Extreme sailing on the west coast of Norway the day after hurricane "Tor" swept over most of the country.
This is one of the most demanding conditions I've been in so far and I loved every minute of it.
Hope this inspires you to strech your limits just a little more then you did yesterday, whatever youre doing- I promise you its worth it :)

Dear Erik. Love your videos!!! Quick question from a wannabe sailor... I see you're sailing in quite rough waters, and you're only sailing with the jib (I believe that is what its called), and only half unfurled. How fast can the wind move you? It looks like you are going very fast... and all by wind power only. Also love your tag line: NBJS!!!

If you're going out in strong winds when beating, you need a hanked on working jib not a furling genoa rolled in 70%, it looks shit especially if you film it :)

Love your V-blogs! This is what I want in the near future. I was in the Navy for three years in my 20s and I always wanted to go back to the ocean. Your videos show the challenges of sailing. And I love the way you use multiple cameras that covers the actions. Great choices of music too!

I sufered a bit because of the deformation the furling genoa can get in those conditions. I used to own a 26 ft and installed an extra stay for rigging a storm jib or rough jib. You should consider that. I saw your other videos... awsome!!!

Good reason to make sure your head sail furling line is strong! That line letting go would be a disaster.

That is a very good point and one I had not thought of before in my own sailing. This is why I read the comments! Good argument for a storm jib (aside from the other benefits).

man I think you're gonna need more backstay tension if you plan on loading up the headsail like that. From the masthead view you can see the forestay literally bending and kinking under load. From someone who's had a headfoil explode from poor tension, definitely keep that sucker tight.

@matthiafox

Boy, you definitely have balls of steel. But you should seriously consider learning some basics of safety. Soloing in 30+ with no tether, an open companionway, no storm jib... Don't tease Neptune too much, his sense of humor is pretty bad. Live long and go on with your passion.

Erik, great video, what was the sea state as the camera always make it look smaller than it actually is, and they looked quite big. Really enjoyed it.
@tombennison7571

Just awful - the conditions, I mean. Another stirring video I missed first time round. The masthead shots really give an indication I think of the stresses put on Tessie in these conditions. Your mother refers to your yacht as "a steady old lady" but she seems immensely capable to me. You are not the only person to put a Contessa 35 successfully into a Force 10, though I hope you never discover her limit.
@DavidTangye
@DavidTangye 7 лет назад
Those camera shots from the mast looking down at the headsail highlight how poorly furling headsails perform. It is incredibly baggy especially near the head, so it's pulling the yacht over badly, and not driving it forward very well at all.

He wasn´t losing sight of the horizon in the troughs so likely he wasn´t in a gale, good example though that if you aren´t comfortable managing near hurricane weather, stay away from offshore sailing. Otherwise you will need a steady mind.

nice view from the top! honestly I don't think your genua will do that a long time... we also were lazy many times just using parts of genua, but they aren't supposed to. they don't like these sort of forces on areas the weren't strengthened. Ours was clearly suffering from these actions, and got replaced few years ago. if you want to keep your genua a long time, try to use a storm-genua under these conditions... other than that, great sailing! cheers

II have never understood why on sail boats they don't make safety rails in such a way it would be impossible to slide, fall, be thrown through and make them up about 6 feet high. What would it hurt to do this and I wonder how many sailors lives it would save? That's my fear right there, falling off and not being able to catch the boat and sinking like a rock.
@goosedundee13
@goosedundee13 7 лет назад
Everything has to be low as possible on a yacht for the sails and boom, plus u don't want the wind drag, it's all about aerodynamics, even hanging your washing out on the rails would slow u down a bit. look again at Erics boat n c how low n streamlined she is. When they get bulkier they just become cruisers n not too seaworthy. plus u don't want ur vessel top heavy just incase she's rolled over by a big wave, then you would wish u had a boat like Eriks with hardly anything on the deck. But the rule is if the water gets a bit choppy to where it might make you slip, you should be clipped on to a jackstay so that u cannot fall overboard.
