This edited version of my Irish Sea crossing during Storm Eunice is in case you didn't want to watch my (full length) version which can also be found on this playlist.
Filmed aboard Irish Ferries vessels Ulysses from Dublin to Holyhead and Blue Star 1 from Rosslare Europort to Pembroke Dock, this footage shows the severity of Storm Eunice which hit the UK on 18 February 2022, just days after Storm Dudley and shortly before Storm Franklin.
Passing the Stena Line vessels Stena Nordica and Stena Adventurer, we see the huge waves and massive swells the storm created.
Arrival in Holyhead aboard the giant Ulysses we see the waves ploughing over the breakwater then, suddenly, the huge cruise ferry lists to port - viewed from her Club Class Lounge above the ships' bridge, the horizon can be seen disappearing above and below her floor to ceiling windows as the ship tries to righten herself.
Eventually rounding the jetty towards her berth, Storm Eunice is recorded at reaching 83knots (95mph) essentially "pinning the ferry to the jetty" - as per Captain's announcement. Unable to move ahead or astern, we remain in this position for several hours until the wind abates.
Meanwhile, Stena Adventurer arrives from Dublin. Cautiously entering the harbour, Storm Eunice 'grabs' her and pushes her sideways towards the jetty. Passengers aboard Ulysses watch as a (tiny) tug tries to swing the Stena ferry.
Deciding to abort the manoeuvre, Stena Adventurer heads back out to sea (the safest place to be when a storm hits).

Ah that's a mere ripple!, the Irish Sea has more than that offer, I was one of four passengers that had to be airlifted off the MV Riverdance in January 2018 off the Lancashire coast after the ferry was broadsided by a freak wave and nearly capsized leaving her without power in a permanent list after the cargo shifted . Lost my then beloved BMW but fck the car I was grateful to be alive thanks to the superhuman skills of the rescue crew of RAF Valley who where rightly commended by the Queen for that rescue after mother nature threw everything at them. I'll never be able to repay the debt to those brave airmen not only for my life but risking their own to save it.

Made many a crossing in my youth between Holyhaed and Dun Loaghaire on the MV HIBERIAN and the MV CANBRIA in the 50,s 60,s, on several occasions you were not allowed on deck and on a couple of occasions we spent the night in train carrages at the ports because the weather was to rough to sail but i loved every minuet of the voyages,it was such an adventure for a young lad.

I made the same journey a few years ago during a storm. Had to transfer from a different ferry as Ulysses was the only one running. Had the waves against the windows and the occasional smashing crockery sounds. A memorable crossing with a first class crew.

I was aboard HMS Glasgow in st Lucia in the Caribbean in 1980. When hurricane Allen hit the islands we had to sail immediately as it’s far safer at sea. The damage on land was incredible. Stenna did the right thing.

Well, sometimes to be fair, it’s less of a ‘shall I travel’ and more of a ‘no weather improvement expected, can’t afford the plane’. A lot of pills (& some sneaking outside when nobody is looking for some mild relief). A family member can’t fly…. I do not ferry. But hers is more serious than mine so FOUR hours of the toilet floor at least takes your mind off the sliding around problem. Get a good flat stomach, with a six pack extra muscles from clinging on if you’re lucky. For me, the worst ferries are the ones where they hand each passenger a paper bag upon boarding. And they have the wet flannels ready to go. I just take six bags and ask where I can get more. The truckers think I’m hilarious, so I make someone’s day.

In November 1965 I came back from Canada on a cargo ship - my first trip as a Cadet in the MN - in a force 10 storm that stayed with the ship all the way. You had to tie yourself into your bunks when you slept and the only hot food available was Tea and toast! The ship was about half the size of these ferries.................

Not gonna lie, if I was on that stena and they announced back out to sea, in that storm, I would freak out 😂😂 I’m a regular on Stenaline .. Cairnryan to Belfast and have been on some scary trips, but never one that has gone back out cos they can’t dock.

Interesting video. It's usually safer for a vessel to be at sea in such conditions rather than trying to dock. The biggest risk is losing control due to the wind and impacting land which would be disastrous. Captain's know what they're doing. A very good video capturing the storm, thanks for sharing.

@@damienhill6383 Sadly the ''British Rail'' Ferries before that, too... The dreadful ''Princess Victoria'' Disaster of 1953... I never had heard of this , until it was 'Recommended' by YT. A very good radio podcast about it, featuring survivors is on here. The Captain and young radio operator, David Broadfoot went down with their Ship, the radio operator was awarded posthumous George Cross for Bravery. He'd stayed at his post, transmitting their position as they drifted, until being trapped by the sea {Had he opened his office door, all he'd have seen was black ocean, due to the list. He transmitted until he died. The ship should never have put to sea in such a severe storm. 'Bravado' ? The Captains felt pressured by their bosses, but ultimately , should have said ''NO''.

Was kinda scary...on the other side off Brittain and in France the channel ferries where kept all berthed. Smartest decision in my opinion instead off surfing huge steal elephants in force 10 gail ....

Mum said on some of the tiny Ferries of the 1950's/60's, it was often a case of ''Waiting it out'' until the weather eased before the ship could safely Dock. One of the oldskool ferries, 'Falaise' hit a harbour wall a couple of times. She was so say a bit of a tricky ship, and it was on her that I had my most giddying crossing... Truly, I thought it would never end. Was I glad to see the White Cliffs of Dover emerge in a thin pale line through the spray.

I had the dubious pleasure of being in a similar situation in about November 1996. I think the vessel was IF's Isle of Innisfree that had only been in service about 18 months. (My fav vessel of all time the Isle of Inishmore launched a year or so later and Innisfree was sent to Pembroke to Rosslare.) But on that journey we had to stay off Holyhead for nine hours because of the conditions. And I recall that as 'compensation' IF offered a free cooked breakfast to everyone. Although my stomach at that time was just about holding up, it was in no position to receive a cooked full Irish breakfast. But others didn't seem deterred, the queue went right past me and it was a mile long!

Done this in a gale. The only slight problem was that my screaming every time we ‘submarined’ under each huge wave (on the top deck) must have annoyed those on the bridge because we did have to slow down (that and some ominous creaking). We docked relatively easily, I think Holyhead must be on a good wind path. I was surprised how easily we docked, because I’ve spent at least an hour at sea waiting to dock in Calais, with seas only a tenth as rough. But the Irish Sea is notorious, so if you couldn’t dock in heavy winds, you’d never run a ferry service. Apparently it’s only counted as a rough crossing if you have to shelter by the Isle of Man, or the TVs fall off. No lifeboat would ever ever survive out there, so I took strong travel sickness pills and went to sleep. I don’t get travel sick. I just prefer the sea to stay under the ferry. The roll at the end could be where they stop using the stabilisers as they pull in to land. Best not to have sticking out bits. Imagine the journey without them.

That is on Ulysses at 51,000 tonnes. Now imagine that sort of storm on the St Columba at 7800 tonnes or even worse, Avalon at 6500 tonnes. Both of those I crossed on in the 70's in force 9 to 10. As a kid I was utterly oblivious to the risk I suspect :D

@@A2BviaSeaonTV Transderm Scōp is what I need for conditions like this. It definitely helps. Princess Victoria Disaster had some older passengers too prostrated by seasickness to want to move, and then went down with the ship. That must have been awful. Ferries can be dangerous places, and the Crew need to know what they are doing, for sure, hence the worries over the P&O layoffs of experienced Crew recently.

I went to buy some biscuits on a very rough small ferry 'Falaise', as a kid.. the barman said ''AEat them when you get home, dear...You'll only bring them up if you eat them now''....I followed his advice. I felt a bit dizzy, and mum didn't believe in seasick pills. She used power of suggestion ''You ARE a lucky girl! You don't get seasick''...and I believed her. Did get dizzy though. Baby brother vomited all over her, however. Not pleasant.

Ship is hardly moving, it has stabalizers. Try going through a hurricane in a relatively small tanker.

I experienced something like this in January 2015 with the DFDS from Dunkirk to Dover, I sat outside on the deck on a bench that stood in the longitudinal direction of the ship. Especially don't look straight ahead because then you will definitely get seasick! It was quite an experience in itself, but I hope never to experience it again.

We sat hove to off Dover for about 4 hours back in October '87 just before "that" storm, as nothing could get off the berths there. Green seas were breaking on the upper Fwd lounge windows. Very hairy!

I lost my yacht in Holyhead along with 80 others which were behind that sea wall. It's very exposed to the East and North East and this is illustrated well in your video. The waters really should not that be that rough inside the port.

Been on endless ferries to Ireland and back from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire / Dublin and Fishguard to Rosslare, also Swansea to cork. But although 9 out of 10 crossings are fine, when it’s rough it’s bad! One crossing from rosslare to Fishguard was that bad I think in 2011 in an ex hurricane that a lot of the passengers were praying, some crying balling their eyes out, and even some of the crew looked worried even after reassuring everyone. The swells were hitting the boat like a solid brick wall, and the crossing took 3-4 times longer as we barely moved through the Celtic sea. One of those moments you never forget and are thankful to reach land after prayi

We made the crossing in calm (ish) seas - nothing too bad. Was only until we got to Holyhead the winds picked up. If we were 20min early we would have missed the storm. The Stena Adventurer is another matter though

There are so many gales on that sea, no one would ever cross 😰… and the ferries are built to take it. It’s surprising how ‘normal’ everything is inside. The water between the two is so deep, they never had to detour. I’m guaranteeing that there are unbelievably more boats out there in much worse conditions. This is a major supply route, as well as passengers. I think the vast majority of the ship is aimed at lorry drivers. This sea will do this for another week at least. Just because that’s the way the currents and winds go. Look up the ferry from the top of Scotland to Orkney. That is a crazy one.

I've sailed in similar conditions the last time I went to Dublin and I would recommend anyone with sea sickness to go as far to the stern as possible and just lie down and go to sleep! I just found a spot on the floor! It was a horrendous experience! I've also been on the HSS during a storm and at one point the ship went to about 45° and the shop and restaurants came crashing down! It was a miracle we made it back tbh!

I we were at anchor in Holy Head Harbour the nighr the ferry "Princess Victoria" went down with tagic loss of life, especially all the woman & children in the smashed lifeboats

The Irish sea has to be the roughest crossing in the World. Biscay is like a mill pond in comparison. And yes I have travelled both on many occasions. The waters between Ireland and Wales are pretty shallow. The wind funnels up from 3000 miles of open Atlantic. The Welsh coast usually gets the highest winds in the UK . These big ferries cope no problem at all. And funnily enough the rougher it is the better I sleep!

Biscay in the winter is an order of magnitude worse than Irish Sea. Large cruise ships with propellers out of the water gives an idea of the swell.

@@David-lb4te Sorry I beg to differ. I have crossed Biscay many times in Winter. Storm Alex a few years ago was a Force 12. Winds reached 116mph. We were on the ferry Pont Aven or might have been Cap Finistere. Not once did I worry. I have also crossed Biscay in a 48' ketch in Winter. Again not as bad as the Irish Sea. Deep water is a far better place to be in a storm.

Try the North Sea or the waters up near Shetland where the Atlantic meets the North Sea. Now that is a proper rough crossing. That’s where you’ll find the highest waves and strongest winds in the British Isles.

We had a similar experience trying to get off the dock in NL. It took a couple of tugs to pull the bow into the wind to get us away.

So much wrong here. Neither of these vessels should have attempted to dock in conditions where they couldn't maneuver. Sending the tug out was clearly moronic. Both vessels should have stood off until conditions improved. Lives risked to keep a schedule.

Use to be a truck driver for 18 years. Once, took the boat in Stanrear(Scotland) to Belfast with similar weather conditions. My truck moved 10cm, 4 chains were broken. Lots of damage, I remember. Trucks and cars pushed against each other. People and even the crew started to panic. 20 years ago now, but that day I had a good guardian-angel. Not for people with a bad stomach.🤢🤢🤮🤮

Irish Sea certainly knows how to ''Cut up rough'' when she wants! The little kid spinning round in her chair.. clearly doesn't get giddy ! :) A man says ''Choppy today''. 0:35 ish or ...''Flat as a millpond'' as our dad used to day when I worried about rough weather as a child on {Much smaller and rockier} ferries in 1970's. ''Falaise'' was the worst ever crossing I'd done, Dieppe/Folkestone as a kid.

@@A2BviaSeaonTV Haha! re the spinning kid. Yes, the Falaise {1947} I think went to the Greek islands? Might be wrong, she was scrapped, I know that much. It was a miserable crossing. ''Chartres'' was another old one. When we crossed the Irish Sea, the Europe, she got very rolly approaching Fishguard..I wonder if they'd turned the stabilisers off? It was a similar big roll to what you showed.

On my ship departing Dublin the wind hadn't gotten that strong and we came so close to Wales alas, the wind picked up earlier than predicted and caused the delay. I've done the ullapool-stornoway crossing over the minch many times lol. Stormy weather does not deter it, can't tell you how many times I've watched the nose dip below water level but that's very typical of the minch weather which is not for the faint hearted lol. A lot of the time it comes down to how well the crew know the waters. Ullapool-stornoway, tarbet-skye, harris-north uist, south uist-barra; any of these crossings are generally pretty rough because of how exposed they are to the ocean and northern or westerly atlantic winds.
