In this very comprehensive and fully explained video, I showcase a rare departure from runway 22 at LaGuardia Airport. And, I've got two cameras on board - one on the right side and one on the left side. That's a first for this channel. On top of that, ATC audio is explained in detail and you'll stay aboard all the way down to the Orlando International Airport. Flying from LaGuardia early on a Saturday in the summer paid off as often, one runway will be closed allowing for unique operations!

@@PeterMasella I can actually remember as a kid back in the late '70s taking off in a DC-8 Stretch quad-engine jet. Those Pratt & Whitney JT3C turbojets were deafening in the cabin! Passengers would never tolerate that kind of noise nowadays.

What an awesome video! Runway 22 and both sides shown. Thank you! Love that turbofan hum on takeoff. Peter, you are a true aviation enthusiast, wanting some turbulence and diversion to an alternate airport (extra flight!). The airport tram gives a great "intro" to the Orlando area, like a ride at Disney or Universal. I've been there many times. Thank you again.

I'm probably the only person who actually misses the old green windowed terminal, and the waste basket shaped control tower! But it was there that I embarked upon my airline career almost 50 years ago. And yes, taking off on 22 was very rare - in fact, back in the late 70's we needed specific permission from a chief pilot to use it, due to the noise issues. But one evening I had the shortest flight of my airline career there, and the takeoff was from runway 22. It was late evening, around 10pm, and we were operating the weekly ferry flight of a 727 from LGA to JFK. These ferry flights were done to reposition what had been a domestic airplane all week long over to JFK, to fly a few weekend trips to the Caribbean. Of course no passengers were aboard these flights (except for one instance where I had arranged to take a class of fearful flyers on one of the ferries for their "graduation" flight, but that is another story), nor any flight attendants - just the three of us up front. In those days, I was the Flight Engineer. In ops, prior to going out to the airplane, we got word that, due to the relatively high winds out of the south, we would be using 22 and it was duly approved. This promised to be interesting, since with those winds, JFK would be using the 13's as well as their own 22's. It looked like we would takeoff from 22 and merely do a whifferdill to the left to land on 13L at Kennedy. With an off-to-on time of under 5 minutes staring us in the face, I made sure to calculate both the takeoff and the landing data and hand it up forward. It was well that I did so, because although in my logbook this flight took 25 minutes, that was from block to block, the value upon which our pay was based. I did not record the wheels up to wheels down time. But when I fly this flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator, which is completely accurate for such an investigation, it takes just under 4 minutes. That is very likely a world record for a transport category airplane for a cross country flight! Most of those ferry flights involved going nearly out to Montauk to fit into the arrival pattern at JFK, and lasted nearly an hour. Not that night! Even in very small planes, I have never had another flight as short as that.

As I mentioned on your other LGA video recently, I was traveling business on a Sunday morning mid-July 1998 on a DL 727-200 chockablock full LGA-MCO. Early summer morning heat building, I already knew the usual repaving on Runway 13-31 was taking place. Wow, Runway 22 was the active runway for takeoffs. Aircraft taxis out, onto the concrete deck, then onto the runway. Engines spooled up, pushing for takeoff power, brakes released, and we’re rolling!! We rotated just beyond mid-runway. I’ll bet a lot of folks in Jackson Heights were jolted awake that Sunday morning. And that was a first for me!! A takeoff on Runway 22.Great videos Peter!! Keep ‘em rolling! ✈️

Great video and I can say your very well informed about LaGuardia airport. When I was sixteen I started flight lessons at KLGA. The school was at the large hanger building (next to the Marine Air Terminal) seen at 38:39. Our Piper Cherokees were tied down behind the hanger. At the time the area had plenty of room for non-airline operators. Btw I did rwy 22 takeoffs as a way of avoiding the frequent long lines of jets awaiting departure on 13/31. I love the quality of your footage over the Bronx. I was born and raised there. I can make out the buildings and schools in my old neighborhood next to Yankee Stadium. The footage reminds me of my flight school days at KLGA and my Bronx days as a bonus. I currently live a few miles north out of view. I can say that rwy 22 departures have been a rarity going back to the early days of passenger jets. Surrounding residents out up fierce opposition to the increase in noise. They relented to situations where strong winds (relatively uncommon) only allow rwy 22. Finally, a bit of trivia, there was a runway 32. It was a rather bogus one direction STOL only runway beginning at roughly where the old tower was. You can find it on airport charts back in the 60’s and 70’s. It was just a renamed taxiway. We used it as a way of avoiding the jet ground traffic. But few favored it because it was aimed directly at the high point of the bridge to Rikers!

Thanks for sharing that. I love the video and the views of NYC. I've flown out of LGA many times and it was almost always 13 over the stadium. It looks like you were on the GRNCH5 STAR (Standard Terminal ARrival) into MCO, which passes over just to the east of my house near Ocala. I see the planes flying over all day. I'm between the COAXE and GRTNG fixes. Some other things to point out on the descent into MCO, for those interested: At 30:49 you can see Lake Weir and Weirsdale in Marion County, Florida. At 32:17 you can see Lake Apopka in Orange County with the State Road 429 expressway clearly visible. You can barely see it, but the hangars for the Orlando-Apopka airport are visible to the left of the small lake to the left of those six large warehouse-type buildings in the middle of the video. Bob White Field and Orlando North Airpark, two small general aviation airports can also be seen (barely) in the right center of the photo in the right 1/3 between the lake on the right side of the video and Lake Apopka, halfway between the top and bottom of the video, but really hard to make out.

Peter, something else I wanted to add to the routing of your flight…the “land route”. Back in the 1960s working with Northeast Airlines, our B727-200s had life rafts aboard as we flew besides JFK-MIA or JFK-FLL, we flew to Bermuda so life rafts were carried on all 14 727-200s. Now, here’s the kicker, occasionally we’d have a DC9-30 on a Florida route and guess what they didn’t have life rafts. So hence they flew the’”land route”. As I’ve been out of the industry awhile, I’m wondering if DL and AA and others use certain aircraft on the”land route” because they’re not equipped with life rafts for “over water operations”. These aircraft mainly for U.S. transcon operations. Maybe you know ? Be curious to hear. Thanks again my good man!! ✈️

So according to ETOPS (Engine Turns Or Passengers Swim 😂) you can go up to 400 miles from land with just life jackets. Anything over 400 miles from land requires life rafts for all passengers (some of which can be the emergency slides).

Aha! The rarest operation possible at LGA! Congratulations, and thanks for the "stereo" video. Your dad has great camera personality... Let's see him more often! The second rarest LGA operation is the landing on Runway 13, which I experienced back around 1988, aboard a Midway DC-9-31. Hope you'll be able to video that treat someday. Other New York super-rare operations that one can dream of: JFK 4R and 22L departures (I've seen them, mostly during snow). JFK Runway 31R jet departures (I've seen them, mostly during Runway 31L closures in strong NW winds). EWR Runway 29 departures (Used to be more common in NW winds; I did one aboard a Delta 767-300 to ATL in the 1990s). EWR Runway 11 jet departures and jet landings (I saw them very occasionally back when I worked at EWR in the 1980s). SWF Runway 16 and 34 jet departures and landings (I never saw, but they happen when Runway 9/27 is closed or when there are strong NW winds) ISP Runway 33L jet landings and departures (I was aboard a SWA 737-300 that did a 33L landing on a very strong NW winds day... 5500' runway). ISP Runway 15R jet landings and departures (I guess these must occasionally happen when Runway 6/24 is closed).

7:45 "we can't do this under our own power" - could take this many ways but it's a safety / liability restriction, not lack of ability. The reverse thrust settings to reverse taxi are much higher than forward taxi, which creates a risk of sucking FOD off the ground, as well as potentially hurting ground crew. Much easier to just use a tug. This is especially true when the with engines mounted under the wing and close to the ground (which is most modern aircraft including the 321). But if the pilot needed to reverse taxi in some sort of emergency situation, the aircraft is fully capable.

Good catch, as this is unusual. I will offer a pro tip for anyone trying to get a 22 departure. Book your flight on Saturday Morning. LGA traffic is much lighter on Saturday, so the port authority almost always closes a runway to work on it during this time. If the runway being worked on is 13-31, you have a very good shot.

It would be cool if you know a pilot who would be willing to suction cup a GoPro camera to the cockpit window so you can make a video of the flight into LGA. It doesn't hurt to ask.
@PeterMasella

I’m not sure if that’s allowed in the United States. Almost every cockpit camera out there is from a country outside of the United States. In any case, I don’t know any pilots!

Essentially, every time there is an accident on runway 31 then 22 is used for both takeoff and landing. When I was flying with my parents on September 21, 1989, the previous day US Air 5050 drifted left after a tire blew out and the pilots attempted to abort the takeoff. It failed and went into Bowry Bay were fortunately only 2 died of the 59 on the aircraft, but the runway was closed for a few days until they could remove the wreckage. So when I was much younger I took off that time from runway 22 because runway 31 was closed from an accident the previous day. Fortunately much fewer accidents today. The last was in 2016 when Mike Pence's plane (a new Eastern Airlines plane when running for VP) crashed on runway 22 - closing that runway for a day. No one was hurt.
@PeterMasella
@PeterMasella 15 дней назад
I remember this back in 1989. I flew to LGA on March 5, 2015 which is the same day Delta Flight 1086 veered off of runway 13 thus closing runway 13-31. Later that day only runway 4-22 could be used, and I believe my flight landed on runway 4.
@Buc_Stops_Here
@Buc_Stops_Here 15 дней назад
@@PeterMasella Yes, they always have to close a runway when an accident happens there. Fortunately, they have been greatly reduced from the late 1980s until today.

Why were you moved out of the way for the American Eagle to be put in front of you? It’s one of those flying things I haven’t been able to figure out 😂. At my local airport KSAN, occasionally planes will be moved to C while taxiing to get an expedited takeoff and I’m never able to figure out why
@PeterMasella
@PeterMasella 11 дней назад
I think I explained it in the video. Generally, when this happens, this is to increase separation in the air between planes going on the same route. Adding a flight between two flights going on the same route increases separation. Perhaps the flight that took off in front of Eagle was on the same route as us.

I have done an equal amount of runway 22 takeoffs and 13 landings. It just depends on which runway is closed and they seem to have been rotating closed runways over the last few decades.
