"Only On The Web": Dita Von Teese is one of the instigators of America's new burlesque revival. She tells CBS News Sunday Morning why the racy theatrical performances are back in public spotlight. (CBSNews.com)
And this is what makes Dita so freaken cool. She's been asked many times if she thinks there is a deference between what she does and what the girls down the street at the local strip club are doing, and she always says no.....except for style of dance or clothing/costumes that she wears. There is no shame in her game. She has no problem with letting people know that she used to be a "stripper" . She never assumes that she is better than the girl working at the GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS club over by the railroad tracks. The fact that she is this down to earth, is what makes her so likable.
sandra sepulveda It's interesting you should bring that up. Dita has pointed out many times during her career that she actually likes the label of being a stripper. She's said that she loves the art of stripping and when she was just starting out performing in a strip club she considered herself just like the other girls save for her wanting more pieces of costumes to take off.
Dita Von teese is an artist who uses her own body as part of her canvas. Why are people saying she's "done nothing" and is "shallow"? Creating art and beauty with true integrity is one of the most admirable things a human being can do. Unfortunately anything associated with femininity, especially when it also involves sex, will be shat on and dismissed as "shallow" "pointless" "slutty" "unimportant". But when men depict naked women it suddenly becomes art worth validating.
Some people need to stop hating. Dita is my role model and I really don't like that she is being torn down. She empowers women all over the world. Please - remember the golden rule.
I think culture has a huge influence in how female sexiness is perceived and accepted in some societies.... as well as overall body image. That was a great interview, she is a very intelligent woman..... not to mention drop dead GORGEOUS !
She's a burlesque performer, model, costume designer and actress who has done an excellent job branding and promoting her work. Sooo...Yeah. Sorry, but she's earned her fame.
Good for you Dita, I think burlesque is brilliant, it's got old fashioned class. The studio photos of the starlets back in the 40's and 50's were very glamorous , I remember my dad had an old book of all the film stars from that era, the pictures were in technicolour and everyone looked so sophisticated, well to me as a little girl. I couldn't wait to grow up and glam up like these stars photos. Only when I did grow up, there was no glamor, sophistication or class. When I was a teenager, I loved finding feminine clothes, mainly dresses, beautiful cut trousers, silk blouses, well silk anything. I didn't follow fashion at all. Now a days it seems the more flesh one shows off the better? I just don't get it, where is the mystery? and I really dislike tattoos. I always think what are these girls going to look like when they're in the 40's and everything begins to go south, and skin begins to gets very wrinkled. Or if they get married and want the whole 'merengue' wedding dresses, will they look great in photos with the tattoos showing! - I think not. I'm glad theres a revival of burlesque as more women discover the appeal of being feminine.
wanted to comment on betties 1950's vid. .. .. . .she was a body of beauty!!! she put me back in the 1940's-50's mind set & made me excited to watch her. Time is relevance. . . dita ur brill . . . pls make us proud. !!!!
I really like what MissMidoria had to say about burlesque - it really does appeal to women because of the costumes and the sensuality...and most importantly, the acceptance of lots of different body types! It's a man's world out there, us ladies gotta stick together! Dita is gorgeous and so savvy!
i love Dita von Teese's style. i personally love natural beauty, but i also love pin up burlesque. i think they both have their own charms and it's awesome to get up each day and just look however you feel like, natural and beautiful, or pin up and fly :)
As a man I will declare that strip clubs dont even compare to the awesomeness that is a burlesque show!! I went to one and was surprised by how many girls wanted to go with me!! it was so much fun and the best part is I did not go home broke!! XD
She is gorgeous, smart, well spoken and very honest. Burlesque is an art, I don't really see swinging around a pole as art I find those strippers kind of vulgar but this is classy and subtle.
She's soooo incredible. I love how articulate and well spoken she is; and how soft spoken too. I could write an essay on everything I love about her :) AND she's humble :)
LOL, what a lovely person and so well spoken, and good on her for not putting other dancers albiet stripper down. It is all DANCE ART, no matter what it is and we should stop being so hung up on judgement about what is decent or not, the human body is what it is in all its glory covered or uncovered. Dita is so classy
I love her. She seems so intelligent and I admire her for being so honest. She is really unique, and very inspiring too. Much better than the boring "girl next door" type.
I love the fact that her main audience is now female. I love her idea of creating "a different kind of sexy". Also i believe burlesque dancers are much more tastefull, glamorous, and gracefull than strippers. Im not putting them down either though. As Dita says thats just a different kind of sexy. Good to have the choice.
@HeartOfFantasy @HeartOfFantasy She admits to having her breasts and the beauty mark done. Not to mention she is actually a natural blonde, she personally dyes her hair.
It definitly appeals to women because it's such a feminine thing. It's like looking at ponies and flowers. But these ponies and flowers attract men which is something that women like to be able to do. I admire these women because theyre doing something they like instead of just trying to make some cash.
There are. I don't mean she's ugly. Neither ugly nor beautiful but everyone has his own taste. I admit I love this kind of skin and color. Make-up certainly helps but also a good life style.
An excellent point she makes, that Burlesque clubs were the precursor to modern strip clubs, but I think Burlesque shows that the best art and performance develops under constraint. The freedom to bare all and have graphic sexual performances discourages the creativity that Dita mentions: the need to be imaginative in teasing and tantalising the audience which the Burlesque strippers, lacking the freedom to be as extreme as their modern counterparts, excelled at (and still do).
I think Burlesque has always appealed to women. Hardcore grinding and full out nudity is definitely of the male mind. Women love sensuality and the thrill of the tease. And you're so right about it being glamorous. I remember seeing a lady do a fan dance on TV when I was kid and I thought she was so pretty and glamorous. More so than any Hollywood starlet.
I totally agree with you. I'm attracted to the 'glamour' of burlesque, but at the same time, completely aware that it is still essentially the 'commodification' of women as sex objects. People just dont want to believe that something so glam and gilttery can have a dark side.
Well im a gay guy and I love Dita Von Teese I think she si the most beautful and glamorous woman alive Dita's class and personality easily beats any fake breasted trashy blond or any anorexic runway model Dita is unique
@HeartOfFantasy She admits to having her breasts and the beauty mark done. Not to mention she is actually a natural blonde, she personally dyes her hair.
If you think this is extreme, you should look up the guiness record holder - I think she's nicknamed the 'wasp woman' or something. She's taken the body modification even further.
wow. Burlesque is amazing. I'm really getting into it. I'd love to do something in Burlesque one day, and female Drag. Just for fun tho, I can't see myself doing anything profressional in these area's.
love Dita... interesting thing about her ending comment tho, ... the girl next door thing... Betty Page said " I was never the girl next door" ( Betty you will be missed) Just thought I would throw that in there.
@TheLonghairraven You're right, I'm pretty sure she's using botox as well. When she lifts her brows there are zero wrinkles on her forehead. Always the first clue that someone is using botox. Also, when you see full-length shots of her off stage, the body looks 37 but the face still looks 20.
Not at all. She's a very intelligent business woman, with a keen mind and ability to market herself even though she's very different. It seems you don't like Dita, but I'd encourage you to look a little deeper into who she is. I'm not a fan really, but I respect the way she carries herself, her intelligence, and what she does.
well she was {is} a stripper...but...somehow i ..dont mind she is...she..looks so beautifull and even im not a lesbian sexi as well and i can tell...she looks more intelligent and...u know well mannered, feminin....then a...common b***es we know from ...stripclubs..and..all. i think...its a kind of art {burlesque} what she is doing
I always think that Burlesque (modern day) is more about the female fantasy and stripping, lap dances, pole dancing etc are about the male fantasy... I know what I'm talking about as I have experience in both
@marcobagut I wanted to add that being something and having some friends who are the same as you does not, in any way, mean your numbers are large. I have lots of atheist friends, but I'm not fooled into thinking that America has massive number of atheists. We tend to gravitate to people like us so our viewpoint can be skewed. I WISH there were more men like you, though. They tend to be better lovers. No, that last part is NOT a joke.
The only thing I didn't like about this feature is that it didn't represent the range of burlesque. It really portrayed it as another type of stripping, and it's really not. I've gone to burlesque shows and seen performers who don't take anything off. I've seen some who take lots of things off, but do just about the most tongue-in-cheek, funniest things you'd ever see. It's really about the performance. It's much more art than it is just taking your clothes off. They missed that part.
@marcobagut Yes, I dated a man who hated male-oriented porn, but generally that IS the case. I should know having working in the sex industry myself when I was in college.
@MissMidoria I think that is just a gross generalisation. I am a man and I prefer far more erothic or burlesque than hard core...Believe me, many men prefer that!
@th1nkp1nk91 So, if DIta Von Teese doesn't have "a women's body", then does she have a man's body? She is a women, correct? She has a body, does she not? Please explain (perhaps without run on sentences or ending your sentences in prepositions).
