Thanks for sharing this video, I remember watching it as a kid and admiring everything, can't believe that I actually work at Caterpillar now but on the digital products, not the actual machines. Mad respect to everyone that works with the machines, these are really jobs like no other!
Companies like Caterpillar is what makes America “great.” Not talk, war or other insanity. Good engineering. Industrial production and job accomplishment.
We just needs Trump's mindset, not the man. Being proud of America and making sure _our_ interests are served first will fix us. Too many companies produce our stuff over seas then sell it back to us making other countries' working class wealthier instead if ours. But we have a career politician in charge now. No chance of corruption going forward...
@Apexseals i agree it will never reach the levels of production we once had but any manufacturing that _can_ be done here _should_ be done here. It's just too bad these companies care more about bottom lines than empowering their very own country and keeping it afloat. Every dollar spent on a foreign-made product is one we won't likely see back in our economy.
Thanks for the upload. I work at the Caterpillar Decatur plant. I'm a welder on the large wheel loader line but get back near the 797 line often. It really is an awesome engineering accomplishment. Great video!
This is a great documentary, thanks for posting. The specs of the 797 kept blowing my mind. 4 metre high tyres, each weighing 5 tons. 3,500hp engine with two 500kg crankshafts???? It's an engineering marvel, and a logistical marvel having so many manufacturing and assembly plants all over North America. Caterpillar is truly an awe inspiring company. I'm so glad I watched this.
I was a trucker and was in that Decatur plant everyday for about 5 years and hauled most of the parts for the dumps, scrapers and graders. Also hauled monster engine blocks from Mapleton Illinois to Lafayette engine plant. Also took parts of dumps to mines for assembly. Up the side of mountains and all. A on open platform and rolling tarp trailers. It was amazing work.
We probably worked for the same Company. Virtually everywhere there's a CAT Plant, this particular Heavy-Haul Company has a Terminal Adjacent to it. 'Was there 2014-2017
Really enjoyed watching this well done For a brilliant upload It's very interesting to Watch and to see how it works. Big massive thanks for this. And Thanks for caterpillar Plant for taking the time explaining all the Details.👍
I dunno, my father in-law is a tire tech at the Kennecott copper mine in Utah and they have several of the 797 haul trucks along with a bunch of "smaller" models. I can assure you he is far from physically fit.
my dad is a mining engineer and once he let us tour in one of the pits he is working. i heard a sound like a jet airplane coming but to my amazement it's this house size truck that came towards us.
Ha, Ha...Yeah, I live here in Sacramento, Calif...since 1985...the 'lawmakers' want the cushy lifestyle, but please build everything elsewhere...then ship it here with diesel trains using....uhm...hemp oil for fuel...no wait....better make that electric trains...
Actually, air-powered hydraulics are a thing. Uses the brake system air compressor to power an air motor, which powers a hydraulic pump. They are not uncommon for larger hydraulic jacks in diesel shops.
I work with heavy equipment, granted, NOTHING this big. The biggest things I work on are like 500 excavators, or maybe 50 ton dump trucks. But even they are crazy. Being behind the wheel of one is one of the coolest things. Couldn’t imagine driving one of these.
Congratulations ..... Very Powerful .. Very Good .. Very Nice .. Very Interesting .. Very Beautiful .. Very Top .. Very Greatful .. Very Wonderful of flute Teacher ..... Thank you so much Teacher ..... God bless you ..... Thanks God Love ..... Happy .....
So if they're digging oil out of the ground, what are their spill policies? Doesn't matter or depends on what it is? Recycling? I'm curious what the comment section thinks.
US conversion: price $3.4m Euro is approx $3.9m USD (Euro is 1.174 USD currently); height 7 meters is 23 ft (1 meter is 3.3ft); weight of the final assembled 797B is 600 Tons ( 1 ton is 1,000kg and 1 kg is 2.2 pounds so 1.3 million pounds ) and it can haul 400 tons of weight i.e. 0.9 million pounds). cheers
My father in-law is a tire tech at the Kennecott copper mine in Utah and changes these tires all the time. About a year ago a guy had fallen asleep coming down a hill and wrecked the truck. He did between 1 and 2 million dollars worth of damage to the truck.
Whoever wrote this script really didn’t do their homework well. The metal bubbles *then* melts? How tf are you gonna boil the metal before you melt it?
Yeah, annoying to listen to, if you know anything about the various processes...the 'Commentator' is just reading a script, and adding some drama, while leaving out a lot of details some of us really want to hear...around 28-30- minutes they're showing a V-16...not a V-12...and the big tires, the limiting factor on the size is the ability to transport them on the road...
There must be a rule that they can't show a picture for more than 2 seconds. There is a lot of details in the pictures to see if we had more than a couple of seconds.
Weight! When loaded.... is more than 600 tons! That's more than a Boeing 747!!! Maybe because airplanes are designed to fly not carry rocks. That's like saying: My pickup truck, when loaded...weighs more than an ENTIRE ROWBOAT!!!!!
You do realize that even though the 747 flies, it's not actually as light as a bird, right? Are you that dimwitted, or just some dickhead with dimwitted insights?
@@jcamposcjjc2552 I know it's not as light as a bird. But unlike that haul truck it's made out of aircraft grade aluminum, titanium, and carbon composites and is extremely weight sensitive. The haul truck is the opposite. You can tell just by looking at the axles and tires needed to support the truck vs the landing gear of a 747. I understand it's not a fucking hot air balloon or zepplin. A Boeing 747 weighs 735,000lbs when at maximum capacity (usually much less and depending on the variant) and your cat 797f is 1,375,000lbs Average "when loaded" the only "dickhead" with dimwitted comments here, is you.
Alex Watts they use 747 because an average person can put it in perspective on how really big and heavy these haul trucks are. Most people watching this show probably don’t come from equipment and have never been around these machines. You’re welcome, use your brain alittle and don’t be a such a dickhead bud.
Maria Maniscalco lubing the pins would make installation easier, but freezing them not so much. The difficulty installing them is from mis-alignment. If freezing did make it easier. that would mean the fit was too tight to start with. These are pivot points, they need a bit more clearance than that.
You bet. Their Trucks, Dozers, Scrapers, etc,+ Diesel & Natural Gas Engines are absolute Top World Class. Cat machines are everywhere, including the Antarctic. Very interesting Utube showing various uses & shops there.
$$ 30K tires...yeah, and around 5,000 pounds..(that's 2,270 Kilos)......there's a Goodyear 'specialty' tire dealer here in Sacramento, Calif...they just leave the big tires on the ground all the time...not like a couple guys with a pick-up are going to drive in at night and steal them... And...there at ...40:00....how about showing the welders 'fusing' all that 1" plate with miles of beads, using flux-core wire..?
@@muffmasterGoodyear Specialty Tires...North Sacramento...TRI-C Machine and Manufacturing, West Sacto...where I was 'The Welder'...and ran Miles of Flux-core.... building ...well...tire shredders....
He's just reading a prepared text...if you look at a few of these videos...you could swear there are only 2 people doing all the narration...1 man, 1 woman...
I notice that too. Worked on equipment & ran equipment like this my whole life. They a saying.. Out of CAT you are out of equipment. They last!!! 1 job we running 20+ year old equipment & still holding a 91+% uptime. That there hard to beat. I just hope they drop there quality standards.
bigblocklawyer.... Some clueless person who is addressing an audience whom he hopes is less knowledgeable than himself about the subject at hand so that he won't be caught in his ignorance. : )
If the roads are not maintained properly or the drivers corner too fast the steel cables in the tires will create enough friction/heat to catch the tire on fire.
A meter equals roughly 3.3 feet; a yard is 3 feet exactly. Kilogram equals roughly 2.2 pounds. Most countries in the world use the metric system. The USA is the only country left that is using the imperial system. We are special! 😆
Derp... isn't it obvious why? The Euro Area has a larger GDP than the US and a much larger population...so the better question is why wouldn't an Australian media company 7mate quote a product thats sold internationally using the worlds largest currency? Murica were (the) #2 (economy)...
So the factory is in the US, most of the parts are built in the US but for some reason they saw fit to price everything in Euro, weight stated in meters and kilos, neither of which are widely popular in the country they are built in? The idiots that make these videos never cease to amaze me!
I have to have a calculator handy while watching shows like this to do the rough conversions from metric to standard. When was the last time somebody in the US referred to an area of land in "hectares"?
How come the voice-over is using metrics instead of imperial? Not that I mind at all (typing from Italy), just curious of the choice made. This because I'm assuming it's an American documentary...
Yeah the Kilos and hectares is starting to bug me We are in America. Caterpillar is a true American company. Despite having to be assemble in other places due to the size it is just not feasible to assemble and ship from America. Anyhow, it is a pity the Cat doesn't build on road truck engines anymore. Thank you California for forcing regulations that a company didn't want to deal with. Even International had the same issue with the cummins engine which was proven to be more emission clean compared to other diesels with the emission crap. Anyhow, truly a mega factory. Massive feat of engineering
This would be better then any modern tank out there ...tall enough if it did run over a land mine all it would resive is a scorch mark ...... Its would also mow over tanks like a human steping on an army guy ... Dude's bringing one of these 797 truck to a war battle WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY ALTER THE BATTLE...... IT WOULD BE A ROLLING FORT
It’s the weld puddle stupid. Your eye should look no where else and your hands whether they giggle or not will do with the arc what keeps the puddle the same size as you move. Even you will be amazed if you can train your eye as to what the puddle is.
They feel the need to add some 'extra' drama...even though most of the viewers don't want it...we're clicking on these videos because we want the details...
The narration, though. "The AIR chamber HYDRAULICALLY adjusts SEAT HEIGHT" Ummm..... air PNEUMATICALLY suspends the seat and gives it shock absorption, and happens to be adjustable. Hydraulics would be a rough ride, as fluid doesn't compress.
Davy Schkkaert. Although your video is very informative I would suggest to take in consideration that the United States with it's 327.2 million people, Birmania 53.37 million Liberia 4.732 million, Antigua 80,161. the United Kindom 66.04 million, for a total of 531,503 million people that use the imperial system as a set of standards for weights and measures. In my mind if I wanted to make my product to be understood by everyone I would take the time to make the conversion and offer both in unison at all times. The reason is simple. You do not want to leave your public knowing half of the information in your explanation. To remedy that I would do the conversion and say both of them at once. If you think it will be confusing, believe me it will not. I hope you don't take this the wrong way. Thank you.
Carlos, with due respect to your reply...China, Russia, India, Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe...just to name a few gazillion people living there, are using the metric system. Is about time that USA starts to adopt. My two cents. Cheers
Mr.@@caddyrack All I'm saying is that if a person is writing an article and is meant to be read by a lot of people, is a question of knowing whether the person wants to challenge the reader to learn a different system or if they want to be understood right then and there. In communication, simplicity and direct clarity is all that matters. I say it does not takes anything away from the writer to use both systems. I know some writers do it, because it's all about the respect for the readership. Whether it's time for the US to change over to metric or not, should no be a reason not to offer the information using the system that can be understood by the US readers, at least that is how I see it. Thank your answer.✏️
@@carlosaraujo2944 Thank you for the reply Carlos, everyone is entitled to their opinions and I agree with that, it is nice to read a nice response (like yours) instead of other insulting comments. Cheers
Mr.@@caddyrackyou deserve no less. When I read you comment/ reply for the first time I knew I was dealing with a highly inteligent gentleman, with a considerable measure of patience. I am like you also wish that every exchange I get would be as civilized as ours thank you again.✏️
I wonder why they bring it all to come together with it all! Mainly to save money for reduction of shipping costs but have it doesn't have to be on the highway for regulation and/or new Department of Transportation rules! Just curious. I know so tax reduction due to State, local taxes reduction by going to accompanying staff of the factory, places where housing the staff, fuel, jobs in and bla, bla and bla
At the narrator is going to use the euro. They also got a use the dollar in converting. I'm going to tell you this RU-vid is an American company and 60% of the revenue. The support RU-vid come from America so I don't care if your views of you from outside of America yet American company. It's just the same with imperial measurements, if you want to use metric also provide conversations.
