There's a throwaway line at 3:10 that they will improve the transit system between them (the terminals). No note about improving the Airtrain or have the subway come directly to the airport. And even then they only talk about connecting the new terminal 1 with terminal 4, and 4 with 5, presumably behind security.

JFK (like probably 99% of airports in the US) makes a LOT of money off parking (and rental car fees and things like taxi airport surcharges). If you could just tap in with your OMNY card and travel to JFK easily, more people would do it and hurt their revenue from those other forms of transport.

T4 being operated by JFKIAT, T1 will be operated by NTO, T6/7 will be operated by JMP. 2. 2:23- Saying airlines can never divert to another terminal is also inaccurate since all terminals do their best to support each other in times of need. T4 accepts flights from other airlines/terminals not scheduled to be there on a regular basis. They will also accept flights on an emergency basis if necessary. The main issue is the ground handling staff may not have the necessary man power/equipment to support an operation in another terminal if they are not based out of it as it'll stretch them thin and take time for them to get there.

When you have a separate corporation just for the Terminal 1 project (the CEO is featured in the video), you know there's a lot of overhead just for the corporate bureaucracy. As usual, shareholder value (or return on investment in general if it's not a publicly traded company) is the #1 priority.

There were actually 9 terminals, the current Terminal 8 was built where the old #8 and #9 sat. The new Terminal 6 is replacing the old #7 and the new Terminal 1 will cover the space of old #1, #2, &#3. I do hope they remember everything when this is completed since it should be 4 terminals, not 8 with missing numbers!

I question how good this new airport will be. For example, the new Terminal 1 gets 23 gates all which can handle A380s, a plane that has been discontinued and won't be operating much past the next decade. So when it fully opens in 2030, the gates will not be at maximum capacity as the gates will service smaller planes then they can handle. The Terminals remaining after the redesign will be Terminal 1 (new), Terminal 4 (already open and finished), Terminal 5 (redesigned and expanded with 6), and Terminal 8 (redesigned, merged with Terminal 7). Four terminals in the end with 151 gates, up from 128. AirTrain will still run to all the terminals and the roads will be rerouted to make it potentially easier to get around by car as well.
@vikingtigr
@vikingtigr 11 дней назад
There are no pure A380 gates. They might have a second floor jetway. Other aircraft can generally use the main level gates.

As someone that’s through JFK every couple of weeks or so it’s not really that bad. I’m usually starting/ending my journey there but a lot of JFK’s problems from a passenger perspective (except airside terminal transfer) aren’t really JFK design problems, rather just big airport problems… For O&D passengers having 5 smaller terminals has its benefits over a smaller number of mega terminals.

A major thing the Port Authority should consider making more affordable parking spaces available. Most drivers choose to hang around or idle right by the terminals o nearby to avoid paying for parking at the airport, thus creating traffic jams. They should also have affordable long term parking available right by the terminals.

All nice and stuff, but what is and will be missing: Good Public Transport. 20 km (13 mi) between JFK and Manhattan and it still takes an hour by AirTrain + MTA. It won't need crazy high-tech solutions like a Maglev or Hyper Loop. Standard rail with 160 km/h (100 mph), a limited number of stops (e.g. Broadway Junction + Atlantic Av/Barclays Ctr) and it should be easily done in 20-30 min. Or just reactivate the old _Rockaway Beach Branch_ between LIRR and Howard Beach, a cut-and-cover tunnel parallel to RWY 13R/31L, arriving between T1 and T4, done.

I don't think this project should be such a high priority. JFK's terminals aren't too shabby, the runways are already near capacity without space for further expansion, and this will just incentivize the airport to schedule more flights than it can reasonably handle. Newark should be a higher priority for a megaproject, since it actually has a path to increase its capacity, and the solution needs a lot of investment to work. If EWR reconstructed its terminals mid-field, they could squeeze in a 3rd, independently operated parallel runway (greater than 1310 meter separation) that would increase overall flight capacity by up to 70%. By going with a terminal layout similar to Charles De Gaulle's Terminal 2E, the reconstructed EWR could go with a design that combines the efficiency of the concourse layout with the convenience of the pier layout. This would also leave space for US Route 9 and an air train to be rerouted directly through the terminals, allowing for better traffic flow, and a zero-transfer connection to Penn Station.

Fred, hi from Alberta (Calgary) Canada. I had no idea JFK wasn't keeping pace, with so much attention on the redevelopment of LaGuardia one just assumes JFK is a given.. Our Intl airport passenger volume is 20M respectable and growing again (Canadian Market) but obviously not in the JFK universe. Just the annual wear and tear on JFK's facilities neglect one year and your behind by five actually. So its great to see one of the worlds great Intl airports receiving the capital investment and redevelopment it apparently requires. After all expectations come with being the Big 🍎. Great episode always feeds the construction geek in me and provides a worldly perspective no other pure construction site can come close too. Always look forward to more, amazing topics (empty super tall's of NYK's Millionaires Row a favorite) presentation and above all you are clearly knowledgeable and passionate about construction. Thanks
