was to beat speed records around the world. After the restoration of over 10 years and the union of the only two Fiat s76 cars built, the owner Duncan Pittaway has brought back to life the Beast of Turin that since 2015, fortunately for us, pays homage to its presence at Goodwood Festival of Speed. In the video, you can see the highlights with the best car performances throughout the weekend.

For anybody wondering why they made race cars with such enormously big engines back then, and don't make them that big now, the answer is the fuel. All they had to fuel them with was straight gasoline with no octane additives - and straight gasoline can only support a 6:1 compression ratio. No superchargers, no high-revving fire-breathers; the only way to make them faster was to make the engines bigger. Consider that in 1911, this engine was four cylinders, 28 litres, no supercharger (couldn't use a supercharger with compression that low) and made ~300 hp - 30 years later the Rolls-Royce Merlin was 12 cylinders, 27 litres, as supercharged as they could manage and by the end of WW2 was making 1,240 hp. The difference was mostly the fuel.

@italiansupercarvideo, Do you have any more footage of other cars that participated in the timed run? Especially two of the other car I loved were the Alfa Romeo P3, and Julian Majzub's Bugatti Type 35B -the man made a run so fast, he defeated a lot of newer cars in his 92 year-old car!

Thanks for posting this marvelous video. Are you sure about the 290km/h? The thing had 290hp (210kW) and looking around a bit, it seemed to have managed 213 km/h in one direction which is still crazy fast considering the road conditions, tires, and lack of proper brakes. But 290km/h seems unlikely with this level of power.

Thanks for writing to me, I checked again, I did a bit of research and what I wrote at the time, that crazy speed, is reported in many articles you find on the internet. have a look here: www.autoevolution.com/news/284-liter-four-pot-fiat-s76-is-alive-and-will-race-2015-goodwood-video-89598.html but I found this article that denies this crazy speed. Actually, if you think about it, a 300 HP car couldn't reach such a speed and this is also confirmed here:: www.psychoontyres.co.uk/tag/duray So I thank you for reporting this to me and I delete what I wrote at the time in the video notes. Happy New Year 🖐

The reason is the fuel tank is pressurised, but this being 1911, the tank is pressurised by means of periodically pumping a hand pump. Again this being 1911, the job is relegated to the riding mechanic, since the driver has a lot in his hands. Though I also wouldn't mind being the passenger.

The silencers you see in the old picture was only fitted to the one car that was sold, for it to be driven on the roads at the time. The car wasn't originally built to have the silencers in the first place.
