While staying in Hakuba we jump at the chance to do a tough day hike through the Japanese Alps. Our host brings us to the trailhead and we climb through the clouds to meet another world above. The route is stunning and we remember our love for being out in the high mountains once again. We notice we never get ahead of the itinerary and that makes us barely take any breaks. Our hiking unfitness becomes apparent and we somehow have to keep moving to make it to the last gondola that can take us back to the village of Hakuba down in the valley. All but the worst happens and we find ourselves limping down when the darkness sets in...
