I've watched so many videos from Russia and this is what they do most of the time. They repot the bottom part of the healthy stem which grows nicely as well as the top!

I did a mass Phal reporting last week and cut back a few long stems.... there was something oddly therapeutic about it and I don’t think phals mind.. in some ways I feel the ‘trauma’ stimulates root growth earlier. I’ve never kept the bottom stem to promote keiki though! What a fun experiment!!

Very informative video. I have a phalonopsis Japonica xprisia that lost all of its roots three years ago. I put some sphagnum moss and tied it to a piece of wood and just watered it for three weeks as normal. The leaves were quite healthy but there were no roots. After a feweeks i saw signs of root growth and after a month i had few nice roots ! I couldn't believe my eyes! I was so excited that i could save my little phal hybrid. Now it's got lots of healthy roots, but refuses to bloom for me. So my next challenge is to get it to bloom. Thanks for sharing your experience with us and happy growing.

Thank you for the information on apical dominance(sp?)....that is something I would like to learn more about....it is encouraging to see you can chop the stem and save or promote health in a phalaenopsis. I saw another orchid grower doing this with vandas and this is new information for me....awesome video!

Hi BB. I have cut the occasional Phal seem if it was very long but haven’t tried propagation yet. The orchids I do cut though are Cattleyas. If the rhizome is severed while still potted, it makes the orchid send shoots out in areas that wouldn’t normally grow again. Then later down the track when it’s repotted there are two plants with new growth.

VERY informative. I have an orchid which I paid $5 for in early 2018. It had just completed blooming and had only two shriveled flowers remaining. I immediately repotted it and placed it in what remains its own spot to this day. It is in desperate need of repotting since it has grown leggy and the bottom leaves are now starting to die. Problem is, it has not stopped blooming - since 2018!! It has been in some stage of bloom for that many years often shooting off a dying bloom sprig. I need to cut the bottom off and really don't want to kill this plant but keep waiting, and waiting, for the right time... Any advice??

If you wet the roots first they become more flexible and less likely to crack

One simple tip: the root would be less possible to crack if You wetted these roots before repotting. It would be more flexible - from my experience :) I understand it's extremely hard to do anything while handling camera at the same time. And that cinnamon powder is very helpful with the stem wounds, but be carefoul with the healthy alive roots as it may cause severe drought in these points where it shouldn't. I wonder if it dried afterwards as I wrote. I hope You don't mind this little chit-chat of mine :) Greetings :)

Wow! I have about 40 orchids in my home but only 2 phaleanopsis because I've killed at least a dozen of them and you have one in the same cup and medium for 9 years and it's alive and doing well. I now live in northern Italy and I've found that my winter is too cold for them. It also seems that they thrive on neglect and people like me who are "mother hens" probably do more bad than good.... how often do you water and feed yours, and do you soak them or just pour water through them?

It can be a good idea to water the roots before you begin to wrestle it into the pot, it makes them a little more flexible when they are properly hydrated. 😅 I separated a basal keiki from the mother plant this summer. This was mostly an attempt to save the mother plant since she had gotten severly dehydrated - it was like the keiki sucked up all of the nutrients and wasn't leaving anything for the mother plant, so she was slowly dying. The mother plant has since sprouted a new keiki for me and as long as the mother orchid looks good, I don't think I'll separate them. Last year's keiki still has trouble establishing a proper root system, it is however not dehydrated and it does have more roots (and longer roots) than when I potted it, but for sure it would have benefitted from staying with the mother plant to develop its roots more. But given the circustances the little family is doing well, both the mother the 1-year old and the new 1 month old keiki. 😊 I am trying to see if I can get another orchid to flower again or maybe produce a keiki on the last flower spike. It is however a new project I started this week, so there is no results showing yet. I am super excited but I am going to have to arm me with a great deal of patience. 🤪 Maybe I'll see some results around christmas or early next year. 😇

I have watch hundreds of videos and spent hours upon hours of research on the phal. orchid species... May i just say to anyone that is starting an orchid garden, PLEASE refer yourself to The Orchid Lady's videos instead. She is very lucky that plant was able to live through the trauma she exposed it to.The following is a list of what I would refer to as POOR FORM / Technique: + She could have simply cute through the plastic water bottle prior to cutting sections of the plant free, infection or not, this would be less traumatic to the plant in general. +Orchid grower's should ONLY use sterilized equipment, not MAYBE sterilized rusty garden sheers. Yes - orchids are remakrably resiliant HOWEVER , if you are capable of limiting trauma to the plant, then please limit trauma. + The Video's gardener broke SO many of those roots when all she needed to do was mist them with wter or soakthe plant prior to cutting and repotting. When the roots especially the Air roots are moist and green they are more flexible and less likely to break. Also wearing gloves and getting A TRIPOD so yopu don't have to work ONE HANDED is optimal if you're planning to do a tutorial. +She wasn't certain that she actually sterilized the blade prior to cutting.
