Today's episode covers it all! I am venturing out on an absolutely frigid morning to Pass-a-Grille, Florida. The conditions are rough... the cold air, and the winds are biting - a strong cold front, and super high tide washed in thousands upon thousands of shells onto the beach the night before. We are going to shell, explore, and even learn a little(with the scientific assistance from one of my friends!)
This is a cool episode that you don't want to miss!

Hi friend, the weather was rough(mostly because I came to FL thinking I'd have warm temps, lol!) Most of the FL vids from this trip in December feature me in a warm coat 🤣 I have never seen so many molluscs beached/stranded in this way before...it was surreal to witness. Thanks for watching!

@solaceinshelling6552 Год назад
Interestingly enough, I have found quite a few uniquely hued Lightning Whelks and Florida Fighting Conch's here at Pass a Grille - it could have something to do with the diet of these molluscs in this area. Nature can indeed be heartless sometimes, that's why I feel it's important to try to include some of the small educational components, for understanding. Thank you so much for watching!

Shelling in the cold-maybe cold-water insulated diving pants, insulated diving boots and insulated, thin diving gloves..? Haha! And a battery-operated, heated vest. Whatever it takes to shell😅. Yeah, I was out there on that cold weather too! But not at P-G. Have been there since. It's the place to go for banded tulips, spiny jewelboxes and calico scallops. Also little horse conchs. That was a nice LW! You must have been walking down the beach. I don't see the rocks at the end. AND you do have to get there early because it's open 24 hrs. Ok. Now I see rocks. The end is usually the best place. Really hard not to take all those banded tulips, isn't it? I came home with a boatload last time I was there.😊 And I actually found a yellow one almost identical to yours at 23 min. Yes winter shelling after cold fronts are the best. We've had wind and rip currents the past couple of days so looking forward to that tomorrow!👍

Oh yes for sure, I did a circle in the dark and then back again in the light - mostly at dog beach, and the beach to the left of the jetty. It was also a super low tide, so there was quite a bit of beach exposed by sunrise. I have been seeing that there is another similar wash up this week because of a storm front. Hopefully the temps haven't dropped too low, and the molluscs can survive it! Thanks for watching!

I visited San /Cap this time 2 yrs ago and learned that the reason I only saw basically cockles and tulips is because it’s high season for cockles and tulips prefer to feed in cockles by attaching to their shell and drilling a small hole in them and eating the animal in the cockle. We normally are there summer or early fall so this was the first trip so early in the year and the whole beach was cockles. They would chatter and even move “walk” all around in the tide pools

Hi friend, thanks for the feeedback. I think that the bitter cold to some measure affected the stabilization on the phone. Thanks for coming along!

Not something I feel comfortable watching, I know it's nature but too much death.

I absolutely understand 💙 This was a little tough to edit together, and I wanted to make sure to try to convey the most positive message possible. It's also one of the reasons, I felt compelled to include the educational components. I appreciate your viewership 🐚

Are you not interested in cerephs, cones, olives, worm snails, etc? You walked right over so many.
@solaceinshelling6552
@solaceinshelling6552 Год назад
Oh I am interested in all of the above, especially Cones! However, I generally try to limit what I collect from the beach - there's other shellers who are looking too, and also, many of these empty shells may end up homes for little hermit crabs. But I will never turn down a Cone, unless I miss it, haha Thanks for watching!

My goodness what an awesome video!! Thank you!! 🤗🦋🤗 You need a bigger bag!! Maybe invest in nice water proof boots like hiking boots, just saying & some gloves!!

Yes, gloves for sure, & a handkerchief for the sniffles!. ;) My nose gets that way too in the cold. ;)

Thank you so much for the great feedback! The size of my mesh bag helps me to limit what I collect from the beach. I have tons of cold weather gear, that I use in the Northeast when I shell in the winter, but I didn't prepare to see similar conditions while in Florida, lol!

What would be the best thing to do if I find a beached live conch? If I place them in shallow water, will they just get beached again?
@solaceinshelling6552
@solaceinshelling6552 5 месяцев назад
In a scenario like this where there are thousands of stranded molluscs, it would be impossible to move them all. Additionally, many of these stranded molluscs were already expired because of the cold. If you encounter a couple stranded molluscs, you can relocate them to shallow water nearby. Thanks for watching!

How can a cold front make a huge pile? I’ll see shelves like this and how I didn’t know it cold Front a big piles of seashells I didn’t know how can a cold font do that
@solaceinshelling6552
@solaceinshelling6552 7 месяцев назад
Hmmm so I don't believe the Cold Front explicitly created the piles. I think the front contributed to the cause the mollusk die off, and then the tidal conditions washed ashore everything that had perished. Thanks for watching!

Hi friend! I actually have not found any seahorses in my exploring, but would love to one day! I do think SWF Beachlife just posted a video recently where she found tons of them(I think on Sanibel) Thanks as always for watching!
