Extreme Heat: "I Can't Breathe" - 111 Degrees w/ No Power for 3 Days in Merida! 

It's finally summer 🌞 here in Trinidad Colorado 75+ and im complaining about the heat. Im praying for all of y'all struggling with heat!

This is why I would never live full time in Merida. Same with Phoenix. Great places, but too hot for me in the summers.

That's why I moved to Bucerias in the Riviera Nayarit just north of Puerto Vallarta because the max temperature is usually no more than 89 to 91 Fahrenheit during the hottest time of year with a cool ocean breeze also. The last week it's been running only 88° and no power outages in this part of Mexico along the middle Pacific coast.

If you have natural gas, get a tri-fuel or duel-fuel generator that will run off of gasoline, natural gas, and/or propane.. but natural gas is the way to go if the house is equipped with it already.

I'm on the other side, we had 1 outage for 4 hours. The "spicy" hotels are great for times like this 😅 you can pay by the hour , check in/ out anytime .

I was 21 when I visited Merida and had to fly out to DF. It has been hot all over Queretaro is cool, but it has been 98, but plenty of water and power.. prayers sent.

There were some power outages here in Texas. Storms have been crazy. You have a portable battery for small appliances and like fans and lights. Backup batteries usually will keep the whole house running for a couple days.

Will houses in Merida were constructed differently before with very thick walls, tall ceilings and doors to allow the heat to rise up, houses were kept fresh that way.

A cheap and simple backup battery for a system with solar pannels cost around 20,000 usd in Merida (approximately 320,000 mexican pesos) and that is the cheapest one. Not something everyone can afford and keep in mind it has only a very limited capacity and durability.

Been here in Merida since May '23 and haven't had AC the whole time. This recent heat wave has been really intense. I've been taking like 20 quick showers a day. And too many beers too but the heat. They're saying the pattern is changing with La Nina but that won't be until middle of June. Pray that rain comes soon!

Hey cartess, if you can find a wrecked tesla you can grab the battery out of that to use as a backup battery :) also, you are looking for Lithium batteries. 100 amp hour or more, you will need to buy several of those and connect them together. you will also need a charge controller and and inverter to change the power from 12 or 24 volt... to house voltage. at least enough to power 1 air conditioner and your refrigerator 😉

Here's a trick that I learned from a long-time Merida resident ... put a floor fan on full blast, and a ceiling fan on full blast, and keep your windows open. Her home was designed with brick walls that did not finish at the roof line. Old Hacienda style mansion. The floor fan pushes up the hot air and pushes it outside. It actually works ... along with sitting still and drinking a cold beverage!! Good Luck!

I’m used to summers being over 115 from living in Los Angeles but I’m not used to the humidity…how would I do in Merida? I’m visiting Costa Maya and Cozumel on a cruise for my birthday at the end of the month, wonder what type of weather I’ll get there. I went in September of 2022 and it was hot and humid but i was okay, but didn’t go outside much aside from port days. Didn’t really get to use my balcony because of the heat, but didn’t get upgraded this time. It does sound frustrating that the generators are so expensive. Does the power go out very often there? Thanks for making these videos for all of us hopefuls to move abroad one day. Your backyard / pool looks so nice! The trees and the plants are so pretty 😍 it’s like a resort!

Buenos Tardes, Cartess y Familia. I noticed most RU-vidrs in my stream are talking about the intense heat and power outages in the Merida area. My homebase is in Colorado Springs and here, it snowed yesterday and a little bit today mixed with rain. I plan on visiting Mexico in the wintertime ... but this year, I'm visiting San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Ya'll stay hydrated and enjoy the swimming pool. Take Care & God Bless.

I imagine the electric bills are high in Merida. I previously lived in Cabo San Lucas where it is also hot and humid. Moved to Cholula Puebla where I do not need ac or heat. Saving bank.

the only time solar is worth it is if you have a stand alone system with batteries and a generator:) We had that in Hawaii and it works well but we don't have that kind of heat either. You just convinced me NOT to move to Merida:) I was just thinking about it today after watching your older video and I said what if the power goes out, how will doggie and I survive? and here you are:) where I live if the power goes out doesn't matter bc it is mild or chilly (but not cold) year round.

Great public service announcement. My first experience with the first week of June cemented my never being able to survive living there full time. Asthmatic here. High heat & dry=no problemo. High heat & high humidity = I really Could.Not.Breathe. Had to leave. Or die, basically. People need to know that May 15-Sept 30 is pretty unbearable...Sept rains bring October mosquitoes...so for me,,, Nov - end of March is fine.

That happens here in Hocaba too, where some areas will have power and the others won't! Ughh! Normally it seems to be my area without power. One time the power was out from night until about 2 pm the next day! It takes a lot of mental strength! 🤣 These kinds of things I think happen mostly in villages/small towns. Like Hocaba, maybe Conkal, etc. Happened when I lived in Homun too. Power out all day once or twice. It didn't happen when I lived in different parts of Merida. Only once in Chelem.

I know that you would like to build a house there, solar panels are great to have from what I hear as long as you have batteries to store the power. My father-in-law has a whole house generator that turns on within seconds of the power going out ($5,000 in Michigan). Obviously a portable generator would be ideal in your current situation, enough to keep the fridge running, and fans or a mini-split. I would imagine that your pool isn't refreshing when it's that hot out either. I'm glad you are hanging tough!

Look into Cholula, Puebla. It's 2 hours outside Mexico City and in the mountains. There is an active volcano, and very few English speakers, but it has a milder climate and is a very cool town.

Lol! You've just described my reason to pick the end of May to the middle of June to visit Merida, México. Which the warmest months in Merida. To see if it is similar to coastal Georgia weather. It is similar. That said, I'm staying in El Centro where I'm within walking distance to several good restaurants, and parks, especially after sunset. Mercado San Benito is also nice. So far, Merida seems doable. But, it's only been 2 days out of 21days. Time will tell. 😅

Forecast highs for the for the next seven days in Merida is between 101 to 107F. For the same period in Cancun it will average 89 to 91F. I'll only ever go to Merida during winter. Go get that generator. Thanks for the heads up Cartess.

In Florida I saw a real feel off 117 a few different times. At least I had power for air conditioning. That sounds a little too rough for me. 6000 ft in Ecuador sounds better to me.

When I used to live in South America, I would use a plastic cover for the bed and sleep and wet clothes with the fan. It would keep me cool so I could sleep all night. Or I would run two large fans. 😅

Interesting, an acquaintance lives in a privada in Conkal and their transformer was down two days ago.

a) Most long term gringos in Mexico live in the mountains. b) Best use for your daytime solar power is running a fan. This reduces the Apparent Heat that your body feels by 5-10 degrees. c) Sleep in your birthday suit, under the fan, in the afternoon. In real hot places, like Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, where I used to live, a significant percentage of my neighbors were Entirely Nocturnal. So keep Vampire Hours.

Yes, you need a battery bank for solar to hold power. Basically, having solar without power storage is useless (imo) You are also correct, solar is generally not meant to power entire house, it a emergency thing, ie a/c in 115 degree weather and cpap. The necessities. You can however get something like a Tesla power wall, large enough to run house. The type of solar you explained, where you share with the grid, are a ripoff, they may reduce bill, but they are pretty useless when in an emergency (unless you have some sort of power storage). I want all of my power for myself and family. However, companies like Ecoflow makes portable solar air conditioners which will cool at least a single room. I have a portable solar generator for something like my cpap. It will run for about 24 hours without charging, depending on load. If needed, I could use my portable solar panels to charge it back the next day. Mine is a Bluetti, but my next one will be EcoFlow. While looking for a generator, I would focus on a dual fuel generator, they can take gasoline, or propane.

It's true the backup batteries don't last long. I've seen a cellphone company and internet company that will have a room with about 50 batteries the size the of a car battery. And it keeps the system on for 15 min so people don't lose service. It's just enough to kick up the generators. They have big diesel generators. But they make small generators. That could be the answer is buying a small generator. I have an A/C converter for my cordless drill battery and it will power my laptop or charge my phone for a couple hours. It would work on a cpap machine but definitely not an air conditioner.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to take a pass on living in Merida. When "regular hot" is "just" 102 or 103 degrees and with high humidity on top of that, I know that's not the place for me!

It wont get better. It will get worse year after year. Asia (Thailand) and all other tropical locations will experience increasingly dangeorus heat waves and outages. Climate effect in action. People really are not prepared for this. It might be manageable in places like Aruba that have constant trade winds blowing through them
