Having a UPS or Uninterruptible Power Supply for you home network is a great way to protect your gear and save you the hassle of powering everything back on if you ever suffera power loss. In this video, I talk about an extremely affordable option to protect yourself from such an event. And you can be up and running in just minutes.

I should get something like that for my PS4. It hates losing power suddenly.

You sure could. They make non-rack mount options.

Thank you for this video, I just installed the first 4 cameras to my 24 port switch and UDM "Protect" stuck in "starting. Could you give me some advice on how to fix it? Thanks in advance
@ethernetblueprint
@ethernetblueprint 2 месяца назад
Safe to assume you have rebooted the UDM? Maybe uninstall Protect and then reinstall it? That is what I would try first.

@@ethernetblueprint Thanks for responding! I've already restarted several times and uninstalled the protect application and reinstalled it, it's stuck starting up. I've already written to sutomer service but they haven't responded yet. Hopefully I don't have to do a factory reset. If you have any ideas, I appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

Not sure what version you are running, but it looks like you aren't the only one... Check out this thread... There is an Ssh command that was ran that fixed the issue for a few people. community.ui.com/questions/UniFi-Protect-Stuck-on-Starting-After-3-2-12-Update/61cf6735-990a-4a8a-a6fd-240f8f6f990f

Can you explain how your power plugs from your devices run to your UPS? Do you use a PDU, or do you plug everything in individually into the UPS?
@donaldhoudek2889

In my case I have 5 UPS 120VAC outlets on the back of my UPS so each of the Ubiquity units (in a small rack on top of a shelf unit) are plugged into them. As for the IoT items they plug into a Power strip which then plugs into a UPS outlet. All 13 cameras are PoE and get their power supplied by the USW- Pro 24 switch.

I personally use 2 simple rack mounted powerstrip in my rack. Both of them plug into my UPS.

More subscriptions?! No thanks. My NAS sends me an email when it gets powerfail signals. I used to use the snmp interface to capture runtime data but I never did anything with the data so I no longer bother. Thanks for the overview though.

cloud card/subscription not required to monitor remotely. Run the USB or Serial connection from UPS to a PC and run APCUPSD program
@KeithHanlan

@@TristynRusselo I find it interesting that they are using APC's protocol (as suggested by your mention of apcupsd). Has that been adopted as a UPS standard now? I have half a dozen APC UPSs, some 30 years old. But I have been promising myself to look into other vendors next time. I confess to being really bothered by the subscription plans shown in this video and worry that Cyberpower might unilaterally decide to close that API in the future. I'm so sick and tired of being unable to truly own anything anymore. Nevertheless, your comment is reassuring. Thank you.
@TristynRusselo

@@KeithHanlan The application APCUPSD or APC UPS Daemon has no affiliation with APC. It started off as a side project to work with APC but has since expanded to include protocols for most major brands... From what I remember, that is, so some information might be wrong. I I'm using APCUPSD with my tripplite ups

What measurement did you use to calculate the power budget? And is it easy to find on ubiquity equipment?
@donaldhoudek2889
@donaldhoudek2889 2 месяца назад
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but to calculate my power budget for the UI equipment that is running 24/7/365 here is mine. All my UI equipment uses 149 Watts. 149 Watts * 24 hours / 1000 = 3.576kWh (per day) * 365 = 1.305kWh(year) * $.14 (Duke Energy per kWh) = $182 (Year)
@ethernetblueprint
@ethernetblueprint 2 месяца назад
I will be honest, I didn't really calculate anything. I have just been doing this for a while now and have been around UPSs in my job so I guestimated that a 1500VA UPS would be enough for my needs. If you look at the specifications of the Unifi gear in the Unifi Store, it will give you power information about the equipment. Don't over think it though.

Curious if you have to do any additional setup for this to work on the ubiquiti side of things?

Nut server is fine. I may build one and do a video on it too. This is more for the person who doesn’t want to take the time to learn all that and wants power alerts. Plug and play and super super affordable.

NAS devices draw a lot of power. Consider connecting to your NAS and setting the NAS to shut down after a few minutes. If they had the battery power test in the lowest tier it would be a win for me.

Thanks. I will look at implementing that. Hoping this helps users who don't have a Synology in their racks...

I am using 3 APCs around the house. My Synology is connected to it via usb to APC. No additional setting up is necessary. I will get email notification. I was looking into Cyberpower UPS (which are supported by Synology so no $10 needed 😂). Only issue is reputation regular cyberpower products are not great compare to APC. Maybe rackmount versions are ok. Update: What about Ubiquity camera system and UPS. Is there any communication via USB so NVR will power down before run out of power and potentially cause damage to file system. I can’t hope be home when outage is happening. There needs to be some automation as is done on Synology (shutdown itself when the battery is running out).
@ethernetblueprint
@ethernetblueprint 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the info!... So just for some clarity, are all of your 3 APCs connected to you Synology via USB? As far as your question about communication between the UPS and Unifi Device, I don't think that is an option, but I don't know. Never looked into it.

Be sure to get a "Pure Sine Wave" UPS and not a "Simulated Sine Wave" UPS. The latter is much less expensive than the former but can damage delicate electronic equipment.

UGH! ANOTHER subscription paywall? No thank you. Thinking this through, unless you are using this for your ISP's Cable Modem, Cyberpower can't connect to it's Cloud outside your home to verify and send you and alert. A UPS needs to be 100% local.

I have my fiber modem and all network equipment protected so I have no problem receiving an email notification when my house looses power. It isn't super important but it is nice to know that when I get home, I need to bring some stuff like my NAS back online and verify its integrity. And it helps me understand the panicky messages from my daughters 😉
