I've just bought a Kavan Pulse and it comes with motor reverse and instructions on how to set it up. I got it working but disabled it because I couldn't imagine how I might use it on a glider. Now I know! Fantastic!

Beautiful location and great flying. Tho I think the "Short"-video format RU-vid auto-creates (for better or for worse) which I first saw tagged it wrong, it said reverse thrust landing but that can't happen (no variable thrust prop). But definitely some great high drag landings, that is how I roll too and you maintained complete control to the ground, nicely done! (I also fly in higher grass areas). Some hints.. ALWAYS pull flap back before landing. If you have not lost a servo or two yet, you will, don't let the grass grab your flaps. In a foamie it will likely ruin the hinges along with the servos. Also, land "butterfly" or "crow" (it is the same thing)... when you pull flaps down, program in Ails up as well. This not only increases drag quite a bit for an even faster stop, it also helps avoid tip stalls in higher performance aircraft which you may move up to, so a good habit to form.
@AndrejSturm
@AndrejSturm Год назад
Hi man, thank you for watching and commenting 😃 I am using an ESC with reverse function, so the motor can spin the prop in reverse producing a reverse thrust almost 1:1 to the mass of the plane. This allows to dive vertically without gaining any speed.

That´s the Tundra reverse ESC :) Cool, that's usefull for landing on tight spots, needs some praticing though but for sure super cool idea!

I was thinking the same! Apparently, the centrifugal force is greater than the forces required to fold the prop back. Next thing he'll be doing is loading up with H2O and dumping - just like a full-scale example!

Nice work! Keep an eye on the ESC temperature though as the 30A and 40A versions of the Aerostar RVS only have a linear BEC, which can get pretty hot on 4S. The 60A and above ones are rated for 6S and have a better switch mode BEC.
@AndrejSturm
@AndrejSturm Год назад
Thanks for the info! I was not aware that the 40amp version has a linear BEC.
@btbplanevids
@btbplanevids Год назад
@@AndrejSturm it's not obvious ... the bigger sizes of the RVS say "SBEC" on them where the smaller ones just have "BEC". The 40A version already gets quite warm on 3S ... I tried one in a 4S seaplane with 4 servos and it got hot just setting the radio up on the bench. It *might* have been OK in flight with some airflow, but I switched to a 60A to be on the safe side. I do actually have a 40A RVS in my ASW 28 (on 3S), but I'm already using all 8 channels on the receiver so there isn't one left for reverse thrust!

Right, this is something that you'd expect to NOT work. Well done for trying. And succeeding. And its necessary sometimes with this plane which can float on and on during the flare to landing, even crow-braking isn't enough.

Hi from the UK, Andrej. I also have the Phoenix 2400 and I have a question for you. I fly on 4S and have big issues in getting the pane trimmed, currently have a 5oz (140g) lead block in the nose, battery fully forward and its still tail drags in the air! Did you add any weight, if so, how much and where?
@AndrejSturm
@AndrejSturm Год назад
Hi. For this flight I was using a 2200mAh 4s 45-90C Turnigy Nanotech Lipo with a 30g metal piece tapped on the battery placed fully forward. I was also flying this plane with a 3s 5000mAh Li-ion battery without any added weight. I have no issues with the CG but I have never measured the exact position on mine.
@bmpowellicio
@bmpowellicio Год назад
I have two, and neither is critical with battery. I use a 3s3000 and no ballast. I can only suggest that the tailplane is not true and is pulling the tail down. Mine couldn't be sweeter planes. In fact they flatter my flying so much people think that I'm good!!
@bigblokeinuk8974
@bigblokeinuk8974 Год назад
@@bmpowellicio Michael, when you say the tailplane is not true, do you mean its not trimmed correctly?
@bmpowellicio
@bmpowellicio Год назад
@@bigblokeinuk8974 Yes, it may be giving too much up-elevator. That's worth looking at because my Phoneix 2400 is well balanced with just one 3s3000 battery, and is very gentle in flight. The tailplane is screwed on, so it might be worth removing it and re-installing just in case something has interfered with the saddle it sits on. I hope you can fix it - the plane is worth having right.

I am surprised that the centrifugal force of the rotating propeller blades is enough to keep the reverse thrust from pushing the blades into the fuselage.

Hi Andrej Great!! Use my P2400 together with two sport planes for testing EdgeTx unofficial version 2.8.0 since one month as I modified my Horus X12S transmitters to touch screen and this is he only version which supports it on this radios. Use reverse thrust on most of my electric sport planes with the Frsky ESCs. Not for air breaking however. Will try tomorrow your setup on the P2400 for fun. A word of caution, the original prophub of this glider blows up eventually, dont't ask me why I know. As usually only one blade goes it will rip your motor out if you are not reacting immediately. Replaced mine with an AeroNaut hub. Thanks for sharing Richard
@AndrejSturm
@AndrejSturm Год назад
Hi Richard Thank you for your warning regarding the prophub issue! I was lucky to this day, been running the stock prop hub on my ASW28 on 4s for many years now. My Radiomaster TX16S is still running on OpenTX, so touch screen isn't working on mine. I am kinda lazy/unmotivated to make the transition as everything works well on OpenTX and the transition might not be a totally smooth process. Greetings from Slovenia 🇸🇮
@tropicairrl6121
@tropicairrl6121 Год назад
@@AndrejSturm Andrej, the transition is simple and fast but you loose all widgets, and telemetry has to be found again which means that you have to go through all Logical switches and Special functions as sensor posicions changed. In my case some work as I have very elaborate setups using a number of sensors in almost all of my models. On the other side, v2.8.0 has many bugs and uncompleted chores eventhough Nightlies come out almost every day with fixes. This also causes sometimes things which worked well not working anymore. With the new page layout in 2.8.0 however navigating and onscreen setup is very fast and nice to use after getting used to. The official rollout for EdgeTX v2.8.0 should be September 23rd, let's see. I am still hopefull that OTX comes out with a touchscreen version 2.4. Eventhough I modified my three X12S to touch screen only one of them has EdgeTx installed for testing with three different models, P2400, Esilon XL and the Uproar 3-d plane. One of these days I will try to visit you as I am amazed by your beautiful flying sites. regards

@AndrejSturm Год назад

@tropicairrl6121
@tropicairrl6121 Год назад
@@AndrejSturm Usually have one X12S for all my models and every day use at home in Puerto Rico, another one in Florida where I am member of the Osceola Flyers RC Club near Orlando as my daughter lives there and I go every 2 months for a couple of weeks flying. The third one I have as backup. All three radios have the ISRM module installed and now also touch screen. I moved in 1979 to PR but come originally from the western part of Austria and go back to visit family once a year. My nephew lives in Graz and I usually stay with him always for some days. It should be more or less close from where you are. Used to go every year X-Country hangliding to Kärnten, flying along the Drautal where 100km+ flights are relatively easy to achieve.

Hi, thanks. I have that type of brake on my Lentus and it works nice but it's no near that effective as this one - here you can dive literally vertically without gaining any speed. Both types of brakes can be used exclusively or at the same time. There is no added weight, just a different type of ESC ...
