A documentary about the Salvation Army Hostel on Spa Rd in Bermondsey. A nice look back at the people and shops of that area in1957. #salvationarmy #bermondsey #sparoadbermondsey #homeless #1950slondon #1950s
Sad that there was a stigma associated with charity back then and being a "taker". Many of these men served in the Wars and never recovered. Thanks for sharing this video
They weren't that different from us back then. Different Circumstances. People are the same where ever you go, there is good and bad in every one, It's the march of time. ✌🏻☘️
I will say this, starting in the 1980's mid career and a family man I worked in Local Authority housing until retirement. In the cases I came across, hundreds I suppose in my career, seeing individuals and families with severe problems as a last resort, when the do gooders and expensive Social Services had failed the Sally Army in many cases stepped in and put people back on track. No religious conversions, no questions asked, just humanity. I'm not religious, not political, just an ordinary bloke with a hint of humanity. Please think before you make adverse comments people.
Will have to give this one a whirl... ...which I did, and well worth watching. Very sobering view of what life was like for many in Britain while I was still in my pram...
My Great Grandfather George Conway was a labourer who resided here at the time of his death of Tuberculosis in 1928. On the one hand it was good to know that places like this existed to care for men who where vulnerable or down on their luck but I do think it a bit shocking that men who where trained doctors and chemists were working here after many years doing menial jobs when they were clearly clever men. I hope they all found some kind of happiness and contentment though.
I remember going to the jumble sales in Sally army at Spa Road with my dad before he died in 1979 and then when I was a teenager living near there it seemed to be just tramps and drunks coming out of there...this has changed my view on the place.
my guess is the salvation army wanted an actor playing the role that looked older ( and was older ! ) than his years given in the film. You don't want a guy looking his age after all that drink ! remember this is a propaganda film to help with donations after all.
Having gone to school in inner London in the early 1950's where EVERYONE was from an immigrant family (Irish,Poles,Italians, Cypriots,German,West Indian, etc.etc.)helping to rebuildBritain after the war its like a sick joke hearing this rascist nonsense about 'Britishness' - one of the most 'mongrel' races on earth !!
