I'm thinking ETTR is probably going to be my go-to for low light. I think it's going to work far better for where I live.

I was lucky enough to live a few years in Mwanza (Tanzania). This is less than 2 hours from the western gate of the Serengeti. I would do day trips, leaving at around 4 in the morning (tricky, because driving at night is not allowed and there are roadblocks, but if you explain where you're heading they normally would let you through). If the gate staff was quick enough I could sometimes enter the park before sunrise and position myself at some trees with baboons in them and wait for the morning red to appear in the sky. This gave the opportunity for some fantastic silhouette photos.

Spray and pray is my absolute go to. And if I’m not happy with my photos, at least there’s usually someone around to go “oooh that’s a fancy camera!” and be impressed with my shutter sounds to make me feel a little better 😂 I also like ignoring that I need to breathe, and holding awkward positions so tightly that I pull muscles. Worth it for the shot!

I shoot Micro Four Thirds, so these situations will be all the more challenging. But advanced tools like Topaz Photo AI often help save the day. Thanks for showing how "overexposing" a dark image gives better results than boosting a lower ISO image.

This is the best video on this topic anywhere I have seen. Very nicely done! I dont have a special tip, except to repeat that taking many shots at a slower shutter speed can result in capturing some great dynamic movement with birds, even if details are blurred. Of course stabilizing the camera is still critical, even though the final photo is less sharp, because you need all the sharpness you can get.

I came to photography while being an automotive journalist. On my first day at the magazine, they gave me a 250k+ exposure Canon EOS 700D with a kinda working 18-135 kit lens and no instructions. It took me years to get ok at photography, even if I was doing it every day. Now, years later it's not even a debate, that I am the best photographer working at the same magazine, and all I needed was to find out most of the techniques you show in your videos on my own, trial and error style. I found your channel some weeks ago, and I still learn a lot here. I've seen enough to confirm, that this content is golden. I can't even imagine where I'd be right now if I had found your channel when I started. 100% recommend, amazing work.

The bonus tip only applies to Canon cameras. The others (using Sony sensors) are ISO invariant and underexposing + raising in post will look the same as ETTR. And with the NR tools available today, you can shoot at much higher ISO than you mentioned - I have some ISO 12800 photos shot on MFT that look pretty damn amazing.
@wellingtoncrescent2480

Excellent discussion. Maybe I'm compromising, but with a crop sensor Canon R7, I routinely allow the AutoISO to range up to 3200, and I'm happy to go to 6400 if required. And with de-noising software, even ISO 12800 can yield acceptable images.

The final image is the best real world example, and not just a test rig that i have come across proving high iso doesn’t necessarily mean high noise.

Some very good information here, thank you. My trick is fix the shutter, fix the aperature, and set auto-iso, letting the iso be whatever it needs to be. (Nikon D5) Shoot raw, and fix the highlights and noise in post. As you said, it doesn't matter if the ISO is low if you have motion blur. Speaking of which, I don't recall you mentioning this, but in tricky light situations, it's vital that you shoot raw. You can do much more with a raw image in post than you can a jpg. I also tend to expose bright, and occasionally I overdrive the highlights, which tends to bleed a bit (at least on my monitor) and give the impression of blur. I've noticed that exposing bright but dialing down the highlights slightly can make some photos look sharper. Not too much, or the photo looks dull. I'm also a big fan of "pre-loading" your autofocus, by focusing on an object the appropriate distance before the subject comes into frame. I have a Topaz license, but recently went back to Lightroom's AI driven noise reduction. It seems to work well enough that I don't bother with Topaz anymore. Again, good article. Lots of good information.

I think that understanding "equivalence" is very important and useful in low light. Thus, in the usual depth-of-field limiting conditions, one should be using a numerically smaller f-stop and lower ISO with small sensor cameras that larger sensor cameras. For example, under the same situation one should be using f/4 and ISO 1600 with a Micro 4/3 camera, and f/8 and ISO 6400 with a full frame camera. Both cameras will achieve the same "look" - depth-of-field - and similar noise levels for comparable sensor vintages/technologies.

While technically accurate, in extreme low light like a music concert or dark wedding reception, one wouldn’t use a full frame camera with stopped down aperture, so it doesn’t really work out that way in practice most of the time.

When shooting in bad light I use pixel peeking . Auto foucs does not always work. Also you can work out what is in foucs . But my biggest tip is don’t wait till you’re on holiday to try to learn your equipment. I have the 180/600z for the last 8 weeks when I have time I have spent time trying to work out how it preforms in low light how it performs best for me .I shoot on manual so I get to know what works for me. The last tip is to release the camera is a machine, it does not have moods that bits tells you more about you than your equipment. ISO need not always have to be so high has you think . Light room gives a lot of light power if you know how to use it correctly. So really practice makes perfect. Kind off trade off. I live 15 mins away from a local park . It’s as a pound and wild life there. I have loads of photos of geese ducks gulls and dogs. I plan to expand my collection of course however for now a fast moving duck or geese in flight allow me to work out what works for me gives me hands on practical experience of my gear. Horses or the local deer seagull or Golden eagle same skill factor for capture for all So be a Boy Scout and learn your equipment . It pays you practice

Expose to the right if you want high ISO delight! One additional technique I have used with good results, specifically thinking of taking photos of forest mushrooms, which is where I encounter some of my lowest light situations, is use a wider angle lens in place of a longer lens. I use a Canon 35mm f/2 IS lens with a 12mm tube to knock down the MFD a bit so I can get a little closer. It might be a bit of an unusual use for that kind of lens, but it has made for a pretty good low light set up for forest mushrooms, even in the darkest hemlock grove. I could get sharp results with lower shutter speeds than I could with my 100mm macro lens and I preferred the wider perspective. But I'm not sure there'd be much application for that, using a wider angle lens in place of a longer lens, outside of something like forest mushrooms.

There is clearly a direct relationship between high ISO and noise, generally. I am always pleasantly surprised when I capture a tack sharp image with a relatively high ISO and don’t always necessarily understand why. Good video.

Very usefull. I've been struggling using my sony a6400 and sigma 100-400 f5.6-6.3 to take photos of parrots (even at iso 2500 it is very ordinary). Mainly because they are coming out in these low light scenarios. They also match the backgrounds they are often in at the moment here. Taking photos while they are on a perch, not the ground is helping, but in flight, it is difficult. I'll certainly use some of these tips to improve.

Once again, Simon, THANK YOU! I actually learned something useful from this video (which is a habit while watching your content). In particular, I had never heard of exposing to the right. Once you say it aloud it is obvious and makes perfect sense (instead of clipping off the left, push the whole compressed histogram over to the right, where there is plenty of room! duh!). Thanks for the outstanding content and continued encouragement!

Great info about ISO and noise. I rarely shoot wildlife, mainly landscape and architecture, and tend to make as few exposures as possible. Get out of my head!😀😀 I just spent a dreary rainy morning shooting at ISO 3200 practicing holding the camera steady and shooting between showers. It was so much work I transferred the files and decided to wait and process the files. I know it's not popular today but I needed time to think! I haven't decided on a high ISO low light denoise application yet so I'm glad to see your Topaz images. Being trained with rifle techniques I apply counter pressure and rests to stabilize the camera and lens. I utilize various techniques to enhance color and contrast. It's a trial and error process as more radical curves and other settings can be detrimental to background noise.

Your comment, "what does that matter" regarding ISO and dynamic range is hugely important. It's too easy for people to get fixated on the numeric details of something (not just photography!) and forget the resultant product. After all, many of the bert artists never had tools that would even tell them that info! So you probably don't need it either in many cases.

I have always thought the 'advice' to keep the ISO low is conditional. I try to keep the ISO low but I have no problem with it being 'high' if that allows me to get the shot. Also, 'pray and spray' is often denigrated because many are not shooting in very low light situations.

The only low-light technique I have is praying. I can't do it, no matter how hard I try. I've watched your other videos on high ISOs. But the tips in this video on how to deal with high ISOs might do the trick. I hope so. This is driving me crazy.

my tip: make sure you get enough sleep. For many people having too much caffeine can make them shaky or jittery, but anyone who's pulled all nighters before and doesn't drink caffeinated stuff can still attest to the fact that a lack of sleep leaves your body shaky when trying to remain still. a few times ive had very little sleep and when trying to shoot handheld at lower shutter speeds i just can't hold still for the life of me. heart rate goes up, arms get shaky.

My gear is 10+ years old (6D/7D) but I still never fear pushing up to ISO 1600+ on the 6D and ISO 800 on the 7D (though I only use the 7D for summer sports/events stuff). Noisy shot or no shot... I can always use Topaz to do a clean up. Most non camera folks really don't notice too much anyway.

I might try to light the wildlife. For exAmple, put a little meat out with a small light-constant or flash- on the ground next to it for some drama shots? Just a thought.

I'm so glad that I stumbled onto your YT site. I'm just getting back into photography again after an overlong lapse. Question: I have a fine Nikon D-3300, a cheaper body but the processor in it, as I learn, is "borrowed" from a much more expensive Nikon DSLR. I need a reasonably priced new lens for all around general work, something like the better kit lens that Nikon used to offer with their D-70 and D-200, albeit new and improved if possible. I have a fair 10-20 and a middling zoom. Can you recommend a decent mid-range zoom, say maybe like a range to cover 24to 70mm or so? Thank you, Sir. Any advice here welcome!

Thanhks for you videos on this. I just got back from my safari. I ran inbtoa problem with my Canon SX 70 which is my budget wildlife camera. It has a small sensor but when I use it correctly I almost never crop. It has excessive noise reduction so I shoot mostly in compressed raw. I have other caeras and I use JPEG most of the time on most of them. As per your advice I shot in raw with auto ISO and encountered a problem which I perhaps you might also encounter. After taking multiple shots the camera need some time to clear its buffer. I waw trying to get the last from a dying battery. The battery died evidently before the camera cleared its buffer. The result was that the SD card was in accessible. I had another card so I just it in and the camera worked OK and the inaccessible still had the phots when I opened it for post processing. It happened a second time and again I had another SD card. The take away is that when you Canon says to change the battery, do it!! don't try yo get the last bit. I also suggest taking several SD cards. Does this problem occur with the pro grade Canon bodies? The SX 70 got some very nice shots but nothing near competitive with you wonderful work

I find that my A7iv can focus much better using Single-Shot AF compared to Continuous AF in very low light.

I found same for older camera bodies, but my recent ones no different. This is camera-specific I expect.

It sounds silly, but in low light conditions and trying to get photos where natural lighting or natural looking lighting isn't the most important, I always like to use Camera Flash + Flashlight on my phone from a different angle to help lighten up a scene.

Hi Simon. Great video again. 👍 I have however a question. I have now two camera's: The Sony FX-3, which is a 12 MP compact cinema camera with two base ISO's of 640 and 12800. I also have a Sony A7 IV, which is a more normal photo camera with a 33 MP sensor. What would be the preferred camera to shoot low light photo's? Normally the FX3 should be able to go lower but it is missing some photo related features like burst shooting.
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 6 месяцев назад
I made a video on this topic. In short, your fx-3 will look cleaner, but your A7 IV, after noise reduction to make it look as clean as the FX-3, will still have more detail left. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QW_Q8YMex_w.htmlsi=oQGQx90OXr8gPTUm
