Extreme heat is getting worse. Can we learn to live with it? | The Excerpt

May 2024 marked the twelfth straight month of record-high temperatures for the planet. Here in the U.S., temperatures across the country are likely to break records again this summer, increasing health risks to those spending long periods outdoors - from construction workers to migrants illegally crossing the border. Government and business leaders have long struggled to cope with protecting people from the heat. Kathy Baughman McLeod, founder and CEO of Climate Resilience for All, a non-profit dedicated to protecting vulnerable communities from extreme heat, joins The Excerpt to explain how people should prepare for a hotter world. tinyurl.com/3hajx3kj

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

Always missing from these conversations are the real calls to action. We are not going to air condition or cold water bottle our way out of this. Vote, vote, vote. Demand a workable public transportation system. Support politicians who are not in the pockets of big oil. Seek out politicians who understand and are serious about curbing emissions (they're are not many, but encourage them). Systematicaly vote out all of the others.

there's nothing to DO, it's already in motion
@Off_the_clock_astrophysicist
@Off_the_clock_astrophysicist 9 дней назад
@@alsamil6716 It is in motion, but it's not true that there is nothing to do. There is a simple plan. 1) stop piling CO2 into the atmosphere. 2) meanwhile, start reflecting some of that incoming sunlight back into space, and 3) work on removing CO2. We used to do number 2 but stopped when we cleaned up our air. A good thing for lungs, but that also unveiled the true magnitude of the warming. We can release particulates high up in the atmosphere, were no-one will be breathing them in. Number 2 gives me no joy, but that's where we are. Number 3 takes longer and is costly, making number 2 necessary at this juncture. The reason we are where we are is because we (by "we" I mean the oil industry - who dictate the game) never seriously worked on number 1, and hoped that number 3 would allow us to burn all the fossil fuel we wanted (the "net zero" we keep hearing about). We need to stop talking about "net zero" and instead aim for "zero", and fast.

Were going to be in for some really high temps. Just realize if the world keeps getting hotter and dosent regulate the temps we could see 150. The earth we love so much doesn't care if we live or die. Take any ocean for example, its beautiful but if you swim out to far and get in a rip current youll probably drown all the while knowing you want to live very much. 135°f has already been reached, the oceans are getting hot in some areas, you have to do the math for yourself here. Look at temps around the globe. In 5 years we may be seeing millions trying to migrate north.

@@JamesCurcio "Talk" is the _only_ thing that finally moves the needle. If one person buys an EV or votes for politicians that support the energy transition, then it's just that: one person. However, if that one person influenced a friend, family member, neighbor, co-worker to do same then he's multiplied his efforts. This all is magnified many times over in connections and distance by the internet. In a larger context, humans are the most communicative species on the planet. Fighting back against fossil fuel interests will be a global collaborative effort. We also need to be aware that next to mother nature, there is no more powerful force on Earth than the global fossil fuel industry because of their massive profits and political influence. Many high-ranking politicians are shamelessly in the pocket of fossil fuel interests. For instance, Greg Abbot and Daniell Smith to name a few. So no. Talk certainly will be able to move the needle and might ultimately be the only thing that does.

A/C is poor excuse to cause more emissions and make situation even worse. Also human body adapts a bit on higher temperatures, but using A/C means, there is no adaptation. And if electricity then finally crashes due to extreme usage during heatwave (you also use most pollutive electric plants too), the population is almost immediately under heat that they have not been prepared. No water from tap. Heat is coming inside your house in hours/few days. No fridges or freezers. ... And you have no plans how to survive under this heat. This rises immediate death toll.

I don´t criticize people who use a/c to survive extreme heat but extensive use of a/c does two things: 1) it makes future heatwaves more intense by increasing carbon emissions and 2) it transfers that future excess heat from rich countries/social classes to poorer countries and poorer people who do not have access to a/c. "Heat-proofing" cities and using green energy would reduce the negative effects of using a/c but humanity is not there yet (although time is running out).

@@jimmyf9545 Here are the facts rather then whatever your TV tells you is the truth: Data from NOAA's Climate Reference Network shows no sustained increase in daily high temperatures in the United States since 2005 when that network began. In recent decades in the United States, heat waves have been far less severe than they were in the 1930s. At that time Heatwaves were more than 6 times worse with greater frequency, duration, and covering a larger area than the last decade (EPA). The most severe heatwave year was 1936, and was about 13 times worse than current. This year only 4 US states have achieved higher temperatures than 1936. Many states in 1936 achieved temperatures 15° hotter than the present. The all-time high temperature records set in most states occurred in the first half of the twentieth century. So far in 2024 the percentage of US Historical Climatology Network Stations reaching or exceeding 95°F (35°C) is at a record low (1895-2024) of 51%. The record high was 1931 at 93%. Do some research on what is happening to the jet stream and you might understand.
@beyondfossil
@beyondfossil 11 дней назад
Wait until the Jetstream moves northwards and gets stuck there for a week or more, then Scandinavian countries will be sweltering. This is what happened in British Columbia in June 2021, and it was an epic event "BC heat dome 2021". In the larger context, this all falls in line with climate change extremes where weather patterns move between extremes: (a) more frequently and (b) more wide ranges. The increasing volatility caused by an extra 39-billion metric tons of fossil fuel carbon pulled from deep within the Earth's crust and pumped into the atmosphere *every year* gives more energy and moisture to the atmosphere. This can really disrupt the Jetstream and ocean currents. Look at the increase in air travel turbulence too that injures people and diverts flights. The atmosphere is now over 422-ppm CO2 concentration which hasn't occurred on Earth in over 4-million years dating back to the Pliocene era. But all of it happening in just 200-years since the start of the Industrial Age when humans really started burning fossil fuels at industrial scale. 200-years is just a fraction of a blink of an eye in geological time scales which is what climate change should be happening in so that the biosphere has a chance to adapt. As it is, even humans aren't able to adapt at such short climate change scales.
@Off_the_clock_astrophysicist
@Off_the_clock_astrophysicist 11 дней назад
Yes, i was going to say. Technically, it's not the Jet Stream, it's the AMOC (of which the Jet Stream is a component). The shutting down of the AMOC starts with sweltering summers in lower Europe, and continues with a big differential between Scandinavia and Southern Europe. Like something we've never seen before. We don't know exactly what that's going to do, but one would expect violent storms, as temperature gradients drive winds. In Scandinavia, without the AMOC, temperatures will be depressed by 20 degrees Celsius (yes). You're in for a ride. People thought this might be in store for the next century, but it's already started. Right now, climatologists say that it will take at least a century or so for the AMOC to shut down, but given how crazy things have been, I wouldn't put all my money on that.
