"If you contemplate time or presence at all, it’s quite odd that we were there in the perfect sliver of time, in that passing moment. Had we stayed at breakfast for a few more minutes, or forgot something back at camp and had to run back quick, a single minute in either direction and we miss one of the greatest spectacles I’ve ever witnessed. Fantastic things happen in fantastic places, right? " - dv

Interesting that the dingo has learned to hunt an introduced species such as the Buffalo. I have heard recently that crows, have learned to eat cane toads, by turning them upside down and eating the safe bits. Shows how intelligent these creatures really are!

It is amazing to see, because canids have been hunting placental herbivores for millions of years. Some 5,000 years ago, dingoes reached Australia, and they took to hunting rather different prey. Then Anglo settlers introduced rabbits, pigs, and buffalo, and dingoes were ready to hunt such animals once more, just as they always had. Amazing indeed. Unfortunately, this meant they were also ready to hunt sheep and cattle, much to the chagrin of farmers. But that's another story.

Now if only the aussie government can show the same initiative that the Dingos and Crocs are when it comes to hunting ferals. Now if can we just reintroduce the Tassie Devils and Quolls back to the mainland so they can take on feral cats, foxes, rabbits and rats that would be great.
@i.m.evilhomer5084
@i.m.evilhomer5084 7 лет назад
Re-evaluated Restarangos Devils are indeed scavengers but they're also opportunist predators and despite not being pack hunters they do feed in communal groups similar in vain to the Komodo Dragon. Cats and foxes like leopards are lone hunters and will back off if there's a group of larger predators animals such Devils and Dingos. Feral Cats in Tasmania behave differently and have smaller populations where there's a large population of Devils around suggesting that devils are finding cat dens with their superb sense of smell and exploiting kittens as easy meals(pouches ftw). This may also explain why Foxes haven't colonized Tasmania yet. You're right about Quolls not being able to take down cats and foxes but they are superb rodent and rabbits hunters. In fact, had foxes and cats not been introduced and native predators not been culled, there's evidence to suggest that Quolls and other native predators such as Dingos and the Perentie could of drove rabbits to extinction.
@i.m.evilhomer5084
@i.m.evilhomer5084 7 лет назад
Re-evaluated Restarangos You mean the Maria Island Translocation Project. I believe a population explosion of Devils was the reason why the bird numbers were dropping, many Devils were sent back to Tasmania because of this. I personally don't think it was right to introduce Devils to Maria island anyway, the last time Devils set foot on the island was when it was still part of the mainland. I have heard that if Devils were reintroduced onto the mainland that there would be a trial run with Devils of the same sex to see what kind of impact Devils would have on the ecosystem so not to repeat what happened on Maria island.

@firethylacine1976

I believe that the Australian government (and all other governments, really) should take a different approach to invasive species. As we see here, native species have the capacity of adapting to new challenges. If the government tried only to contain (not exterminate) invasives, natives could then adapt and fight back. It would be cheaper than trying to kill everything.

Except there IS one large extant terrestrial predator that evolved in and is native to Australia but is extirpated from there (likely as a result of human activity), only surviving somewhere else. Considering the size of these two species is comparable to grey wolves and american bison we could assume that both canines use the same strategy for hunting these wild bovids. I have read that when wolves hunt bison they form larger hunting packs of over a dozen wolves. Even then, adult bison are near impervious to wolf predation and they hunt juveniles. If dingos formed large hunting packs they could regularly hunt water buffalo juveniles. But like wolves, dingos probably couldn't take down an adult buffalo unless it is sick/injured beforehand they are just too large. These dingos need more hunters to up their hunting success rate. Just my two cents on the video.

Australia need to introduced sumatran tiger there, or maybe leopard or jaguar to be apex predator, it will be great for the australia ecosystem and to keep the balance. Maybe cheetahs too. Maybe Donnie Vincent recorded something on the dingoes that we'd attribute easier to apes, cetaceans and crows: the creation of a new culture among the members of a given pack. See that these dingoes aren't afraid by a much larger buffalo and are even trying to find weak spots on something that can be seen like a "tank of nature" no matter if it's an Asiatic or African one. There are some abnormalities on nature that even biology people doubt if they aren't aware of, like the Savuti lions that not only aren't afraid of elephants but are also capable to hunt adult individuals by forming a huge pack. Theoretically, only baby elephants would be in danger against lions, but in Savuti things are a bit different and lions don't seem to take attention to that hunter-prey size ratio that happens to be the norm on nature. Maybe dingoes are following the same path and knowledge is being developed and transmitted on the packs by try and error. If a pack manages to perfect the strategy and be successful, they'd be the "Aussie Savuti lions".

Dingoes aren't indigenous. Sure they've been here a long time, but they aren't indigenous like our marsupials, or Eucalypts. They did not evolve here as our other species of animals did. And to think they're not responsible for the loss of any truly indegenous 'native species' is delusional.

When you know they regularly hunt domestic cattle it’s not a big stretch for a big enough pack to take on buffalo. A sign of this hunting going on is that many have missing tails from the previous attacks. And really they don’t like domestic herding dogs and will come after your dogs on sight.

It buffaloes use the same strategy of hunting in packs and singling out a Dingo then buffaloes can kill the dingoes one by one since they have outnumbered dingoes in this instance.

And the results is, they had the skills. But Mum is just to much for em. To the comment below, I think a potential 8000+ years is more than enough to say they're native to Australia. Fully adapted to Australian conditions eons ago. Dingo's are genetically a separate species called Canis dingo. See www.dingofoundation.org/

Bring Komodo dragons to Australia, they’d be a beneficial predator to control invasive species populations

Does Dingos and Red Fox cross path? I hope they can eradicate Red Foxes in Australia because it’s becoming a real problem because they’re driving native species to extinction especially the rodents.

Probably Thousands of years ago, dingoes hunted in the wild with humans on horses. Dingoes always try to stop the prey, not to fight directly-this behawior same as hunting dogs, because dingoes are dogs without owners
