Mega Transports: Mining Truck | Engineering Documentary
How can a dump truck too heavy for the roads be transported?
If a transporter needs to be transported, if 176 wheels aren’t enough to carry its weight and if the load weighs twice as much as the transporter… Then it must be the mother of all mega transports! The setting: Canada. The cargo: an ultra-class dump truck. The heroes: tough men with delicate fingers and eagle eyes.
In the midst of the no-man’s-land of Fort McKay, in the province of Alberta, the multi-national company Mammoet has built up a business for special transports. For there is treasure in this region: natural gas. To extract it, heavy machines are necessary. Heavy Machines like the 797. The biggest dump truck Cat has ever built - THE work horse of the North American mining industry. The record-breaking size of its wheels is matched only by that of its price: six to eight million dollars. This is the very truck that Mammoet is supposed to deliver today to its operation site, an oil sands surface mine.
Although the mine is only 7 kilometres away, the truck does not manage the short distance on its own power. With the truck’s 300 tons distributed over only four wheels, the road would not be able to withstand the weight. Like an elephant standing on four juice-boxes. The pressure on the four small patches of ground would immediately burst the asphalt. So, it has to be transported on a special trailer, which has to be precisely assembled before the loading can start. And: the transport has to be finished before rush-hour…
This mega transport requires everything from man and machine.

Not even the second biggest, excavators 250-300 tonnes and upward are bigger than the 797. Shovels are bigger again, and draglines are the biggest mining machines outside the largest bucket wheel excavators. There are other dump trucks as big as the 797, but it is the largest mechanical drive truck on the planet

Both 114 and 115 truck were due for a over-hall at the same time. They were delivered back to the client within 24hrs of each other. I know this as I worked at this specific mine, having the opportunity to operate both of those haulers during a shift cycle. If I recall correctly, they each had approximately 76,000 hours(+/- 5000) on them prior to the rebuild. Everything was new when they went back in service, including all the cab amenities. Cat 797B. Still my favorite haul truck to operate.✌

400 tonnes at 40 kmph translates to one hell of a deadly force. Ever think what would happen if you had to apply the brakes suddenly. How far would the trailer slide before it came to a halt ?

Yeah these guys have very tight highway delivery windows. Most of the mines are accessible only by a two-lane highway. An extremely busy highway during shift changes.

At 18:28 he says a 16 speed transmission it is actually an 18 speed transmission. five actual gears. there is a high and low range but only four of the gears are used in high range. So now you are up to nine speeds. each of these gears can be "split" giving you a total of 18 speeds. They forget to count low when counting the gears.

Might be a good idea to have the workers overalls a different colour than the trailer
