There's nothing like rushing out to camp on a Friday evening after a hard week at work. That's exactly what I did on this trip and I can tell you that it was dark out there!
My new website is LIVE! www.jaylegere.com/
Thanks to Squarespace for teaming up with me and helping me get my site off the snow!

How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the RU-vid training (watching) over the years.

Bro I really hope you read this Last week I was home with Covid sick as a dog. I don't know how I stumbled upon your videos I think it was the Russian bear tent... But I pretty much watched all your stuff in total awe. I'm just a hard-working suburb guy from New Jersey. You got me through a really tough time. So last night I went to my girlfriend's house to spend the night with her and her kid. And she has a fireplace that she barely uses. So watching your videos and being inspired by you and the way you made fire,, I made a fire in the fireplace... Bro it sounds so stupid but it was so satisfying and awesome. Her kid said it was the biggest fire she never seen. It warmed up the whole house on a really chilly night. And I got to feel like you for a minute. Thank you bro, I'm definitely going to be keeping up with your adventures

God Bless you Brian, cold and lonely takes on a new meaning when you're sick. The natural warmth of a fire is the best, so real. I live alone and it's been zero and below, I'm down with a herniated disc in my lower back, can't move and feeling off the chart pain, watching these video also helped me through some very hard time. Find comfort in the basic things of life.

It is I got one very similar like that for Christmas this year I have yet to use it though get plenty of kindling
@davea1771
@davea1771 2 года назад
Those Northern Lights are the bomb. I'd probably sit out on the lake watching them until I froze half to death and be thrilled about it. That new splitter has a second advantage in that you can use it indoors where it's warmer. Combine that with a pile of kindling ready to light the fire and you can do a lot more of your firewood work where it's not freezing cold and/or windy. That and you look like a kid at Christmas using the thing. Lol. ;-D Nice start on the website too. Seeing you in the wolf sweater standing in the snow is a great way to capture your outdoor theme. One suggestion I'd make is to put a "Home" link back to the top page on the lower pages to help folks get around better.

Jay, if you like your eggs creamy I have a suggestion for you. Take a slice of bread (I like white) and butter both sides. Put it in a hot frying pan (about a wee bit over medium) and use a shot glass to cut a hole in the centre of the bread. Crack an egg into the hole and then treat it as an over-easy egg so you cook both sides. The white of the egg cooks and the yolk stays, well, creamy. Top with salt & pepper (or in your case extra old balderson cheese, lol) and eat with the side of your choice. It’s really really good. I’m a butter freak and it makes the egg and toast taste amazing!! Just thought I’d share that with you. :) Another excellent video, I’m super happy you’re starting to gain sponsorship now. You should have been sponsored a long time ago, you’re one of the top 5 bushcrafting video guys out there!! Can’t wait for the Russian bear tent video that’s coming next!! 💫⛺️❄️💯

Dont want your snowscooter to freeze up on those cold winter nights ? Here is a trick i learned from a fisherman from north of Norway. Whenever he was planning to go out to sea in the mornings, he would always make sure to bring a light bulb and a powercord with a socket on one side the night before. He would leave it plugged in to a power source and leave the bulb inside the engine compartment close to the battery. During the frosty night the light from the bulb would be just warm enough to keep the battery and engine from under performing the next morning. It worked like a charm everytime. And it needs much less power from your jackary than having to charge up the scooter battery. Great video as always

Jay, I have a 2020 Yamaha VK Professional that is used on my trapline. It has the same genesis 4 stroke engine as your venture. Mine just started this morning at minus 40. Couple of tips: when I am at home, there is a battery tender trickle charger/maintainer on it all the time. My battery tender does a great job at cleaning up the battery and keeping it full charge all the time. At my camp, I run my generator for an hour to ensure my battery is at full charge. Another great trick is turning on the ignition 2 x before attempting to start up your venture. This helps push a little more fuel through the injector and it honestly really helps with extremely cold startups. Hope this helps.
@jaylegere
@jaylegere 2 года назад
Hey Norm! My engine is a 500. It's not the same at the Genesis in your VK pro. Yours will start in much colder conditions. My engine is the same as what was in the 500 phazer.

Jay have you ever burned larch (tamarack) wood? They’re harder to find than spruce but they are native to NWT and burn a bit hotter than spruce. They’re a deciduous conifer so they have needles, in summer they look like an evergreen but they turn yellow and drop in the fall.

Keep those stove pipes clean. For the most part you burn dead wood but at times you burn mildly green. Couple that with extremely cold temps, slow burns, and single walled pipe and your asking for a chimney fire or back draft. Ive been fortunate to not have a chimney fire but i have had severe back draft. Stay safe jay i love your videos!

Love the idea of jam with eggs. But laugh out loud, my sons give sideways, left eyebrow raises at my eggs. I am a serious slimy egg lover. It must be like very, very soft yoked and any slithery parts I just slide under the toast. It gets absorbed. Your cabin/tent is cool 😎! No matter how cold it looks outside it looks cosy inside. You're very good at what you do. You're also a good narrator so your videos are never boring. Keep it up and have a crazy happy 2022 all seasons adventure. Enjoy!

Hey Jeff. The commercial stuff is new and I'm trying it out with products that mean something to me. I've had so many companies ask me to partner. So far, Squarespace and the Russian Bear tent have made sense. Also the deals are temporary at this point. That said, a jackery deal would be the last one I'd want at this point if I'm being completely honest. Those 3 companies mean something to me and I'd be proud to work with them over time. But... I don't want every video to have a sponsor. I need to be careful. Thanks again. Jay

Jay a snowmobile that won’t start in the cold sounds a bit like an oxymoron. I’m much farther south ( outside of Ottawa ) but we get a few good and cold nights. Even with 70s era machines we did not have much problem starting in the cold. we would break out the ether at times - maybe carry a can, I would hate to see you stuck if you run down your power pack. Not something you want to use regularly but as a backup.

About starting the engine below -30°: Turn the key to spin the crankshaft 2-3 times and cut the power even it seems to fire. Wait 30 seconds to dissipate the small amount o heat in the engine, then turn the key again for 5-6 turns. It won't always fire but again you have to cut for another 30 seconds, the battery have to settle this time. Third time keep the key on until the engine starts or the battery dies. If the battery is in a good shape, it will start.

Basic beer is what i like too. Sometimes a real dark beer. Haven't found an IPA that is enjoyable to drink
