Absolutely incredible. I'm 29 years old. Born in '93. Been a fan of film noir for years. I love the atmosphere, yes, but it's more than that. Back then they couldnt rely on cgi or any fancy stuff to make a film interesting. So the directing and cinematography had to be good, real good. And this is perhaps one of the best examples of that I've ever seen. This film was not only incredibly well written but it was beautifully directed and shot. After seeing something like this, so original and so well-done, it really does make it so glaringly obvious how awful film production today has really gotten. Nothing is original and damn near every film has to rely on a big budget to make anything even worth seeing. The people in the 30s, 40s, and 50s had no idea how good they had it. Truly the golden age of cinema.
Actually, we did and do know how well we had it. We are well aware of the devolution of all things cultural. We even used to read real books and play instruments.
@@im-mu7tw lmao good point. It's a shame truly. But it seems to be a natural process. Every generation a little bit less gets passed on and a little more is lost each time
@@alexcarter2542 Change is part of life but the the kind of changes in the more recent past have not been haphazard, but a planned demolition. Look into 'The New Barbarians' and a lecture given by Dr Richard Day in the 1960s in the US.
Edward Arnold made a very convincing blind man. He really studied the character, the moves, the attitude. And Friday was an exceptionally trained dog. There was no dull moments in the movie. Thanks CCC for this pearl!!!
Outstanding cast. Great early bit for Donna Reed. Edward Arnold is just big fun in this. It gave him a chance to act and not just be a heavy, like he usually was.
what a beautiful movie. Donna Reed brought the drama, the dog brought the action and there was sheer genius comedy randomly thrown in that truly made me laugh. Great movie.
true.....earth just wasn't all rolling green hills and weeping willows, it's all about chasing the next buck, dealing with broken childhoods, cheating women, and tax stealing our money
Gosh I absolutely find this comment extremely charming. I’m trying to do the same my addiction, the pills are calling me, and I’m trying to find any movie, anything to take my mind off it. I to hope that I master my troubles to the comment above 👆🏽
Dogs!.... one of the few great reasons to spend time on Earth. As Lord Byron wrote: Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferosity, and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
Wow, absolutely wonderful movie...and I say that about almost none of them! Kept me interested, no cursing, the characters were wonderful, the plot amazing. Should have won awards!
An interesting little film. Edward Arnold is always good and plays a gumshoe with a difference. Loved the dog Friday as his sleuthing sidekick. One of Donna Reeds earliest roles and she was excellent.
One of the greatest actors ever Edward Arnold he was the head of screen actors guild when my Dad met him Dd said he was a nice guy the sign of a good actor Is if they can make uaff cry anger u invoke love and n he could do it all
I just finished watching this movie. What a treat! I've never seen Donna Reed play such a role; she was a very versatile actress and so beautiful. Great cast, I really enjoyed it. Thank you for posting it. 😊
That dog was well trained. He was the star in this movie!😍 I loved the scene where he came to meeting the black poodle and he had to decide to go on with his mission or go tramping with her😂🤣 He got a little side tracked there didn't he?😂
Donna Reed played a RN in THEY WERE EXPENDABLE. At the dinner party when she unfurled her hair, put on a pearl necklace and adjusted her handkerchief ....perfection.
I remember that movie!! Thanks to AMC & TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES which I no longer get and can’t afford cable. But used to watch both avidly!! Loved the Bio announcements and the “Star of the Month”!!
I read the comments and noted the differences of generations. Not a comment about Allan Jenkins (Marty), Horace McNally (Gabril), - 2-character actors who mainly were typed as "bad men" and both were in dozens of movies. Also no one mentioned Rosemae De Camp (Vera), who was ubiquitous in the 1940s thru the 1950s movies and television. An uncredited actor, the young, black-haired policeman, who was thrown in the wrestling match was ??, who played the father of the daughter Dustin Hoffman wound up with in THE GRADUATE! By the 1940s, the studios had the B&W films production values perfected. The mastery of shadows was an art. I bring these observations to you from close to eight decades of life. This movie is only 2 years older than me.
Allen Jenkins was great.....had a role later n life as an elevator operator (courting in the 1959 film, "Pillow Talk", Thelma Ritter, one of my all - time FAV character actors -- nominated 5X's for An Oscar yet never won --shld have!)
When she had her TV show it was uncanny how Shelley Fabares started to look like her. She adopted a lot of the same quirks and mannerisms, to where I thought they were related. This shows what a strong personality Donna must have been.

well, what a movie. what a movie, what a movie. thoroughly enjoyed it on the eve of the old year. does anybody have any recommendations that are similar to this?
This is another reason I love German Shepherds. Can't fake how limber and intelligent they are. Another great performance by one is in the movie Desierto.
Another interesting and entertaining film. I even sat through the short advertisements to say "Thank you" for consistently sharing quality uploads. LL 🙋🏻♀️🙂🇨🇦
@S Macca It ran for eight seasons, 275 episodes and also featured Shelly Fabares as her daughter. It was when great family shows like Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet ruled the roost. Nick at night used to run them in the 80's and 90's also.
Fabulous 👌 The beautiful germsn shepard, so well trained. The movie would not hav bn so good without Friday. Excellent plot with a blind man. Incidentally, that actor nevr disappoints. Masterful performance and oh that commanding voice. Nice to see gorgeous Donna Reed. Happy funny ending❤
I've seen thousands of movies, and have over 600 in my private collection. This one is unique. A blind man, his dog, and a cast of spies. Edward Arnold, always a favorite of mine, does as usual an extraordinary job. Donna Reed, so easy to love in other films, is hateful here...until the end when she realizes how wrong she has been, and we love her once again...moreover she does this without one word, just a look. and a gesture, no mean feat that. The dog in this makes our beloved Rin Tin Tin and Asta look like dummies. He is not cute (though many will disagree with that statement) but he is beautifully trained, and is absolutely. amazing. I usually dislike the happy Hollywood endings tacked on to a good drama, but this film seems to strike it just right, with a nice touch of humor. Arnold may be blind, and some moments are filmed in the dark, but this is not Film Noir. Among many other missing elements of Film Noir in this movie, Film Noir does not have happy endings. This is a solid spy movie and a dang good one at that.
Very good film. Entertaining & well - cast. Have watched on numerous occasions & loved it every time. Edward Arnold is superb & so is his right hand, his dog, Friday. Thoroughly recommend it. 😀
James Franciscus was the star of "Longstreet." I always thought he was so good-looking. He was a heartthrob of mine back in the day, even though I tended to prefer boys/men with dark hair.
I watched the movie just for the German Shepherd dog! I have 2 of them and they are so fun. I loved the movie and the blind man actor was terrific in it! ❤
Wooh!, Glad I stumbled on this one; this is a fun flick. The characters and dialog are fantastic, and I love all the judo action. I just got to 29:00 - "Is that guy blind?" "Demoralizin', ain't it?" Daaaaaamn!
Donna Reed turns my light on bright, I remember watching her tv show in the 60' in my teens, it wasn't till, later that I recognized how gorgeous she was.
i didn't know this movie existed and didn't even know a 40s blind detective movie and dog was ever made, but it was great fun. Donna Reed playing out of her usual sweet girl next door was a treat. to have a different lead villain was great! the black butler was stereotyped and that took away from it, otherwise, a very enjoyable movie!
